TEEN TITANS 26
Written by Geoff Johns; Art and cover by Tony Daniel and Marlo Alquiza

Summary: Our story begins several weeks after the INSIDERS Teen Titans/Outsider crossover. To recap, Lex Luthor and Brainiac had joined forces to destroy the next generation of Jusice League from the inside. The robot-girl Indigo had been sent back to kill Donna Troy in order to keep her from saving the future, and remained with the Outsiders as a spy to stop her resurrection. Meanwhile Superboy had been given a sublminal command back in his creation by his DNA doner Lex Luthor so that when the time was right, he could be Luthor's agent against Superman.

Needless to say the Titans and Outsiders defeated Luthor and Brainiac, but not with out casualties. Indigo was killed, Robin had his hand broken, Cybrog is destroyed, Nightwing quit the Outsiders and the faith of both teams had been shaken. Superboy who regain control of himself returned to Smallville where he has since then been trying to recover.

But as the Kents go into town, Kon is left to question what he truly is and what he will become. But Kon's musings are interupted when Raven appears on the scene. With only an "I'm Sorry Conner' Raven suddenly pulls Superboy into her soul-self without warning.

Superboy momentariy black out before hearing someone say 'He's perfect'. Slowly he openes his eyes and finds himself inside the very tank he was created in back at Camdus dressed in his old costume. Before him is Lex Luthor, who is surveying his handy-work and mocking Dr. Westfield who thinks he is the donner of Superboy's human DNA. When asked what to know the Superboy project, Luthor calls him 'Lionel' in name of his father. He also give him a phrase which will initiate control of the clone. "Vincere Aut Mori" Conqor or Die."

In a fit of rage, Superboy bursts out of the tank and falls to the ground. Reality changes and Superboy is dressed in his current look and hears a new voice speak "He's a danger to everyone." Looking up Superboy see Superman and Batman in heated discussion.

The Dark Knight, although understanding that it was not Superboy's fault is wary of Conner's aligence to the heroes and the Titans. Superman is unwilling to give up on his clone/cousin/surrogant little brother.

"I'M NOT A BAD GUY!" Superboy shouts, only to get grabbed from behind by the Superman he saw himself become in the future, who tells him he's doomed to be like Luthor. Superboy shatters the image of his possible future and bares witness to him trying to kill Cassie. Conner strikes out at the memory, but he is instead struck hard and sent into Titans Tower, where he finds Robin and the other Titans battered a beaten.

Filled with rage, Superboy strikes his fist into the chest of his evil-counterpart which slowly fades away. Supeirboy is left alone in darkness until a blinding light shines down upon him. He looked up and sees a glowing silver orb hovering before him.

"What... What is it?" he asked.

"It's your soul," Raven declares as she melts from the shadow. "Young. New. But Growing."

Raven tells Conner that despite his earlier fears he did indeed have a soul, but it was so new she ould not see it behind Luthor's influence. But now that he was free, the soul had a chance to grow. She tells Superboy that she above all else understands what it is like to suffer the sins of the father and how she wishes he did not need to suffer what she had so many times.

The pair return to Smallville in which Raven give Conner and update on the Titans and asks about his return. Despite the new hope she has instilled in him, he feels he is not ready to return.

"When you are ready... call us," she say to him. "And Bart wanted me to tell you... You'll always be a Titan." And with that she leaves, leaving Conner and Krypto to wonder about the future.

Elsewhere, two familar faces plot their return to earth and their destruction of all. Brother Blood and the Titans Omen.

READER RESPONSE: Now I for one was very pleased with this story. They first off did NOT try and re-write Superboy's origin like so many people claimed they would. Instead they looked at the psychological aspects of Superboy with only passing refrence to his past, which remains untouched. Even the Luthor cameo at Camdus was added in to where it did not affect what was shown before. Since the exact details of Superboy's creation were relatively hidden, that scene could have taken place in the original events.

Although they did forget that at the time of Superboy's creation Lex was not bald, but rather had long red-hair and was posing as his own son.

We also get a Lionel Luthor refrence for you SMALLVILLE tv show fans.

The involvement of Raven as Superboy's 'guide' was well played since Raven herself knows what it is like to have one's evil father dictate their future. This gives Raven a closer connection with the new Titans. Since her resuurection, they haven't delved too much into her mind-set since they assume readers are familar with her already. But here new readers see just what kind of a good person she is.

And finally the Brother Blood and Omen cameos were a nice touch. Like Troia, Omen is a mystical type-character so its no suprise to see will make a comeback, although as what... well we'll see together.

My only complaint as always is the story felt a bit rushed. But at least it felt like you got something out of it.

Overall 4 out of 5 T-Coms
