Okay, so after finally getting a list on time, I'm back to fitting two weeks into one. But in my defense, there were a lot of comics to read, it took me awhile to get through them all. In fact, while the last list was rather short this one is rather long. And a bit Titans heavy, hope anyone who actually reads these doesn't mind. :P And if you do...tough.
Robin #174Oy...*grabs my throbbing head* For the most part I've been liking this title and I'd love to tell you something about the actual plot, but I'll be honest. Everything that happens in this issue is overshadowed by the 'new' Spoiler. Speaking of which there are...ironically...spoilers in this review so if you plan to read it, move along to the next review. But as I was saying...when I first saw that there was a new Spoiler, I was hoping that it was some stalker person. I was hoping that it was anybody but Stephanie back from the dead. Well technically...I did get my wish...it wasn't Stephanie back from the dead, it was Stephanie who apparently never died.
*head throbs again* Why? Explain to me why? Superboy stays dead...Bart stays dead...New Gods...dead...why the Hell is Stephanie back? After literally bringing back Jason Todd from the dead you'd think DC would have fulfilled it's 'bringing back people the fans don't actually like' quota. Yeah, Jason's kinda growing on me after Countdown but still, fans voted for him to be dead, he should have stayed dead. I'll stop the rant now because I could probably go on for ages, but needless to say, Stephanie returning kinda ruined the issue for me...(and funny fact: I'm not actually a Stephanie hater. I loved her guest appearances in Batgirl when she was kinda Cass's sidekick. It's just the principle that at the very least the Bat-books shouldn't have a revolving door around death)
Cyborg #1Okay, I think I'm done with the ranting... You know...when I saw this title, my initial reaction was, "Okay, Raven having a miniseries I can see...but Cyborg? Honestly?" Sorry to any Cyborg fans, for what it's worth, I do think he should step out of the Titans niche and be on the Justice League already so it's not like I don't like the character, just don't think he's very interesting on his own usually. But I figured if I had low enough expectations, I'd actually like the comic unless it was total crap.
Turned out I did rather enjoy it. Don't know if it was because of the low expectations, but as an origin story it kept me rather intrigued. Which is quite the accomplishment considering I pretty much knew the story before I read it. Victor has a good life, ends up getting the bejeebus blown out of him, father makes him a cyborg, he hates it and has a major pity party, ends up finding the Titans and has a new purpose in life, yadda yadda. Was still interesting to read though. And interesting note, they had a reference to the blonde girl from the Titans cartoon(you know the one that taught the kids with artificial limbs...assuming you watched the cartoon) then again maybe the cartoon referenced the comic...eh, whatever, it still caught my attention.
Tiny Titans #4Told ya this was going to be Titans heavy. As usual, this title isn't really marketed for my demographic but eh, I read it anyway. It tends to be fun and have a good couple of gags. And from the title I was curious exactly why Robin was becoming Nightwing. Not like Batman was going to fire him or anything. And his reasoning behind the new costume was just great, so I wasn't disappointed. And Starfire and Cyborg's expressions when he said he was Nightwing and they were eating a bucket of chicken called "Knights Wings" actually had me laughing out loud a good bit. Anyway, it's worth a browse.
Titans #2Okay, um, I think this is the last Titans themed one. But anyway, I still stand by what I said about #1. Some of the costume changes are stupid, and Trigon being alive again is lame. But I have to say one thing...why the Hell wasn't the character interaction this funny in TEEN Titans when they had the same frickin characters!? There's a page where Argent's trying to find out whose trying to kill all the Titans and she has to keep asking because they keep going off topic and each time they get off topic it gets funnier. Oh and for those who want to know, there's a point where Raven's pretty much wearing a purple version of the "Fifth Element" Lelu bandages-only costume for no real discernible reason.
Oh and speaking of the art, I really liked that as well. It's kind of cartoony but not at the same time. Once again, why was this not in the TEEN Titans? But anyway, it's a pretty entertaining issue. Oh, and you remember the issue of Robin where David Cain's dying words were that there were other children he trained like Cassandra and I said that was really lame because it took away her originality. But...if it was handled correctly then it might be cool. Well kinda the same deal with the revelation at the end of this issue. Guess we'll see soon whether it's handled well or goes into the Lame box, without passing Go and without collecting $200.
Birds of Prey #118As some of you probably know, I'm perfectly content with superheroes beating the Hell out of each other for no good reason. What can I say? I'm a glutton for senseless violence and I can guarantee you this won't be the only comic on the list because of that. The basic premise behind this is that there's a Metahuman Fight Club led by people who are named after Apokalyptians (Leader's Dark Side, etc.) and keeps anyone they catch drugged up so that they'll fight. You add Black Alice and Misfit is this thing and that equals me being a happy reader. You also find a nice little secret about the two of them that has me very interested in where they'll be going with this.
Oh, you also find out what happens when Misfit teleports with something organic. Frickin awesome if you like gore.
Batman #676Okay, so this is the first issue of the Batman RIP arch. For those who don't know after this arch is over Batman will never be the same yadda yadda yadda. Though supposedly the RIP doesn't necessarily mean 'Rest In Peace', you won't find out what it means until the arch's over. And this issue is basically an introduction to the arch. And while it was written beautifully, some parts of it just left me going 'WTF?'. Don't know if that was the intent but it's kinda like, whose the girl that Bruce is kissing? Are we supposed to know who she is because if we are, they did a horrible job at letting us know that. And the part with Joker at the end, I'm not completely sure what happened...but eh, it was cool and I'll probably be checking out the rest of the arch to see exactly what's up with it. Oh, and there's a new Batmobile...still say the Batman Forever Batmobile is the most awesome one.
Justice League of America #21And we now have the first 'Sightings' comic of the year. Once again for those who don't know, 'Sightings' means that there's going to be a significant event having something to do with Final Crisis in the issue. If I had to guess I'd say in this issue it's Libra making a big gathering of supervillains. Yeah, yeah, I know, that's been done so much that it's kind of losing it's impact. But I'm trying to have faith that since they've blatantly pointed out that they've done this before and Libra's insisting it'll be different this time that we'll see something new.
But all of that aside. You know what the shining point of this issue is? Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman have a secret meeting room and for a good bit of the issue they talk with each other but they kind of pick on each other as well which is pretty frickin hilarious. Example:
Batman: So Clark. When we were fighting the Injustice League a couple of weeks back, did I see you making out with Vixen?
Superman: I didn't....we weren't....
Batman: I can't say I blame you for straying. Mari is a very beautiful woman.
Superman: We weren't "making out." It was just a kiss.
Wonder Woman: Wait. I thought Bruce was teasing. Did you really...?
Superman: No. I mean, yes. I mean...I can't talk about it.
Batman: Uh huh.
That's just gold, right there.
Superman/Batman #48This is another one that's on here mainly because of the violence as it's mostly a fight between Superman and
All American Boy through Smallville. But I'd say easily the quote of the comic is:
Batman: That...That thing is part Doomsday?
Look at that thing! How could you not know it's part Doomsday purely by looking at it? World's Greatest Detective indeed. Anyway, Superman fighting a Kryptonite Doomsday? Genius, and total overkill, really, I think they should have named him Overkill, way better than All American Boy. That's about it for this issue. Awesome fight.
DC/Wildstorm: Dreamwar #2This is yet another one that's on the list purely because of the fights. Mainly the original Teen Titans vs. Gen 13, and the JLA vs. The Authority. There's plot in her and all, but yeah, I didn't care. Those two fights alone totally sold me on the issue. As well as the fact that the Gen 13er that ended up naked during the fight wasn't Fairchild. Very nice. Though I am curious why they didn't go with any current DC teams. It's old school Teen Titans and old school Justice League. I just kinda question that decision. Personally I'd have loved to see Miss Martian fighting Grunge and the like. But eh(I'm going 'eh' a lot this week, aren't I?), it's still really cool to read.
And that's finally it for DC! Onto Marvel!
Wolverine #65A Wolverine comic? Moi? It can't be another one based on fights, right? Well, dammit that's exactly why it was chosen. As you can see from the cover there's a good ole brawl between Wolverine and Mystique. And you know what? It's totally frickin awesome! You gotta love that Mystique doesn't go for mind games during this fight, it's just straight up hardcore violence. And I do rather like some of the ways Mystique gets the better of Logan. And I might be the only one who finds Mystique throwing up on Wolverine's face funny...but I don't care. I have a twisted sense of humor and that tickled it. And the final end of the confrontation. One word. Niiiiiiice.
Sky-Doll #1This is still technically Marvel, or should I say the first title to come out of the partnership between Marvel and Soleil. Was drawn to this because of the summary of the story. A robot made purely to be a servant and once a particular one escapes she starts to find out that like a Transformer there's more to her than meets the eye. To me this kind of read like one of those animes where you're not completely sure what's going on but you understand enough that you're willing to stick with it until everything makes sense. As you read it more things start to make a little more sense and it's definitely interesting enough that I'll be keeping my eye out for it. Oh and if this is a selling point for anyone, there is random nudity. Nothing Tarot-level but it's there. Oh and I absolutely love the art.
Bomb Queen V #1This is apparently the start of the 5th volume of Bomb Queen. Never heard of it before, myself but if this issue's any consolation I'll definitely be checking up on the other ones. The basic story is that Bomb Queen is a supervillainess and she runs her own city of nothing but supervillains. Already I was sold on that, but having the anti-Town(IE the New Genesis to the Apokalips) be called Littleville, was once again, pure gold. This is definitely the comic for anyone with a twisted sense of humor since it does get a bit on the gory side. If that's your thing I'd definitely check it out. Oh yeah, random nudity and stuff.
