Title: SEGA Virtual Console games
Description: MEGADRIVE LOL

Okay guys, I got me some Virtual Console points and I already bought Actraiser and Contra, which are the only games I actually want. I know some of you were into the Sega Genesis much more than I ever was, so can you recommend me some games?

Complete list of Sega Genesis games available on the Virtual Console (in Europe)

Columns, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage 2.
Space Harrier 2 if you like to shoot things old school.
Gunstar Heroes is sorta like Treasure made Contra.
You can get the Sonic stuff elsewhere.
Where's Shining Force and Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday???!
Uncharted Waters? Romance of Three Kingdoms II?

Comix zone is also pretty cool.

Gunstar Heroes looks awesome, even though I wasn't so impressed with the GBA version. What about Story of Thor?

Story of Thor is pretty good. What you ought to do though, before downloading any of these on the Wii, is try them out via an emulator on your computer. This way, even though we may talk very highly of certain titles, you'll be able to see what you'd actually like and what's worth the money(btw, how much is 800 Nintendo points?).

This is what I would recommend:

Altered Beast

Bio-Hazard Battle
Slick side scrolling shooter

Columns
It NEVER gets old...ever.

Comix Zone

Gain Ground
Addictively fun

Golden Axe
A classic, and a mandatory purchase imo.

Gunstar Hereos
Not ever playing the GBA version, I don't know if they are very much alike, so you not liking one will also not like the other....but this really is good stuff. Try it via emulation and see what you think. Speaking of, I need to try out GBA GH via emulation...

Kid Chameleon
This is pretty good, and hopefully they allow for saved states on the Wii rom of this(it's over 100 levels long). You use these helmets to transform into other things to get through levels.

Ristar
Not quite Sonic, not quite Dynamite Headdy, but somewhere in the middle. Good, original stuff.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Of course.

Streets of Rage/Streets of Rage 2
Two of the best beat'em ups on the system.

Sword of Vermillion
An RPG/Action hybrid. Really amazing music by Yuzo.

ToeJam and Earl
The original, and still one of the best games on the Genesis. Part 2 is good as well, but it's much, MUCH different.

Vectorman
One of my all time favorite sidescrolling action games. Amazing special effects.

Everyone, thanks for the recommendations. I haven't bought any yet, only because I haven't bought a Wii points card yet.

As for points and how much they're worth - 2000 points costs $20. NES games are 500 points, SNES/Genesis games 700, N64 games are 1000.

As usual, the UK gets shafted with pricing - 2000 points is £14 (over $28.)

The game I really want is Contra Hard Cops. Dynamite Headdy, Kid Chamelion and Ristar have got my interest, though.

Contra: HC is probably the BEST Contra out there too, you'll be really happy with it.

The small rant about prices above reminded me that I have another issues with the Virtual Console / Wii:

You can use a Gamecube controller, but the buttons seem to be mapped very awkwardly. Try playing Super Mario World on Wii and you'll see what I mean. Y is run, B is jump, just like on the SNES, but the A, B, X, Y buttons are in different positions on the Gamecube. It was actually easier - though a lot less comfortable - for me to hold down Y (run) with my right index finger.

I've played it before via emulation and I love it. I think I still like Contra 3 a little bit more, however, mainly for nostalgia reasons.

Can't wait for 4!

I like Contra III, don't get me wrong, but just overall I think Contra: HC is the definitive Contra experience. Four different character all with different weapons, multiple paths, incredible special effects, etc. just add up to the best Contra game in my book. :)
