Title: The Secret of NIMH
Steve - August 10, 2005 02:13 PM (GMT)
Yeah. I saw "The Secret of NIMH" the other day... it was pretty good. I liked it...
It told a good story, the characters were interesting, and the animation was *very* well done for its day and age... there's something I really like about the animation in Don Bluth films. I can't quite put my finder on it, but something about their style of animating things clicks nicely in my mind.
I *really* liked the Owl. Man, was that owl kickass looking. They easily coulda just made it an ordinary owl, but they made it all overdramatic and such... made him hulking and imposing, made his talons look all warty and ancient, had his eyes glow, made the feathery tufts all long and wispy... I really like how they modified the owl and made it look ancient and almost godlike...
And Dragon, the cat, was really ferkin' cool as well. All sadistic and vicious and predatory looking... the way a mouse would see a cat. We see our cats as these cute little fluffy pets, but to their prey, they're monstrous, unstoppable killing machines.
For the most part, I liked the characters. Mrs Brisby made for a good heroine, and I liked Jeremy the crow's eccentricities. The kids irked me on occasion, but not seriously so...
Overall, I liked the Secret of NIHM. But I still like "The Land Before Time" better. 'Cos it has Dinosaurs in it! I award the secret of NIHM a 7.5 out of 10.

And Justin was freakin' COOL. I'd act more fangirlish over him, but I'd probably scare people. XD
Haha, I've loved that movie since I was in elementary school. I actually watched it just a couple weeks ago too. For one thing, I love rodents. I love how they animate the animals... how easily Mrs. Brisby goes from looking like an anthropomorphic mouse to running around, using the movements of a real mouse. The fluidity is one thing that I love about American animation.
And the older Don Bluth films are so good, since they actually touch upon darker ground. Secret of NIMH, Land Before Time, All Dogs Go To Heaven, An American Tail... I like them better than the newer ones such as Anastasia and Titan A.E., though I enjoyed those in their own right as well.
I loved all the special effects in NIMH, like the sparkly writing in Nicodemus' journal. I liked how they did Nicodemus too, for about the same reasons as the Great Owl. He wasn't pretty by any means, more creepy, yet still somehow majestic and cool. I wish they had shown a better view of Brutus.
I just can't remember how it compares to the original book anymore, I read that in 4th grade. ^^;
Stay away from the sequel movie, it causes CANCER. x_o;;

Great movie...LOUSY ending...
I love the older Bluth movies. Ever since ADgTH, his movies got worse and worse. He absolutely sucks now. That's sad.
Justin is one of those Toons that I can safely say is hot :D He's the only hot cartoon character I've found.

WHAT?! ARE THEY INSANE?!?! That sequel had to have been one of the worst pieces of garbage I've ever seen! I'm still trying to block all of it from my memory.
btw, I'm sad. That Justin fanlisting hasn't been updated in over a year. D=

I LOVED that movie when I was a kid, still do!
Are you guys crazy, fangirling over Justin. Just kidding, count me in :D
By the way, did anybody else think Jenner was cool or am I just twisted ;)

NIMH is a great movie. Extremely well done for american animation during its time. It had wonderful characters and a good story. Both Jenner and Justin are good characters but my favorite character would have to be the Jeremy. Too bad the sequel turned out to be trash. o_x It's sad you don't see that many animated movies like that anymore. American 2-D animation is just going down the tubes. Most companies now (*cough*DISNEY*cough*DREAMWORKS*Cough) are going for 3-D animation. While I'm not against 3-D animation I think it's a bit overrated.

I'm sure they'll flaunt all their CGI animation specialness and then once people get over the hype we'll start seeing some 'good ol' classical animation' again. At least that's what I'm hoping for. The only recent CG movie I really liked was Shrek 2.
Unabhängiger Wolf - August 12, 2005 05:43 AM (GMT)
I don't like Jenner, but his design was pretty darn cool. He's the most evillest looking cartoon rat I've seen.
I hate the fact that everyone's into CGI these days. Disney has already shut down several classical animation departments. I haven't seen many good American shows/movies lately, and I fear my interest in American animation would fade away completely if this trend continues. While I am not against CGI, I prefer hand-drawn stuff. It's more pleasing to look at.
It's thanks to Disney (formally my favourite animation studio) that I have turned to anime now for all my cartoon needs >:|

I don't want to destroy American animation! While they are at an all-time low nowadays, the older shows/movies rocked. You can't forget all the classics, like Gargoyles, Tale Spin, Beast Wars...

STAR TREK.
What? I loved the animted Star Trek as a kid...

There are some studios in America that want to keep American Animation alive. Some Disney animators formed a group that's only interested in hand-drawn animation after they were kicked out of working at Disney. Currently they are working on a few movie projects. Other small animation studios are also working on projects of their own. Here's a good example of one.

It would be nice to see hand-drawn animation come back to life in America. Only time will tell I guess...

MINH was indeed a very awesome movie. I thought it compared poorly to the book, especially in terms of the ending and in character development, but then again most movies don't compare well to the book. Visually, it was amazing, I love all the dark lurid colors. And yeah, that owl was just so wonderfully creepy.
One thing the book went into, though was there was more backstory to how the rats of NIMH gained their intelligence. It was actually quite sad and a little disturbing. But otherwise, I simply adore the movie.
