Title: DiVx to DVD
Description: My anime ep are talking up too much room

ZeRoRaVeN - August 5, 2005 01:57 AM (GMT)
I've got lots and lots of anime episodes totaling over 70GB this number might not actualy be alot compared to other people but I'm running seriously out of space on my drives. Buying a new drive is out of the question because I already have another external drive (with the eps so in the event of a emergency I can grab it and run) but its taking up too much space...the drive is much larger than 70GB but put together anime eps, numerous hl1/hl2 games/mods, and other miscalleous files, and my music...after having my ipod fail quite a bit I won't trust it with my library.

So what I need is a program that converts the anime eps, which are mostly DiVx movies to DVD...I got a DVD burner but I seem unable to burn DiVx movies the same way I would with a regular DVD...and roxio's DiVx to DVD thingy didn't work at first, then when I did the first file, it worked..with some bugs here and there but overall it worked. But the problem was that it ran as if it was recording some media off a camcorder, in other words I saw a little preview windows showing the movie playing, that's how fast it went. And when you got a ton full of eps...I don't think I'm ready for a CPU meltdown.

So does anybody know any easy programs or easier alternatives for me to get around this? Or am I stuck to wait and watch the movie as it is converted in a tiny little box?

Odd that it does that with Roxio, as it worked perfectly fine for me without doing what you're describing.

Also, I highly advise NOT to change the format to DVD. You'll probably be only able to fit 3, maybe 4 episodes per DVD. It's much simpler just to keep them as an .avi or .mkv file and fit like 20 episodes on. It'll save you a ton of money on DVDs.

If the reason you want to burn them to DVD format is to watch them on the TV (not recommended as most TVs cut off the subs), then there's always that DVD player that plays .avis and the like. Burning 20 episodes per DVD and getting that will be a ton cheaper then storing 70 gigs of anime in DVD format.

Also, while 70 gigs is not much at all, it's still a decent size. What series do you follow that you have that much stored?

I've just burned DivX stuff to CD (don't have a DVD burner) as data and played it straight up, but I don't know if your DVD player does that. You might want to check, since it'd be easier.

What you are looking for is a general avi to dvd buringing software. If you get the Nero 6 Ultra Edition Suite, it has Nero Vision Express, which will let you add content, (movies, videos, pictures), title screens, text and audio/voice over, convert all this to DVD video files (.vobs) and then burn them to a DVD with your dvd burner.

If you dont have a dvd burner, theres a good deal at tiger direct: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Ca...tlc.asp?CatId=4

Theres others out there too, liek Ulead something or other and I think sony has something.

Well my piority is to get them off the computer, but I thought since most of them are unwatched why not make them DVD player viewable at the same time. Both sides are happy. But I guess I forgot about the part of the size getting larger when you convert them. On disk with regular moving, and not converting I could fit an entire naruto series (like 1-25) on it.

As for what I have...hmm the complete zoids genesis raw series (1-17), trigun, cowboy bebop, hunter x hunter [and if I can find zoids], .hack osts, random gundam and bleach episoides, oh yes bleach ost, full metal, season 1 of CC(it sucks that I have most of the DVDs for CC/GF but not a single one for nz0, and maybe a few poor quality nz0 off from limewire..)

Nero is evil! because Roxio is better. :P

ooo I have longhorn build 5048...51% of PS2 zoids fuzors game..I think the original seeder is gone..the other peers have gotten only this far...currently downloading more naruto!

See this is what it looks like:

It's probably because I clicked preview, but that's the speed it going right? What is .avis?

MrGuy - August 5, 2005 03:21 PM (GMT)
.avi is a video format that most subbers use. Hard subbed. Such an outdated file type. It sucks that the majority of fansubbers are egotisical pricks and won't just switch over to .mkv (soft subs 4eva).

Converting to DVD format then burning it also takes a VERY long time. Like half a day for three episodes. Just burning the .avis would probably take an half hour at most.

I know what .avi is, but you said .avis...but avi has the best quality overall.

Some actual DVD players these days will play DivX avis...mine does, my parents' doesn't.

What i mean is if I take avis burned to a CD or DVD as data (like as if I were backing them up for storage), my DVD player will play them.

Actually, avi does not have the best quality out of the file types. It's just able to be relatively small while still containing a good deal of quality. The actual quality of the videos doesn't really depend much on the file type though, more on how it was encoded and what filters were used.

Also... about ".avis"... is it really THAT hard to figure out? It's the plural form on ".avi". All file extrensions end with three letters so something called ".avis" doesn't exist. But... dude... really! What does an 's' at the end of a noun usually mean!?

AVI files are hhuuugggeee....

Multiple words, eh saying .avis is really improper grammer and all and not a valid extension, so you confused me...say avis.

Did you also get the same screen I see on the roxio [see screenshot]?

intriging, sounds interesting, that would let you off the hook of configuring the menus yada yada and such. But my DVD player is about a year old...so I'm not sure mine will...I'd like the convience of being able to watch anime eps on TV...

A 145 meg to 200 meg file isn't large at all for what it's carrying. Unless you know of a better alternative other then soft subs. I'm sure the fansubbers would like to hear.

BTW, it's grammar. Best to spell it right when you're lecturing someone about it :P

And no, from what I can remember from the one DVD I did burn using Roxio, it did not have that screen.

Again, anime episodes on TV = bad choice. Most subs get cut off at the bottom. Chances are your DVD doesn't play them if it's that old. A got a DVD player a few months ago (a relatively expensive one) and it doesn't even play them. Better to search for it online. I believe I saw one over at Amazon for $50.

I can look up the model number for my DVD player if anyone wants it, but I don't know if they still make them. It was around 75 dollars, I think...

HaTcH - August 6, 2005 01:40 AM (GMT)
Heres an interesting idea, why not just burn the AVIs to a DVD as data files for your compter? If you find an ep you want to put on a DVD, then you can just copy the file(s) off the data cd and process them into a playable DVD. I dunno, would save you alot of time (and processor) to do it on demand instead of all at once. I mean, to convert like 2 hours of movie to DVD seems to take forever X_o.

Well I really considered that, but I didn't want to do that because it would mean burning double the amount of DVDs, because I use DVD-R, RW is too expensive. So I don't want to do that because of the cost.

Would be a nice thing to know, most DVD players don't declare them. Thanks.

Theres lots of other great file types, like mpeg...

HaTcH - August 7, 2005 01:26 AM (GMT)
Wait wait... why the heck would you have to use RW's to burn Data? Thats just stupid! You CAN use -R's for data, its what I use. Too bad my drive is a 2x and isn't compatable with +R's which are cheaper. RWs are ReWritable. I think it would actually take less DVDs to just back up as files instead of making them into dvd movie files.

~Also, a good program like Nero is capable of burning more than one session on any media, like CD-Rs or DVDs. Therefore there reall is no point to having RW... why delete when you can just add new?
