Title: Which did you get and which is better?

K-62 - August 6, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)
Well its been a good amount of time since the release of both handhelds, so let the personal opinions loose.

I got them both, but I found that the PSP(with the right prorams) did much more than the DS. I got my PSP to play GameBoy/GameBoy Color ,GBA, Neo Geo, NES, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, SNES and Wonderswan games via emus. The PSP was also more customizable than the DS, you are able to upload ypu own wallpapers and icons as well as little addons for some games.

Though I like the DS's touch screen it was no match for all the classic games I could play on my PSP.

HaTcH - August 6, 2005 02:06 AM (GMT)
I'm not really interested in spending any money on a new game device. My computer (well, computers in general) will always be superior and upgradeable as compared to a hand held gizmo. Thats exactly what I said about the Ipod, but look at me, I have one now (only cuz it was free!! :B)

Drk-X - August 6, 2005 03:26 AM (GMT)
The Playstation Portable is VERY lacking when it comes to unique games. Almost all the games on the PSP are simply ports of PS1 and PS2 games. The PSP works much better with other functions but not as a gaming handheld. It's really nice to have something that works as a Web Browser, portable image viewer, mp3 player, movie player, etc. But for the gaming experience on the PSP....just get a slim Ps2, slap a book cover on it, and stick it in your backpack...

The DS on the other hand, totally revolutionized the hand held market as a completely different kind of system. Sure, it doesn't work as well as you want with the older hand held gaming goods...that's why the GBA is still selling, not to mention you can play GBA games on the DS. But Nintendo has opened up a whole new world with the DS....touch screen and microphone utilization? Sounds awesome to me. Not to mention the obviously innovative Two-Screen system. Sure, it is a bit sad that a lot of rather poor 3rd party developers don't make good use of the DS's capabilities, mainly the two screens *coughTHQcough* but look at how much potential it has.

Scottfab - August 6, 2005 04:28 AM (GMT)
allegedly, most of nintendo's showing at this year's E3 wasnt the upcoming Nintendo Revolution, but lots and lots of great DS games. considering the DS price dropping, I think its going to be the console to get.

Unabhängiger Wolf - August 6, 2005 05:48 AM (GMT)
It sounds as if you just got the PSP to play ROMs, and not to play actual PSP games...

Anyway, I don't have both handhelds (my mom has a DS though, with one measly game), but if I had to choose, I'd go with the DS paws down. I've always been a fan of Nintendo, starting from the NES and onwards to the GCN (I don't like the N64 much though), so obviously I'd go with the DS.

The DS is cheaper, has more innovative stuff (touchpads, mic), has more games I actually want (Nintendogs, Jump Super Stars, Pokémon Pearl and Diamond), better quality parts (compared to Sony, they are) and has a better design.

JammerLea - August 6, 2005 06:03 AM (GMT)
OH NOES. You accused someone of only using PSP to play ROMS. OMG WTF HOW DARE YOU!! Such a HORRIBLE trangression shall be dealt with accordingly with the Mystical Object of Transgression Beat-Downs ™! *beats Wolf with an empty Pringles can*

<3

I have no opinion on the DS or PSP, but my best friend's brother won a PSP through McDonald's.

I've heard they have spiders and maggots in their burgers, but never PSPs...

Nah, I just ran out of money to buy PSP games.

Tilly - August 6, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
I still need a Game Boy Advance when it comes to handhelds. Not SP, regular old Advance, because I don't like handhelds unless they are some clear color. Er, there aren't any clear SP colors I've missed, are there?

Don't ask me why. I blame my Atomic Purple Game Boy Colors. Anything Game Boy just looks wrong to me if it's solid now...

Um...do either of them have region issues? One reason I like my Game Boy is if it says it works on Game Boy Color, I can play it, no "help, this is Japanese!" *implode* or anything. Okay, so I bought one Japanese game, but considering how few games I have...

Drk-X - August 6, 2005 04:55 PM (GMT)
Nintendo consoles have never had region issues. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to play Rockman.exe 5 DS Twin Leaders on my US bought DS.

....the PSP on the other hand does have region lock for both games and DVDs....totally blows if you wanted the original version of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children to come with it on UMD...

K-62 - August 6, 2005 05:02 PM (GMT)
Im pretty sure you can bypass that, if you havent updated your PSP's OS.

NEVER UPDATE ITS EVIL!!!!

Drk-X - August 6, 2005 05:10 PM (GMT)
..but then again, that may cause you to miss the web browser update feature meaning you'll be doomed to a keyboard-less web browser through the use of Wipeout....<_<

K-62 - August 6, 2005 05:24 PM (GMT)
That where your wrong theres already 2 really well made browers made by a third party. Though they are in japanese its better than the crappy key input Sony can up with.

Drk-X - August 6, 2005 05:29 PM (GMT)
...learn how to use apostrophes where they matter... <_<

I've already seen one of the browsers...it's not that great as it can't view most pages without errors. Not to mention the kana is a bit hard to read... <_<

K-62 - August 6, 2005 05:40 PM (GMT)
It's a matter of preference. Personally I dont mine the errors and the images that dont load because I dont used it too much. There's no point really because you can download much. So, I'll stick to my 1.5 with Homebrew. You can play Super Smash Brothers 2-D :D :D :D

HaTcH - August 7, 2005 01:14 AM (GMT)
I know one person who has a PSP and all I can say is that now, I associate PSPs with rich kids who like to flagrantly show off what they have...

Atrophy Within - August 7, 2005 02:05 AM (GMT)
I had both, non were enjoyable in my opinion. Although they would be great for jury duty. I hate the trial I am on, it will take forever. grrrrr

Let me elaborate on the "better design" bit:

The PSP is, for all intents and purposes, designed like the old GBA - its screen is right there, and the buttons are on the sides.

The DS is rather closer, essentially, to the GBA-SP, with a flip-screen. Therein lies its advantage, as the DS's screen is protected, so that you don't really NEED a carry-case to avoid scratching the screen.

The PSP, you'd better plan on carrying it in a case most of the times, unless you're neurotic about it, which most ppl are not.

I've had my SP since it came out, and it's a little beat-up, but the screen is in perfect shape. A friend of mine bought an old GBA in perfect condition some six months later - its screen is now scratched to the point of being barely legible.

And yes, since it can play DS and GBA games, that's 2x as many gaming options, essentially.

K-62 - August 10, 2005 06:24 PM (GMT)
Yes, but the PSP can play GBA games also with the right programs on your momory stick.

Ya thats the down side its screen is not protected. Also you can see you finger prints all over the button areas and screen.

Tilly - August 10, 2005 06:27 PM (GMT)
My Game Boy Colors have yet to have screen issues...one has a couple scratches, but it DID have something pointy and heavy dropped on it, so that considered it held up well.

Are GBAs really that much worse?

Zelos - August 11, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)
I'm a pirate myself (Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Flash, a few other PC applications, a few older PC games and a couple newer ones, a handful of SNES ROMs, and a ton of GBC/GBA ROMs) but I can't really consider emulation on the PSP as being an advantage as not everyone will be willing to use it, and then the moral issue comes into play. Besides, buy a GBA flash cart and their emulation capabilities are pretty much matched then.

I have a DS and only a DS, but I would like to get a PSP sometimes when I have $250 to waste, if not only for the niftyness of it.

Current games I have for my DS:

-Kirby Canvas Curse
-Meteos
-Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
-Yoshi Touch & Go
-Super Mario 64 DS
-Feel The Magic XY XX
-Nintendogs: Dachshund and Friends (Pre-order)

Games I'm looking forward to for the DS:

-Metroid Prime: Hunters
-Mario Kart DS
-Animal Crossing DS
-Lost In Blue
-Lunar: Dragon Song
-Trace Memory
-Pokemon Diamond
-Mario & Luigi 2
-Legend of Zelda DS

The list of games I want for the PSP both available now and in the future:

-Tales of Eternia
-Lumines

I think those lists speak for themselves.

Unabhängiger Wolf - August 11, 2005 02:04 AM (GMT)
GBAs are NOT worse. If you get a carrying case, or take good care of your GBA, you'd never need to worry about damaging the screen. I've had a GBA since launch and the screen is as good as ever, whereas the other GBAs in the house (like my little sister's) have scratched screens.

Seriously, as long as you take good care of it, there should be no issue with damaged screens.

Scottfab - August 11, 2005 05:36 AM (GMT)
Zelos, is a DS even emulatorable?

Zelos - August 11, 2005 08:57 PM (GMT)
You mean, can you get an emulator that plays DS games? I don't see why it wouldn't, it would probably be hard since every single platform (PC, PDA, and so on) will have to use a different input device for the touch screen (PC would use the mouse, PDAs their touch screen, and you’d have to get creative for really anything else) but the DS' encryption has already been cracked to an extent and work on it is probably progressing right now. I don't see anything stopping a DS emulator from appearing sometime next year.

Or do you mean can you run emulators of other consoles on the DS? If so, yes, as there are many emulators for different older systems that can run on a GBA flash cart, some flash carts even have emulators built in. Once DS flash carts are perfected I expect work to begin on more advanced emulators such as one for the SNES that actually works. Well, people are already making homebrew DS applications, so emulators using the DS could be made now but would be pretty much useless since the current method of running DS homebrew software on an actual DS is so complicated.

Ratatosk Marina - August 12, 2005 12:26 AM (GMT)
I have a Nintendo DS and the only game I have for it is Super Mario DS. Looking forward to playing Nintendogs once it comes out. The PSP does look good but it's too expensive at the moment. I don't think I'll ever get one though.

Fury OD - August 12, 2005 03:14 AM (GMT)
 I don't know what to get PSP with its MP3 payer and DS with its touch screen and a lot of anime games...

You shouldnt get it for that reason alone(even though that pretty much ture if Im getting what "cool" for you means) cause its a large price tag; around $300USD I think.

Fury OD - August 13, 2005 03:15 AM (GMT)
 Isnt it 250 ????

Anyway another reason I might want to get it ,is because then I don't have to go out and buy an MP3 player...And its cusomeble...

Blade Liger Mirage - August 13, 2005 08:22 PM (GMT)
I only have the DS, so I wouldn't be giving a fair opinion, but I think the DS is good, but lacking in games. The stick is also hard to get use to, and the DS is just plain....blocky. The controls are none to easy to use.

The PSP, I have no idea, but I still think the DS is good, a few of its games being pretty fun

That's seriously the lamest reason I've heard for getting a PSP..... so if I suddenly broke my PSP I would suddenly lose all my dancing skills, the ability to pick up girls, or any ability affiliated to being cool??? <_<

Jestsunami - September 8, 2005 05:39 AM (GMT)
I got the DS, even though it may seem like the PSP is better, i think the DS will make a comeback, the only reason it is not as good is because they're really aren't manny games out for it. . . yet.

PlushRayseTiger - September 8, 2005 08:24 PM (GMT)
I got a DS and it has TONS of good games. All at once... can't keep up. PSP is going through a dry spell. There's kirby, meteos, AWDS, megaman, SM64DS, nintendogs, nanostray, jump superstars, probably more that I forgot.

For now though, GBA> all

Tilly - September 8, 2005 08:48 PM (GMT)
Hey, I still like Game Boy Colors, because I have two and thus can actually *play* games for them, giving them the biggest selection of all!

Don't anybody say ROMs. I poked one once and hated it...though it was worth the trouble to get this...

Hehehehe.

Wait, have I already posted in this thread? *random brain vacancy*

Unabhängiger Wolf - September 8, 2005 10:41 PM (GMT)
I use ROMs, but it's not what you think. I sometimes DL GBA ROMs to see how the game is. If it's awesome, I'll buy the actual game. If it sucks, I won't. I use it as a 'rental' service. I've purchased Pokémon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire this way. I played a ROM of the first Pokémon pinball game and I hated it. I didn't think the 2nd game would be any better, but it was, thanks to the ROM I played.

Tilly - September 8, 2005 11:48 PM (GMT)
Oooh, I love Pokemon Pinball. I just can't remember where my copy is, aaack...

And I wouldn't mind a ROM of the one Zoids game I have, but so I could make a walkthrough with screenshots and such, since there seems to be nothing out there about it. I tried photographing the screen. It didn't really work...

I dont think he means that. Not to be racist or anything, but I think by 'cool' he means all those 'wanster' (I dont mean white person trying to be black, I mean it as wanna be ganster person) people that think they're all that have got psps that were stolen and sold to them for like $100.

Dry spell?! the PSP is selling better than ever since it been released in the UK. Sony has annoced that they are shipping 17.2 Million UMDs world-wide and claims that 9 million UMD games and 8.2 million UMD movies have been sold. Also PSPs made $37,500,000US from Korea sales in 3 months.

There is a major downside to the PSP; you have to clean the surface every time you finish playing to make it look shinny again. Mine now has a few small scratches from all the cleaning and playing, Im going to need to wax the screen or something.

PlushRayseTiger - September 9, 2005 02:11 AM (GMT)
Dry spell of games I find intresting. I like the way the DS feels in my hand. Because I'm left-handed, I have an easier time playing stylus only games than my classmates :D I've always been a bit of a control freak. B) We need translucent systems bad. *hugs GBC and GBA*
