History: Alfred Pennyworth is a man of British descent whose grandfather and father were both butlers serving the wealthy Wayne family of Gotham City. Alfred's father trained him to become a butler, intending that he, too, would serve the Waynes. But Alfred's mother left her husband for a career on the stage. Alfred followed her into the acting profession over his father's objections. Alfred loved performing, especially in action roles, but his life took a side turn when he was recruited to join her Majesty's Secret Service for a number of years, until opting for early retirment when his father became deathly ill.
Alfred's father still intended that his son succeed him as the Waynes' butler. Upon the death of his father, Alfred went to work for Dr. Thomas Wayne and his wife Marma out of a sense of familial duty. He nevertheless planned to return to his acting career but before he could arrange to do so, his employers were murdered. Alfred remained at Wayne Manor, helping the physician Leslie Thompkins care for the Waynes' orphaned son Bruce.
Alfred took care of Wayne Manor for many years, including the period when Bruce Wayne traveled abroad. When Wayne returned, Alfred told him he now intended to resume his acting career; shortly afterward, however, Wayne decided to become me costumed crimefighter known as the Batman. He allowed Alfred and Leslie knowledge of his double identity, and from then on Alfred has been a loyal confidant.
Batman's war on crime is often brutal, and Alfred acts as a medical nurse, therapist and voice of reason. In his war against crime, Batman has adapted a series of allies over the years, many of them children. Amongst them were Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Jason Todd, Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown.
Alfred helped raise many of the children. If Bruce was the paternal figure, Alfred was undoubtedly the maternal figure. Alfred was influential in mending fences between Bruce and his 'chirldren' over the years.
When the Venom-fueled Bane destroyed Arkham Asylum and unleashed its inhabitants on an unwary Gotham, Bruce Wayne learned that his obsession might be more than he can endure. Driving himself past the point of exhaustion to capture Arkham's most dangerous inmates, Batman led himself right into the clutches of Bane, who had deduced his identity and invaded the sanctity of Wayne Manor and the Batcave. Bane invaded the batcave and savagely attacked Alfred.
There, surrounded by all the trophies and weapons of his crusade, Bruce Wayne was defeated, his back broken and spirit destroyed. Crippled and wheelchair-bound, the humbled Wayne left Jean Paul Valley (Azrael) the mantle of the bat. Azrael's behavior became erratic and violent.
When Shondra Kinsolving, Bruce’s doctor, and Jack Drake, Robin’s father, were kidnapped together, Bruce set out after them, even though he was in a weakened state and in a wheelchair. As Bruce quested more and more, his condition worsened, and all Alfred could do was watch. When it got too much for him, Alfred said he would sooner quit than watch Bruce kill himself. When Bruce refused to stop, Alfred left.
Alfred returned to London and tried to set up a life for himself again. He met an old flame of his, Joanna Clark, and, with the aid of Dick Grayson in his Nightwing identity, helped save her son from terrorists. Hearing that Bruce needed him again from Nightwing, Alfred placed an ad in the Gotham newspaper saying Wayne Manor was looking for a butler and answered his own ad, allowing both him and Bruce to save face.
Alfred returned to his old duties, and served with distinction. When Gotham was declared a No Man’s Land, Alfred worked as Bruce’s advance agent, learning what he needed to so Batman could make his entrance into the city. When the city was reinstated, Alfred didn’t return with Bruce, but instead went to spend time with Tim Drake at Brentwood Academy, the private school he had been sent to. Alfred would return to Wayne Manor, but when Bruce and he had another falling out, this time over Bruce’s single minded pursuit of the shooter of James Gordon, Alfred went to spend all him time at Brentwood.
Alfred returned to Wayne Manor after Bruce Wayne was accused of murder. With Bruce gone, Alfred tended the Manor, waiting for Bruce to return. When Batman cleared his name, he returned to Wayne Manor, where he made a peace with all his friends and allies. Shortly afterwards, Alfred began to grow ill. It turned out that the bats that inhabited the cave had becomes carriers of a variant of the Clench virus that had devastated Gotham, and Alfred, who had spent so much time in the cave, was infected. Bruce raced to find a cure, and while he did, Alfred called each of his foster sons to him, and told him how he felt. But Bruce did find the cure, with the aid of Leslie Thompkins, and Alfred recovered. He is currently serving as butler in Wayne Manor, doing his best to keep the house up and give Bruce the perspective he needs.
