Title: Medical ID tags-what is written on yours?
Melba - August 8, 2009 12:20 AM (GMT)
I'm curious what other people have written on the MED ID tags for VNS. I also take blood thinners so plan to add that too.
How do they get all this info on one tag?

:D HI Melba!
I never had a tag, but did visit with a Pharmacy Tech about one. She was very helpful with wording, etc., so I will direct you to talk to someone at your pharmacy. Please do let us know what you find out because it will be beneficial for other Members.
Good Luck and take care!

This is what I had put on mine:
EPILEPSY
VAGUS NERVE STIMUL
MEDS: PLAVIX
ALLERGIC TO: PCN
There was a limit of 18 characters/spaces. I went to the website www.identifyyourself.com to place my order.
I ordered the silver one, but I'm going to have my doctor write a prescription so I can get my insurance to pay for it and can get the 14K gold one.

:D HI Melba!
Some insurance companies have limits as to what they will pay for medic alert bracelets if they even pay at all. It is my understanding if insurance pays for this and you want an upgrade to gold, you'll have to pay the extra charge plus the already existing copay.
Please do let us know how that works out for you. Any information any Member can give may be of great help others.
Take care!

Important info that needs to be included is your doctor's name and telephone #. If you are unconscious and rushed to the hospital the ER staff can call your doctor and obtain your medical history. All doctors have anserwering services and the service will contact the doctor in emergencies, so the # is good 24/7. My advice is to keep it simple.
Epilepsy
Dr's name + tel #

Did your doctor prescribe Plavix for your complex partial seizures ?

Thanks for your reply, Dennis.
The doc prescribed Plavix after he found evidence of 2 TIA's on my MRI or maybe it was the CT scan.

Received my ID bracelet today. It's really nice. I plan to add some charms to it so I can pretty it up some. It's very delicate and not as obtrusive as I thought it would be, but you can clearly see the red emblem and that it's a medical alert tag.
I like it! :D

I had one prior to having my vns explanted which I wore religiously. I am glad you like yours. I added charms to mine initially but was advised later by an EMT who is a friend that it could be considered jewelry with the charms and not recognized as a medic alert bracelet. Just something to consider.
Have a good weekend and hope your neck gets to feeling better.

Thanks Gel, I thought of that too. Maybe just a few very small HSN diamonds. I do love my fake diamonds.

I worked as a paramedic for 10 years. My advice is to forget about wearing a medical alert necklace and wear a plain jane bracelet instead. When there is a medical emergency the medics aren't going to waste precious time looking at your necklaces to see if you have a medical alert tag. That's not part of the protocal. The advantage of the bracelet is that it is an instant eye catcher for the medics.

I ended up adding some round medical alert charms and a couple of fake HSN diamonds. They can't miss the medical alert charms...I hope.

:D
I too have worked in EMS. In EMT class, we were taught to look for med alert tags. I quickly realized in the field there was no time to read it.
I think it is a good idea to have a med alert bracelet or necklace, ya never know when something may happen and a good samaritan may be there to help you and will read it and tell the crew arriving. As far as decorating it, my opinion from working in EMS is not to overload the bracelet or it may not look like an alert tag.
Too funny...HSN diamonds...
