Title: Sound problem

MrGuy - July 13, 2005 03:12 PM (GMT)
For some reason, the mute function for my computer won't turn off. No matter how many times I press the little button on my keyboard it stays mute. So I went in the control panel to fix it that way.

But whenever I press the little box it doesn't uncheck it. It just stays checked. All the other boxes work fine. I went into 'Advanced' and saw that it had 'Mute All' checked. So I tried to uncheck that but it wouldn't. Anyone have any idea why it's doing this and how to fix it?

No idea what might be causing the problem, but first off, make sure you have Place volume icon in taskbar checked.

Have you tried restarting into safe mode and seeing if you can get the sound to unmute there? (safe mode is accessed by tapping F8 during boot)

Also check your keyboard, if something spilled on the mute button, it may actually be constantly pressed, sending the Mute signal to windows.

Also, on each of the tabs, Audio and Voice, make sure the dropdown box reads SB Audigy Audio or whatever, nothing other than the sound card you are using should be in the dropdown boxes there.

Under the hardware tab make sure that your audigy card is marked as "working properly."

Goto device manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager) and make sure there is no red X's or yellow exclamation points over any thing.

If all else fails, uninstall and then reinstall new/updated drivers for your sound card.

If that still doesn't work, contact SB at www.soundblaster.com and request some help from their professionals.

I tried restarting my computer to see if installing updates would work. When I logged on, the sign at the bottom of the screen said that voume was on. I tried to play something and no sound. So I went to check the screen again and got this...

I've tried everything you said besides updating the driver and starting in safe mode. Should I try the safe mode now even though the screen's changed?

*Update* I reinstalled the driver and it sort of works. Sound and everything is fine but I can't adjust anything. In other words, I can't adjust the volume level. The screenshot above is still there, I can't touch anything.

*update2* I tweaked around and got the volume control working. I <3 HaTcH  . In thanks, I present to you this Speed Racer commercial.
