Title: Firefox... on the TV?

HaTcH - February 7, 2006 02:53 AM (GMT)
The Firefox Flicks Ad Contest is On!

This competition signals a new stage in the evolution of our Spread Firefox activities. We're going "live" and changing the world of grass-roots marketing once again.

We're contacting you with two big requests for help. The first request is for those of you who have the desire to participate in the production of a tv-quality advertisement for Firefox to dive in and make it happen. We've still got nearly two months for you to put something amazing together and submit it to the competition.

The second, and critically important request, is that each and every one of you help us get the word out about the Firefox Flicks Ad Contest. What are some of the ways you can help us with that? Here are just a few:

* If you know someone in "the business" -- whether a professional, a student, or a hobbyist, reach out to them through email and let them know about Firefox Flicks. You can use any of the text below and you can send them to www.firefoxflicks.com for more information.
* If you hang out on any forums or message boards where creative types gather -- either at school or in the media web communities, submit a post letting them know about this very cool opportunity at "fame and fortune" ;-) well, at least the "fame" part.
* If you go to a school with any kind of visual media program, from film, to video, to animation, or advertising, print out some Firefox Flicks Flyers and post them anywhere appropriate (and legal.)
* Submit stories to school newspapers, both online and off. You can pull content from the information below or anywhere at the Flicks Site or Backstage Blog.
* Post about Firefox Flicks it at your own weblog.
* Put up a Firefox Flicks button on your blog, your webpage, or in your forum signatures.

The more people that hear about this competition, the more likely we are to get a lot of high-quality submissions. We're counting on you all to help get the word out. And this list of outreach opportunities is just a suggestion. If you can think of other ways to help spread the word, please do -- and share those with us at the Backstage Blog!

You all have changed the way software is marketed and set a new standard for open source community action. Let's take it to the next level with Firefox Flicks.

I've heard this somewhat before...I didn't bother to pay it much mind though.

EDIT: I'm disappointed by the looks of the posters though.

Firefox can have my devotion again when they make a version of 1.5 that doesn't break all my extensions and the ability to download them again or have an ugly prefs thingy. The only thing it seemed to do right was uninstall painlessly.

*pats returned copy of 1.0.7*

At least you didn't let me down, GIMP and K-meleon ;_;.

I did see a local car dealer showing Firefox rather plainly in the "go to our website!" bit of their ad, though. That was cool, especially since it looked to be a customized toolbar beyond the stock.

Amusingly clever. Make a 'contest' to have someone make them a free commercial. Still gotta pay for tv space though.
