Yes as much as it tries to creep up, Marvel has yet to be in the lead since the contest started. MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA! Once more I know nothing about Mordu except what I saw in the last JLU(wasn't nearly as cool as the Doomsday one, Doomsday rocks! Even if they butchered his origin a bit...but I digress...) And I only know Dr. Fate from his guest appearance on the Spider Man cartoon, and of course partially from Dr. Strangefate in amalgam, so I will listen to arguments and then make my vote. :D

I don't know much about Mordu, but wasn't Fate a bit of a wuss? I mean I only read a comic here and there with him, but his magic always seemed kinda lame and to beat all the big baddies he got matched up against he always had a hero... ussually spiderman... to help. Once again, no idea about Mordu but at least he was going solo in this weekend's JLU. Wad'y'all think?

Mordru was in the JLU cartoon? When? What happened? How did they depict his origin?
But, I digress.
As many of you may have allready guessed, I am voting for Mordru. He was one of the most power sorcerers of the 21st century (surpassed by Dr. Fate and matbe Princess Amethyst), and grows in power over the centuries to be the most powerful sorcerer in the 30th/31st century.
He was originally Wrynn, a young noble in Gemworld (son of Topaz, if I recall correctly) before Child, an Agent of Chaos, recruited him to serve the Lords of Chaos and gave him vast mystic power. Mordru was defeated and imprisoned by Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld at a time when he was still getting used to his full power. He later escaped.
In his natural state, Mordru is pure energy, and inhabits a body to facilitate contact with mortals (he currently inhabits the body of a Lord of Order named Arion who he usurped). His only real weakness is his vast arrogance and his pathological fear of being burried alive (that was what Amethyst did to him). He is, for all practical purposes, immortal, and Dr. Fate has seen into his future and determined that mordru will live untill the end of the universe (Entropy), even though he will spend most of that time imprisoned due to the actions of the JSA and the Legion of Super-Heroes.
In the "Princes of Darkness" storyline, Mordru (with some minor assistance from Obsidian and Eclipso) almost destroyed the world. He ripped the moon from its orbit, creating a semi-premanent eclipse. He dismantled the Justice Society and their allies (including the Freedom Fighters, Airwave and Jade). It was only the interferance of Dr. Fate that allowed the day to be saved.
He is even more powerful by the 30th/31st century. He held in his thrall for considerable time the Emerald Eye, a near omnipotent mystical orb that controls the mind of anyone it wishes to use for however long it likes, no matter how strong their mind or will- Mordru was the only being ever to dominate it. Before the creation of the Legion, he ruled a vast section of the galaxy outside what would become UP Space, before being tricked and defeated by a vast alliance of lesser sorcerers led by his daughter, Mysa. Despite imprisoning Mordru, all of those magic users that opposed him were killed in the battle except Mysa, who was almost killed (instead, Mordru magically aged her to an old crone and took much of her power).
When he was released, there was no one who could face him directly. he dismantled a Legion task force that included three of the most powerful Legionnaires (M'Onel, Element Lad and Star Boy). He was only defeated when Invisible Kid created a brilliant strategy taking advantage of Mordru's pathological fear of entombment, Sensor's illusion casting abilities and his tremendous arrogance, essentially making him think he had allready won long enough to be trapped.
Short of completely overpowering him mystically (as Dr. Fate did) or taking advantage of his inexperience at a time when he had just come to his powers (as Princess Amethyst did), it is only possible to defeat him with a clever strategy and much deception (as Invisible Kid did).
The question now is whether or not Dr. Strange has the raw power to overcome Mordru directly. As I stated, only two sorcerers have ever done this- Princess Amethyst and Dr. Fate.
Amethyst we can really kind of discount, since she accomplished this about a day after Mordru gained his powers; doesn't seem fair, does it? For the record, though, Amethyst was the most powerful magic user (after Mordru himself, of course) in all of Gemworld.
Dr. Fate is a different story. The incarnation of Fate that defeated Mordru (Hector Hall, I think his name was) is also the "Fate Child," being born of Chaos and Order, and thus able to draw on the magicks of BOTH (which no other being in the universe can do, as I understand it). He also posesses the helm of fate, which allows him to draw on "the magicks of a hundred realms... a thousand worlds." between these two facts, we can conclude that Hector Hall is the most powerful of all the Dr. Fates there have ever been. It is thereful reasonable to assume that the previous incarnations of Dr. Fate would NOT have been able to overpower Mordru directly. Thusly, I draw the conclusion that the Hector Hall Dr. Fate is the only mortal sorcerer capable of overpowering the 21st Century Mordru directly (he was never tried against the moe powerful and experienced 30th/31st century Mordru, which I think would be another story).
Now, for the record, let's take a look at individuals who have tried and failed to confront Mordru directly. This is, of course, a partial list and only includes some of the most powerful entities.
1. Sentinal/Green Lantern/Alan Scott (not only was he beaten, but Mordru wripped the Starheart right out of his body)
2. Dr. Occult
3. Child (the Agent of Chaos from gemworld who recruited Mordru in the first place)
4. White Witch (a pre-Crisis Legionnaire)
5. Lady Mysa (Mordru's daughter, and the post-crisis incarnation of the White Witch)
6. The Emerald Eye
7. The Emerald Empress (the human host linked to the Emerald Eye)
8. Glorith
9. The Infinite Man
10. Power Girl
11. Thunderbolt (the JSA's genie from the 5th dimension)
12. Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld (yes, she beat him when he was first created, but got her ass kicked in the 30th century just before Zero Hour)
13. Hawkman
14. Element Lad
15. M'Onel
16. Star Boy
17. And, as I mentioned, the entire current JSA + assorted other allies before Dr. Fate stepped in.
He is capable of casting potent spells and manipulating vast mystic powers directly, and makes use of numerous powerful talismans as the need and opportunity arrises.
Personally, I think he could take down Dr. Strange with very little difficulty.

Mordru's origin wasn't really covered too much in JLU. To be honest his attack was more of a back story since it was mostly focused on Booster Gold realizing how crappy he is. :P Though one funny part was that there were a bunch of heroes fighting Mordru and when you see Superman getting knocked down right in front of Booster, one side of him was Superman, the other side was Batman and he had Wonder Woman's voice, it was hilarious.
Robin - February 28, 2005 10:03 PM (GMT)
Mordur.... The guy got his ass handed to him by Elongated Man in JLU. Mordu could take out everyone of the JLU EXCEPT Elongated Man. If the guy can barely handle Ralph... well... I think that means he's HIGHLY over rated.
Doctor Strange's powers are far more powerful than he was back in the day. He's faced every demonic super-power in hell and won. The guy was able to defeat the Scarlette Witch who could spank Mordur with her probability altering and magical powers.
Doctor Strange his also far more intellegent. He's a mystic strategist. He's defeated Death, Nightmare, Belasco, Satan, the Crimson Dragons, the Silver Surfer, and probably a couple other thousand big bads. He will use spells that no one would expect to win the day.
If you think Doctor Strange will succomb to someone like Mordur, you are in for a nasty suprise.

Scarlet Witch? Please, Scarlet Witch is a joke.
And it doesn't matter how he was handled in the cartoon, since the cartoons are nowhere near canon.
The Silver Sirfer? Big deal. Wildfire, M'Onel, Thunder, Star Boy, Sentinal, I'd take any one of them over the Silver Surfer any day of the week, and Mordru can easily take them one on one.
I think that you are VASTLY over-estimating Dr. Strange's abilities.
Robin - March 1, 2005 01:42 AM (GMT)
Scarlette Witch? A joke? You've got to be kidding. Her powers of probability make her one of the most powerful beings in Marvel. She can alter anything and everything including Mordur's lifeforce with her mutant power. Add to that Magic which combined could bring about the destruction of everything... Far from a joke.
And I say you vastly under-estimate Doctor Strange and over estimate the Legion and Murdur.

I was flicking back and forth on JLU the other night. How the hell did Elongated Man beat Mordu. I mean you kept seeing flashes of Mordu kicking the Justice League head honchos across town and then suddenly everyone's like 'good job Ralph'. And on a sidenote... great episode... Booster Gold is a tool.
Robin - March 1, 2005 04:41 AM (GMT)
My best guess is Elongated Man's shape-shifting abilities aren't effected by Mordur's magic. Wonder Woman for example was tranformed into a Superman/Batman hybrid by Mordur. Since Elongated Man is a shape-shifter, he could transform back to normal form easily. And he could change his side so that he could stand toe to toe with the giant Mordur. And even Mordur can be knocked out or even suffocated into unconsiouness. Ralph wraps himself around Mordur's head and blocks out air. Mordur can't breath, thus he can't concentrate on a spell and bing-bang boom, he's down for the count. There are dozens of possibilities.

LOL! I was wondering who the second person who voted for Mordu was. Don't feel bad though, there'll be plenty of time to vote purely on animation...not that I'm condoning it. :P
Marx - March 14, 2005 11:59 PM (GMT)
And there you have it! Using his creepy ghost thing Dr. Strange is able to creep out Mordu so much he runs for his mommy. :D Next one'll be up soon, yadda yadda.
