Title: Family Guy vs The Simpsons
Steve - September 24, 2005 10:22 PM (GMT)
Wheeee... I just got seasons one and two of Family Guy on DVD the other day...
I'm soooooooooooo HAPPY that they've finally started making new episodes of Family Guy... I remember how disappointed I was when it got cancelled a few years ago... it truely saddened me. Few things suck worse then one of your favourite shows gets booted off the air...
Man, is it great to have Family Guy back! I finally have something to watch on TV now! ^_________^ And American Dad, while pretty much the same as Family Guy, is a fun show as well.
I've always resented people who criticised it for being little more then a cheap Simpsons knock off... so they both star a stupid, lazy, drunken dad as their main character. That *hardly* makes Family Guy a Simpsons clone... it's simply yet another addition to the "Animated Sitcom" genre. Family Guy has a completely different style of humour overall... to me, it feels *very* different from the Simpsons... the humour is far more off-the-wall and random; logic flies straight out the window on Family Guy. They just do whatever is funny. Ironically enough, recent episodes of the Simpsons try to copy this style of humour, which just doesn't *work* for it. If the Simpsons are trying to act like Family Guy, then the latter must be doing *something* right. :P Family Guy = makes me laugh. The Simpsons = makes me shake my head in disgust now.
Of course, I've always resented people who accuse anything of being a ripoff of something else... I can relate to that sort of criticism, what with all the bashing I myself have recieved with my original comic series, "Kreaturez", which is often accused of being a cheap Pokemon clone. (I've put a helluvalot of effort into creating interesting, likeable, original characters, and have been trying to write a more character driven story... and I've had to create all 400+ of my Kreatures. By myself. With no help. It annoys me when people accuse my OSI of being a "clone" when all they share in common is the basic idea. Family Guy and The Simpsons are the same way. They share a few of the same sitcom cliches, but the style, the flavour, the humour... its NOTHING alike.
More often then not, I take the side of what's being accused of being a ripoff rather then the original source; a lot of the time, what's being criticised only shares a few vague similarities in common with the other thing, and otherwise feels/looks/acts completely different... kinda like how calling Zoids a cheap Gundam knock-off will tick off a Zoid fan rather effectively. Zoids and Gundam share the same "giant warring mecha" concept, but are otherwise different.
Aaaaand it doesn't help that I've slowly grown to despise the Simpsons... this once great show has degenerated so much over the years... the characters have de-evolved into irritating charicatures of themselves. Homer, for example. He's gotten too "cute." He's also getting progressively dumber, to the point where he's gotten *rediculously* stupid. The show seems to have died 'round 1998. After that, the Simpsons went from being funny to just lame... every time I watch the Simpsons now, I'm embarassed for it... and I've seen the once-cool old episodes a million times now, and they're both dated, and no longer funny... I watch the Simpsons now and claw at my head in agony, screaming "Who the **** are you obnoxious wannabes, and what have you done with Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa?!"
Bleh. I admit, I like the Simpsons, but it needs to die. If I want my animated Sitcom fix, I'll gladly choose Family Guy over the Simpsons nine times out of ten. And if Family Guy isn't on, I'll watch Futurama. Or South Park.

I hate them both, but Family guy turly is crap of all craps. Simpsons isnt funny no more but Family Guy is just disgusing. Its their whole lets 'see how fair we can push the line' concept that I hate so much.
Steve I dont get how you can hate that Homer has been dumbed down when you say Family Guy quote "makes me laugh". Family Guy is based on dumbassness, they are the original retarded humor cartoon show. And Simpsons is not acting like Family Guy its the other way around, if Matt Goren never first thought up the loverable disfuctional family we know and love as the Simpsons there wont be no Family Guy.
Everything is a rip off of Seinfeld.

The simpsons are more of a clsic to me. Family Guy is really a new version of the simpsons but only dumber,no offence steve, but that show is just sick....100% sick...

The Simpsons didn't used to have "random" style humor in it. Watch episodes from the early seasons and compare them to the newer eps; totally different style. Episodes from 2000 onwards are wackier, more outlandish, more off-the-wall, and random... and Family Guy premiered in 1999. Funny coincidence, that. :P
My point is that Family Guy *started off* stupid. It's always been off the wall and random and bizarre. The Simpsons is (was) more like a standard sitcom, only animated. But nowadays its more random. And I'm pissed off with how the characters on the Simpsons have degenerated and decayed. Family Guy's humour is fresh, different, and a nice change of pace after 15 years or so of the Simpsons.

Family Guys type of humor is what is sometimes called garbage humor(or something like that). Family Guy was pretty funny at the begining but it has turned into an animated dirty joke. There are so many inappriate things they suggest.
I agree Simpsons has been dumbed down a lot(there never uses to be so many chockings) and I also agree it has become meaningless. Its become one big spot fill that not funny.

I don't think its funny neither. When I look at it lolololol does not come out my mouth, its more like ILLLLLLLL, or YUCK, or NASTYyyyy.....but lets give credit to the lucky rass people who made it, and is now swimming in a billion dollars...

I'm not that fond of Family Guy...though more out of lack of interest. I never got Seinfeld or Friends either, though. I like the older Simpsons quite a lot, though the newer ones are mostly meh.
And I can appreciate pervy if it's done well, to a point. *idly pokes the Bottom episode with the chess, snickers*

Friends is like Seifeld just add crappiness and 2 more main charator and subtact the Soup Nazi(he's so funny) No soup for you!
This kind of "pervy" is bad I gave an example in that rant I made awhile back. Its almost cartoon porn with pg13 slapped on it.

Wow. Since Seinfeld's pretty much the epitome of crap, then Friends must be so bad that it kills little children. Which is untrue because it has Courtney Cox and she can not possibly do wrong.
They never put good episodes of the Simpsons on anymore. It's always either the really old ones or the really new ones. Both of which suck. Family Guy is better because it simply makes me laugh, though like the Simpsons, the REALLY old episodes and the newer ones aren't that good. I feel that the humor in Family Guy has been kind of slipping recently.
Though I have no problem with the type of jokes they tell. It's dirty. So what? Dirty humor is funny humor. Family Guy's humor is more based upon being like real life, but an extremely over the top, funny view of life. The way they exchange dialogue (mostly Stewie and Brian) is absolutely fantastic. Writing genius.
But yeah, slipping recently.

I haven't seen much of The Simpson's, so I can't really speak about that, but I have watched a good bit of Family Guy and enjoy it quite a bit, both the newer episdoes and the older ones I've started seeing recently (ever since Adult Swim decided to air the older episodes).
I suppose rather or not you like Family Guy depends on your taste in humor and just how much "bad stuff" you can stand. My taste in humor is rather dark and sick (even slightly morbid, I'll admit) so I find Family Guy quite amusing. If you're clean and can't stand sick stuff, however, then that's another story.

^ which makes perfect sense as shows like Family Guy, Simpsons, or any comedy of the sort, are NOT intended for ll4m4s...
It's comedy...it's purpose? To make you laugh. I highly doubt the majority of the fans of the Simpsons truly care about the character development of Homer or Peter Griffin, they just like watching them go at it. It's not meant for that type of audience.
Scottfab - September 25, 2005 10:31 AM (GMT)
the original family guy episodes were alot funnier than these new ones. they have the same formula as the originals, but are lacking in its creativity and humor. they're still funny, just not as funny. things go downhill over time. simpsons did too.
The Zombie - September 26, 2005 07:51 PM (GMT)
My opinion... They're both funny in their own right to be perfectly honest. There are parts that are funny, there are parts that arte stupid, there are even parts that should have been left out. But to each their own, and if those two shows are something you do not like, just change the channel. Watch C-SPAN or something...
I've been watching the Simpsons since I was a small child. So I honestly favor them more than Family Guy, and American Dad... Well, I think it was another attempt after Family Guy supposedly failed. Besides... I think Homer's reactions are funny as hell... XD
