My great-grandfather’s great-grandfather was Dr. Josiah Bartlet, who was the New Hampshire delegate to the second Continental Congress, the one that sat in session in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776 and announced to the world that we were no longer subjects of King George III, but rather a self-governing people. We hold these truths to be self-evident, they said, that all men are created equal. Strange as it may seem, that was the first time in history that anyone had bothered to write that down. Decisions are made by those who show up.

Keep an eye out for…….
When Leo is talking to Fitzwallace in the Situation Room, the camera pans around, there are windows there, the situation room is in the basement, every time characters go there they go down the steps [also the windows of the situation room show dusk, Charlie and Bartlet are talking and it’s light outside]
CJ says in ‘In the Shadow of a gunman part two’ that Sam wrestled her to the floor, watch it slowly it is clearly not Sam.

Josh: Did you get me the meeting with the Vice President?
Donna: I did, but you’re not going to be happy.
Josh: Jogging.
Donna: Yeah.
Josh: We couldn’t really, this time, just sit in chairs?

She tells CJ that she doesn’t give her enough credit for her spelling, then spells Tel Aviv with two L’s.

Bartlet tries to get the names of his staffer’s right, as he passes two of them in the hall, he says hello and then asks Charlie

BARTLET Listen, have I got any of the names right so far?
CHARLIE No, sir, but you came pretty damn close to a couple of them.

Sorkin says that the inspiration for the last scene was the gun fight in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid.

BARTLET He’s up there with four red-bellied Japanese newts: Do you know what he calls them, C.J.?

I think one of the funniest scenes in the episode is when Zoey and Charlie are arguing in Josh’s office, Josh comes in to get something, goes to sit down and falls down, forgetting his chair isn’t there! Makes me laugh every time.
Fitzwallace talks to the President about the insignia on his carpet, asking

In one talon he’s holding arrows, and in the other an olive branch. Most of the time, the eagle’s facing the olive branch, but when Congress declares war, the eagle faces the talons. How do they do that? You think they’ve got a second carpet sitting around in the basement someplace?
|
On the Seal of the President of the United States, the eagle used to face toward the arrows on its left side, ever since 1877 when President Hayes started using a Presidential Seal. But on October 25, 1945, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order No. 9646, which specified the eagle must face the olive branch.

This is one of the few time’s Sorkin has changed his script at the wish of an actor, in the original script he names the source. He originally said that it was by…Woody Allen. Martin Sheen happens to be a close friend of Mia Farrow, and didn’t want to insult her. So it became “A man once said this, "Decisions are made by those who show up."
