Title: My Computer wont start
K-62 - August 10, 2005 05:21 PM (GMT)
It started as a blue screen telling me that I have some unbootable thing. So, I did what I always do to fix it. I removed my RAM and moved it around, but then when I turned it on it wouldnt start. The monitor wouldnt connect(the light was blinking and there was no display on the screen) and the tower didnt make the usual start up noises. Did I brake something when I opened up the case? Does anyone know whats wrong?

Does your computer have an on board video card which is not being used? If so, try moving your monitor cable to the onboard video port.
Check your RAM, its possible that it isn't connected properly. I've seen it many times before, someone has one misconnected RAM chip but didn't realise it and then that becomes the last thing they check. RAM is sometimes fickle with how its connected. Rambus for instance requires these things: Bank 0 must be filled first, each bank must be filled with 2 of the exact same ram chips. If a bank is unused, it requires a pair of continuity RIMMs.. So when you moved your RAM around, its possible you mismatched them. Put ones that look exactly the same, next to each other. Thats probably a good practice...
Unbootable thing... Hmm.. You don't have any USB devices that store data connected to your computer, such as a memory card reader or an Ipod. Disconnect that and then try starting the computer again. Maybe your hard drive failed.
Finally, I've had this same problem when my power supply died. What happens, is the power supply does not charge the board correctly, and creates brown spots. These then screw with your attached devices, like network cards and video cards, and cause them to stop working. If you have another Power Supply (in another computer) try and swap them to see if thats the problem. (if you dont believe me that powersupplies go, have a peek at this:

Thanks for your help Hatch. I'll check the RAM and power supply later, I'm too far from home right now. I dont think the cable for the monitor fits into the plug for the video card, but I'll try to see if it does.
I believe you if its the power supply its going to be my 3rd one in 4-5 years. Im hoping its not the power supply casue Im broke at the moment. Funny thing really my problem start after I was helping my friend with his computer, his power supply had broke and his new ones was messing with his CD drives.
I was also wondering my hard drive messes up and I have to reformatted aleast once every 2 months its a Seagate(I think its spelt like that) and people are telling my how Seagate drives are bad, should I get a new one?

Well if it "goes bad" thats a signal that its going to iminently fail. So yes, get a new one (and make sure its an upgrade!! ;))
There was one other thing I wanted to say, have you added any new PCI devices to the computer lately? Sometimes hardware changes can cause problems at boot. Try removing your modem, if you have one.. I remember my dad's old computer was struck by lightning and the thing that screwed up the computer was the modem. So he replaced it and all was well.

I checked the RAM I put it in every slot and in every way I can think of(I only have 2 sticks and 3 slots). I dont think its the power supply since the monitor mother board light is on and all the fans are on, even the one on the video card. Bust I still cant get the monitor to connect the light is still blinking, I tryed removing the video card and plugging it back in, for some reason I even oiled the little fan(I took me 20mins to get it back in; damn coving that makes it so that the screws arnt exposed).
I removed the modem, but there was no change. Im thinking its the monitor cable, I would switch the cable but its one of those weird ones so Im going to have to go buy a new one. Im just going to give up and tell my dad, he has some past electronic and we have one of those thingies that test for the input and out put of something along with its presant current flow(I read the label :D :D :D)

Well, like I was saying, when a power supply goes the entire thing doesnt stop working. A computer power supply produces many different voltages, 12, 5, 3.3, 2.5... so when you turn your computer on, the 12 volt is probably working, and that is doing the fans and the hard drive motors, but perhaps the 3.3 volt is screwed up. That would control the ram and the processor.
If you want to test to see if your power supply is ok, you could buy a $500 tester (XD) or you can turn it on for like 15 minutes, then turn it off, disconnect it and quickly take it apart to see if it was overheating. From what I've seen, power supply failure is synonymous with over heating. Theres this coil thing, yellow in all mine, that melted in every bad power supply. The computer would sorta work but then stop, at the moment the PS overheated. You can also test your video card buy putting in another one that you know works. (luckily for me I have like 5 spare ones Xp)
Your monitor cable is some kind of DV thing? Or is it a 15 pin one? 15 ones are standard--unless your using a mac...
A multimiter? Ah excellent. But a word to the wise, a power supply will not work at all if it hooked up to the mother board, so testing it is gonna be wierd... This is from past experience.
Okok, one last solution. Disconnect the power and drive cables to your hard drives and your cdroms/floppys. Take every PCI card out, except the video card. Un plug every cord on the back except for your keyboard, mouse, power, and video cable. Bascially all we want is a bare bones mother board computer. Try that. When you turn it on, does it do anythign different? Does the motherboard beep?

LOL I dont think I can put it back together again.
The cable is almost 15 pin its has like 12 pins. Im not using a Mac so I dont know, maybe my monitor is weird.
Im not sure if its a multimiter or not, but I does have an attachment that plugs into the mother board and power supply. I tryed pluging it in but cant get the display to work and the buttons arnt in english. I pressed them all but it didnt work.

All fixed now it turned out that I brake a small thingy(node?) while I was removing RAM. Just had to weld it back together all fixed now, YAY!
