This past week...1. Its here!! Hello 2007!!
Hopefully everyone had an awesome Christmas and lots of fun welcoming the new year in. Trivia for you!! Chinese New Year is not until February 18th, this year will be the year of the Pig, so this will be your year if you were born in 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971, 1959 And so forth. There are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac so Mark, being born in 1983 will be 24 this year!! Yes, I agree. So old.
To find out your Chinese Zodiac
Year!! I am an Ox. Don’t mess wit’ me yo….
2. Hasta la Vista, Welcome!!
On the 30th of January there is a new computer operating system being launched by Microsoft called Windows Vista!! Features of this new version include the far increased security in the system; one of the main faults with XP is the susceptibility to viruses and hackers. However this will also tackle piracy and in some ways stop illegal downloads or file sharing of both music and movies. Windows Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Media Player 11 are self explanitory, they are just new versions of older programs. Also included is the much later attachment for XP, called Media Centre, which is like a hive for content such as music, photos and video. Fast search is also now in the system, hopefully it’ll actually find files in my computer then because basic XP search sucks. Apparently it is derived from the Apple Mac’s OS X Spotlight, based loosely around perhaps? Lastly to be mentioned is the possibly useful sidebar, seems to be like a favourites menu concerning actual information, like the weather or sports scores. Its got potential. I think I’ll wait until I’ve actually looked into the system before I decide to stick with XP or be happy to upgrade when my system dies. For more information visit
Wikipedia 3. Wii Wii Wii, can Sony do a 360 to get back on top??
A few years ago a totally revolutionary games system was released, awesome graphics, original games and the (stolen) rumble controller. Of Course I’m talking about the Playstation 2. Microsoft saw how lucrative gaming could be from this and although they release the X-Box, along with Nintendo’s game cube they could not over come the popularity of the PS2.
Lets flip back to two years ago (2004). Both Sony and Microsoft announce new consoles in the making, a race against time we should say to see who’s will launch first and become the more predominant system.
So now one year ago (3rd of Dec 2005) I marked the launch of the X-box 360. I must admit I was impressed, with its awesome graphics, High-Definition might I add, the coolness of X-Box live which no one else has been able to match. Plus it was launched at the right time in two different versions, The Premium and the upgradeable Core. Sure it was costly but acceptable for what you were getting, especially with all the extras that came with the premium or the fact you could, when you had the money, buy the hard drive to upgrade the core.
About 10 months ago Nintendo decided to have another go at the big leagues due to it growing handheld success and announced the dubious title of the Nintendo Wii. However I think its media hyping over the name only brought it good things, easy to remember and interesting to say the least. The cheapest of all available consoles and the most involving with its various style controllers made it an instant success. With its Wii-mote, nun chuck, regular pad and actual gun (Yes duck hunt fans, the light gun is back in fashion!) Plus there is a steering wheel facia to put the wii-mote into for racing games. Its appeal is that it pretty much…appeals to everyone. Plus it has some very original games. (Wii sports is totally fun)
Now knowing Sony’s rivals lets look into the George Forman Grill looking console, what 1080p is all about and what happened to the boomerang.
Sony had “global PS3 launch” plans Japans launched November 11th and America on the 17th. According to the PS2 statistics Europe owns over 15 million more units than Asia and only 4 million units less than the states. Why oh why has the European launch been pushed back to MARCH!?! Yes, the PS3 has still not launched anywhere in Europe. However it could be due to Sonys “lack of stock” tactic used so many times before. Sales from December 2nd world wide for Playstation 3 : 384,836 whereas the Wii had moved 1 Million by that date.
At E3 Sony estimated the sale of 4 million units to be sold by the end of 2006, they announced in early January the one millionth sale. Slightly below estimations I think.
"BluRay is a next generation format supported by major studios. Five of the six major Hollywood studios are supporting BluRay." (quote from E3) Unfortunately the type of film most sold world wide is the blue kind, and years ago Sony lost out when the adult movie companies chose VHS over Betamax. Unfortunately for BluRay, porn seems to have chosen HD DVD, its cheaper to manufacture and there are players on the market. True Sony purchased the rights to a lot of movie collections like the entire set of James Bond but you need to have something to play them on.
“We will make PS3 available via a two-configuration plan. One with a 60GB HD. And the other with a 20GB hard drive” Which means you have to either get the higher or lower system, there is a chance of upgrading when you have the money but to meet the spec of the higher console you need the extra hard drive space (which you cannot buy), a Wi-Fi adapter, and a card expansion bay. Extra cost and we all know how much its going to cost already. In America, 60 GB = $599 and the 20GB = $499 In The United Kingdom the 60GB = £550 ($935 based on £1=$1.7) and the 20 GB might not even be sold here. Costly?? In Sonys own words “It requires huge financial investments”
One of the main selling points of the PS2 was its backwards compatibility with PS games, it seems that to play Playstation Two games you will either need excess patches and upgrades per game or you just cant play them. (That’s why you need the 60GB hard drive, all the upgrades your going to need.)
1080p is the shorthand name for a category of video modes. The number 1080 represents 1,080 lines of vertical resolution, while the letter
p stands for progressive scan. At the moment there are few TVs to watch this on because they tend to be 720p. A boast of the PS3 was its consoles ability to run on 1080p due to the BluRay disks …which are also few and far between. At the end of 2006 Microsoft posted a download on Live! To enable the choice of 720p or 1080p, losing Sony that’s edge.
The very first looks of the Playstation 3 made it look like a George Forman Grill, big and bulky with a boomerang like controler next to it, also looking big and bulky. After Nintendos announcement of their revolutionary Wii-mote suddenly the old controller was back, no longer to be called the rumble remote due to its 6-degrees of freedom…hmmm.
The seventh generation console wars are most interesting especially as all the people who come to my shop that didn’t buy the X-box 360 waiting that extra year have now got either a 360 or a Wii, deciding that making them wait at least another 4 months is just way out.
If your wondering who’s side i’m on? I own a Playstation 2 & a pink DS Lite plus I play the 360 at work and my friends Wii every now and then. And I like them all. Once I play the PS3, I'll tell you if I like it.
[I was going to do hand held consoles too but I’m tired now]
