Yeah, thats right.. it's not purple, pink or white and it doesn't glow any fruity colours.

E3 2005: Official Revolution Details
A press sheet spills even more details.
by David Adams

May 17, 2005 - Simultaneously with its press conference Tuesday, Nintendo issued an official press announcement offering first details on the company's next-generation console, codenamed Revolution.

The console, expected for 2006, will indeed be just a little larger than three DVD cases stacked together. Nintendo is showing a number of colors at the conference this week, though all shades of Revolution will sit on a silver stand (the console can also be placed flat).

Nintendo will use the Revolution to power its new generation of games, using power the company describes as "two to three times greater" than that of the GameCube. While the company has yet to release any processor details, we do know that the system will house 512 MB of flash memory; a dual-format front-loading disc drive which handles both DVDs and GCN-format discs; wireless controllers; two USB 2.0 ports; and built-in Wi Fi support.

Perhaps most surprising, the Revolution will give players access to Nintendo's back catalog of games. That's right: you'll be able to download classic titles for the Nintendo 64, Super NES, and original NES systems -- in addition to playing your library of GameCube titles.

Nintendo will use the Revolution's wireless capabilities to offer online gaming right from the start. The company will offer an online gaming lobby, the Nintendo Wi Fi Connection, a "comfortable, inviting environment" for online gaming.

As with GameCube, Nintendo is hoping to please both big-name developers and smaller, independent studios with an architecture which is easy to develop for.

"We will show the world what a next-gen system can be. Revolution marries the strongest heritage of innovation to the future of gaming," said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. "With backward compatibility and the 'virtual console' concept, the stylish, compact body provides maximum gaming power. It will not only take home entertainment into another dimension by expanding the definition of video games, but it also will give you access to the great history of gaming."

"Our next console proves small in size but big on ideas," says Reggie Fils-Aime. "We're throwing open the doors of gaming to wider audiences, from casual players to hard-core gamers who live for the thrill of defeating an endless army of wireless opponents."

Of course, more details are coming in even now as we write. Keep checking back for the latest Revolution news direct from Los Angeles.

I think I'm in love......

lol

Looks like Nintendo finally woke up about the online gaming bit. I can't wait....the very idea of play Super Smash Brothers online...its more than I can take. And playing the first Legend of Zelda....then the new.

I'll have to wait until I see a price tag and some release games....but it looks like I'll be saving all of my money to buy this when it comes out.

Likewise. I'm very, very excited to hear about this... I can't wait to get my paws on one! @___@

Access to games from older systems? I've died and gone to heaven...I can't wait!!

In addition, Nintendo have confirmed the rumour that they will have a 3rd Party Developer service providing you with the SDK and information you need to create games for any of thier old systems that will be sold via this Online Game Service.

GameSpy are the current partners for this venture meaning that no doubt it will have the same awesome and ease of use that Fileplanet, Direct2Drive and GameSpy Arcade users are used to. :)

What is possibly more awesome is the controllers, I'll keep quiet as they're not officially revealed yet but they're wireless, recharge with no wires (just sit them on the base no connectors, no wires, nothing).. and you'll be able to 'customise' the controler design to however you want to play.

going to be awesome.

The console looks like a glorifed PS2 and I don't like the idea of wireless controllers. I assume it can play DVDs since it's supported, which means the price is going to go up. I'd rather they remain game systems and keep the price down, instead of offering stuff that I can already do with a cheap DVD player.

Of course, since I'm a Nintendo fan (always have, always will), I'm interested in seeing what this new system has to offer. I wonder how much it will cost to download those older games.

You know, you could have placed this in the already existing E3 thread instead of wasting space with another extra thread...right??? <_<

Keep all E3 and next-gen console discussion to that topic.

Yea... I could have done that but then it would have been in the depth of a thread.

Huh? Glorified PS2?
It does look similar to the PS2-Slim, I'd say that it really is more a style of it's own.

Also what is shown above is the prototype. So they're looking to change it, make it even smaller.. hopefully they'll add a little more GameCube panash to the mix.
That said I feel Sony made a good decision with the PS2-Slim's design, very slim, very small, very sleak.. I actually liked it.

What you have to understand though is the sheer difference in size these consoles have.

The Revolution is effectively the same size as the PS2-Slim, yet has roughly the same power as the X-Box 360... both the 360 and PS3 are HUGE, we're talking around the same size as the original PS2 (which was U-G-L-Y).
360 looks quite nice, like some smaller desktop solutions, but the PS3 just looks horribly like a DELL printer or something.

If you have a GameCube, then I'd strongly suggest buying the Wavebird. This is simlar to how the Revolutions Controllers work. Though they only work for 4-5hrs gameplay, the new ones run for over 18 hours :D (a full days gaming)

Believe me it's a lot mroe fun to play your console without having to be near it. The controllers have like up to 300meters range.

Also not sure about the DVD side of things, and to be honest I don't care.
The PS2 had DVD, the X-Box had DVD.. and you know what I've NEVER EVER used that feature on them.

I mean I have a DVD Player (well got a recorder now) that at the time cost me £80.. considering I could get a GameCube for £150 and a PS2/X-Box for £250 at the time... it wasn't really a hard decision.

Especially given my friend used to play DVDs on his PS2, and they'd only play like 8:10 of them.. of those 8 a further 4 would render at the wrong Hz for his TV meaning they did that loopy thing where the picture constantly ran downwards and blured into the next one. On the whole he could only play a handful of DVDs, yet my player could run any I chose.

Seriously what the hell does a game console even need that feature for anyways? the point is to play games not sit down to a movie.

If you need a DVD play FGS they cost like £25-30 for a cheap one. It's ALOT cheaper than buying a £350 console.

I'm definitly a fanboy now.. heh. Backwards compatibility will be sweet :D

In black...

@Raven:
First off, do NOT EVER diss Dell...I am a diehard Dell fan, and proud of it: the quality is top-notch, Customer Service is highly efficient, and they're tough as all heck. To top it all off, their prices are so competitive it's mind-boggling. Ex: The DJ-20, at $250 each holds 20GB, and costs roughly $50 more than a10GB IPod (the normal ones).
That's 2x the storage, for 1/4 more money...sounds like a great deal to me!

Now, you say a console with built-in DVD costs 250, and a DVD player 80, or else a little over half.
You say your friend's didn't work most of the time.
Mine plays almost as good as a $250 DVD Player, and cost $100 when I bought it. My friends are the same, play extremely well.
So I suggest your friend either sell his off, or exchange it, 'cuz it sounds to me like he bought himself a defective PS2.

As for me, I hate all X-Bricks, like Nintendo (mostly the portables) quite a bit, but I really like the old PS2 (not the PSP so much), and I love the PS3...so sleeeeeeek...

Steve - June 21, 2005 02:02 PM (GMT)
I want an X-Brick, but only for "Godzilla: Save the Earth" and "Conker: Live and Re-loaded." And possibly "Jaws: Unleashed" and "Kung Fu Chaos." Halo can kiss my arse. Damn overrated franchise that my friends never shut up about... >_>
