Title: New game that looks kinda cool...

ProtoFury - November 19, 2004 02:34 AM (GMT)
Hey, have any of you guys seen that new board game called Hero Scape? I've seen some commercials and I checked out the website and it looks pretty cool, if not, I could get it and incorperate it with Zoids somehow. What do you guys think?

Never heard of it.. Maybe it's just in America at the moment. I was never really into board games though, Candy Land was always too boring, and Monopoly was too hard for me at 10 years old, which is probably the last time I've ever played a board game.
What's it about? Got a link?

D-i-t-t-o. Blame electronic entertainment. ;)

Nah, I was never really into computer or video gaming anyway, still aren't. Neither show much appeal to me, electronic or board, they seem kinda pointless to me sometimes. Apart from curing half an hour of boredom, but even anything from a spinning top to a TV can do that. *shrug*

*TWITCH TWITCH TWITCH*

Let me tell you about heroscape.

One year ago, I posted a signup sheet for people on another board that I visited for a game called Yggdrasil's Branches. It featured a mytho-technic view of the old Valhalla myth. People from all universes and worlds (separate universes are called "branches") unite to fight the Wretched from taking over the universe, AKA Yggdrasil. Old heroes from throughout history show up- my 2nd group of players teamed up with Davey Crockett, another group is teaming with King Leonidas.

Starting to sound familiar?

There were several descriptions of things in my post that were mirrored in those commercials... er... anyway, in the interest of a possible lawsuit, I consulted a local wargaming expert.

Turns out it's been a year in production, done by the guy who did a very similar pen-and-paper game called "Torq", I believe. The concept that I had (and thought was my own) isn't too new. Copyright is 2004.

Just to prove I'm not blowing steam, here's part of my original post:

QUOTE
Brief Description:

You are a warrior, but more specifically, a dead one.  Or, you should be.  On your last battlefield, in your own universe, you slumped to the ground dying... and a multi-colored light surrounds you, suddenly picking you up through space and time and dropping you off in a world you've never seen before.

Welcome to Asgard.  You have joined the ranks of the Einherjar, the great warriors of ages past and universes undiscovered who have died in battle.  You've been brought out of your home time and universe to make war against Loki, Surtur, and the Wretched under the banner of Odin and the Aesir, the Gods of Asgard.

As their champions, you will side with other Einherjar in your holy quest to delay the Ragnarokalypse- the end of all time and all space as we know it- by fighting the Wretched across time and space on millions of battlefields.

You have thousands of brethren; you have magic, technology, and your own powers to aid you.  Where you may have magic, your partner may have cybernetics; while your ally has futuristic equipment, your own body is your weapon.

And above the Aesir's machinations, the Alfadur watches you intently...

You can probably see the parallels. Especially the method of transport of the dying Einherjar.

You will find precious little about the storyboard on that site. I assume you have to buy it to learn the exact storyboard. But, I assume it's pretty dang close to what I've got up there.

Right now I have no case for the lawsuit, but if they suddenly start ripping off one of my player's characters or one of my unique NPCs I have plenty of proof.

Besides that, the idea of the fully customizable terrain is nice, but this game seems to be "wargaming lite" for a younger audience. Not bad, I guess, but my own prejudices due to my suspicions (my game predating theirs) are gonna keep me from playing it.

Hey, I wanted to post the link... Oh, well. The battle game part of it really is interesting, though you can master it the first time you play it. I like the idea of building your own field, though, since it could be used for more than just the Hero Scape game, such as a Zoids game or something. Just an idea, though.
