Title: Whatcha got under your case?

HaTcH - March 11, 2006 07:30 PM (GMT)
Its been done before, but lets do it again. This time with added flair!

Gateway 500X: ( http://www.bearcreekfire.com/zoids3d/downl.../deskbottom.jpg ) (called 'powercore')
-->2.5ghz P-IV
-->1.0gb Rambus pc1066 RAM
-->3 hard drives, 2 IDE (60gb, 80gb) and 1 SATA (250gb)
-->3 Operating Systems (Windows XP, Windows 98, and Gentoo Linux 2.6)
-->DVD single layer burner
Nothing really beyond that, unless you think my (original) video card is any good...
-->nVidia GeForce4 something, 128mb memory, AGP

HP dv8000 ( http://www.bearcreekfire.com/zoids3d/downl...ages/dv8000.jpg ) (called 'thel33t')
-->2.0ghz AMD Turion64
-->512mb RAM
-->80gb hard drive
-->Wireless
-->DVD Dual Layer burner
-->ATI Radeon Xpress 200M, 128mb dedicated video memory.
-->Windows XP

My other random parts computers:
Dell XPS 400 ( http://www.bearcreekfire.com/zoids3d/downl...es/dimented.jpg ) (called 'dimented') [the torrent box]
-->400mhz P-2
-->128mb RAM (??)
-->8mb Matrox AGP graphics
-->20gb hard drive
-->Windows 98se

Gateway 2000 ( http://www.bearcreekfire.com/zoids3d/downl...images/g266.jpg ) (called 'g266')
-->266mhz P-2
-->8gb hard drive (?)
-->32mb generic PCI videocard
-->Windows 98se

HP Kayak XU ( http://www.bearcreekfire.com/zoids3d/downl...mages/kayak.jpg ) (called 'monona')
-->450mhz P-2 (and second proc slot, not used)
-->4 or 5gb SCSI hard drive
-->8-32mb generic AGP videocard
-->Gentoo Linux

Other random stuff:
( http://www.bearcreekfire.com/zoids3d/downl...images/junk.jpg )
This picture is of my computer bone/grave yard. If you study it closely, theres the Kayak XU there.. cuz I really have no use for it.. Theres a Gateway 2000 P5-100 in the front, On top of the XU is an old compaq presario or some crap. On the left side is another Gateway 2000 P5-75, and above it is an Apple. (the only one of its kind) Above that is an old printer, HP deskjet something or other (needs ink :() Coming toward you on the bench on the left are some monitors and another printer. If you look at the shelf of the right, theres some old hard drives/video cards/modems/Zip drives and that sort of crap. I also seem to be amassing a power supply mountain... XD

-768 MB RAM
-2 HDD (internal: 40GB, External: 80GB)
-DVD/CDRW combo drive

Nothing really fancy here, but nevertheless our family owns three computers; one desktop for me, one desktop for my sister, and a laptop for my mom. Both my sister’s and mom’s are the cheapest Dells we could get in their category (though my sister’s has been upgraded a tiny bit), but mine is 100% custom built :) It actually used to be my mom’s, however it’s better then the one I was using then, so I gave that one to my Grandpa when he moved out and took over this one since my mom didn’t use it that much anyway. She then changed her mind and got herself a laptop...

Anyways, the specs for mine are:

My Not So 1337 Computer
-Antec Solution SLK1650B Case
-Included Power Supply
-ECS 760GX-M Socket 754 Motherboard
-AMD Sempron 64 2600+ Palermo Core Retail Processor
- PQI Power Series 512MB DDR SDRAM PC3200 & Wintec 512MB DDR SDRAM PC3200 Memory
-Samsung Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive
- Western Digital Caviar SE SATA 80GB 8MB Cache & Western Digital Caviar SE Ultra ATA 100 80GB 8MB Cache Hard Drives
-Lite-On SOHC-5236V DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive & Lite-On SOHD-16P9SV DVD Drive
-Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600 128MB AGP Video Card
-Creative SoundBlaster Live! Sound Card

-Logitech MX310 Wired Optical Mouse
-Logitech Ultra X Wired Keyboard
-Logitech X-230 2.1 Speakers
-Dell Ultrasharp 1905FP 19” LCD Monitor

-Windows XP SP2

I don’t know the exact specs for either of the other two computers, and am to lazy to look them up, but they both use integrated audio/video, 80GB Hard Drives, 512MB Memory, slower Celeron (Celeron M in the case of the laptop) Processors, wireless cards, and stock peripherals (17” CRT for sister’s desktop, 15.4” LCD for mom’s laptop)

I desperately want to get an Athlon 64 3000+ and a Geforce 6600 GT sometime, but I just don’t have the money :(

Tilly - March 12, 2006 01:27 AM (GMT)
I can't remember shinybob's exact specs. I suck. 'tis a Gateway laptop.

Pentium 4 (1.5-2 ghz? Something in that range), 256mb RAM (aka "not enough spammit"), some kind of integrated crap graphics, CD burner/DVD drive (aka "burn faster you dumb thing"), 38(?) gig hard drive (aka "helpme").

And I've got the old Gateway, which I need to do something with. Pentium II 400, 56mb RAM, busted CD drive that I can't replace (both ends of the cabes are STUCK), evil monitor, Windows 98 (no SE)...and some Voodoo card thing that used to be cool.

There's also the family computer, which can be summed up with "nicer than mine, but I have more graphics programs, so there?"

K-62 - March 12, 2006 01:50 AM (GMT)
Crappy no name white case
-P4 2.4ghz (hoping to get a dual core soon)
-512mb RAM
-2x no name 500mb HDD (my best things :) )
-Windows XP no service pack
-GeForce 4 128MB
-slow no name 8x24x10x24 DVD/CDRW
-no name floppy

I also have pretty crappy, most likely stolen P4 2ghz Samsung laptop that I got for $250 at a pawn shop.

Momonga - March 12, 2006 02:09 AM (GMT)
Don't ask me these things. I wouldn't have a clue.

I have a crappy computer that I got from dad's work. Windows 95, 2GB harddrive ALMOST.. and a few other things, but not much.

The family computer, that I probably spend more time on, is a *copies down from brocure*
eMac.. with..
Power PC G4 1.25GHz processor
167MHz system bus
1GB RAM (I think)
80GB Ultra ATA harddrive
DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive
17-inch flat display
ATI Radeon 9200 graphics, 4X AGP
High-performance digital audio
Two FireWire 400 ports
Thre USB 2.0 ports, two USB 1.1 ports
Built-in 56k modem
10/100 Base-T Ethernet
Apple Pro keyboard.. and a microsoft something mouse
System software Mac OS X 10.3.9

.. and half of that means absolutely nothing to me :blink:

HaTcH - March 12, 2006 03:00 AM (GMT)
Well we could grey out everything that doesn't really matter, and that would leave us with the guts...

Its a Mac!!! Oh Noes!!1! Hehe. Naw, I don't be hatin on the Mac, considering it is a closer relative to Unix than anything... But all the Mac experience I've had has pointed me more and more and more toward being pro-windows, or atleast, pro-not-macintosh. :P

eMac.. thats what I was first exposed to in the world of Macs.. lol.. its the thing thats like a computer-box. Monitor and all the inside stuff is built right into one neat and tidy propreitary-only case. Lol.

~EDIT: Edited first post to make the images clickable :P

K-62 - March 12, 2006 03:27 AM (GMT)
Hmm...Mac, Im planing to get a Intel Mac laptops. I dont hate Macs, but Im not a big fan either mostly 'cause they took out the floppy drive :lol: . I dont know why but I feel better if I have a floppy :P There are other reasons but I wont get into them.

Capitila - March 12, 2006 07:07 AM (GMT)
Main computer I'm on at the moment has the following -
Intel AW8-MAX mobo
3.46ghz P4
1gb DDR2 RAM
Radeon X700 256mb Video Card
Seagate 120gb hdd
Sony Dual Layer DVD burner
19" Samsung 913V LCD monitor
Logitech X-230 speakers
MS multimedia keyboard and mouse
And a black case and 500w psu, it's generally for gaming and to look sexy. Gets really hot in summer, but that's to be expected from a P4.

And in my room I've got a 500mhz presario with 320mb of RAM and not much else. Does the job for downloading stuff overnight and msn.

Aww, indeed. No need to hate macs. Ever since OSX they've been downright decent.
Plus I just *love* that silver G5-based system that came out years ago where the entire front and back panels are vents... (SO PRETTY *and* functional)

I've got a removable floppy drive for this computer.. which is nice, because it's, um.. removable!

I've actually gotten pretty used to the mac since we've had it. Yes it is an ugly white lump. But at least I can use photoshop on it! (can't get the hang of photoshop on the windows computers at school)
I'd only ever used windows, until we got the mac about a year and a half ago. The only thing I find annoying is getting used to pushing command+c instead of ctrl+c, etc. (The command button is where the alt button is on a windows keyboard, btw). I alway mix it up.

At school: *alt+v* .... *alt+v*.. Why isn't this thing pasting!!
^^;;

HaTcH - March 13, 2006 12:16 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I was so used to windows when I started using the eMacs at school for this one class, that I had trouble working out the backspace and delete changes. Also, the Alt+Tab window switcher was replaced by the clover leaf+tab function. But that happened to be the same thing. So that was cool :P

I couldn't get used to a shared menu bar and floating applications. Thats why I don't really like gimp... I like stuff to be encapsulated in its own window.

Beyond that, the last qualm I had with the mac was the way its window manager worked. In windows and in most Linux desktop environments, your window is open on your desktop and a button appears in teh task bar so you could have easy access to bring it to the front. On the mac, it took a while to get used to either 1.) clicking the icon of the program in the dock, 2.) minimizing all the other windows (and then trying to figure out what happened 3.) Cloverleaf+tab.

Otherwise, the mac is a computer, it works and gets on the internet. Its just too different for me to enjoy.

There's a version that works like that :p.

Me, I like the regular GIMP better for graphics editing, because I can break off bits of toolbars that I use often and get through it a lot faster...as much or as little as I want on the screen, where I want it. Photoshop and PSP I get sick of having to either poke around for my menu or reach for the keyboard and use shortcuts. It gets old fast.

That style's counter-intuitive to most people I talk to, but I absolutely love it. If only I could have something with Photoshop's pressure sensitivity/brushes and GIMP's interface...2.x has pressure sensitivity, but nothing like Photoshop (or Painter).

For other stuff I prefer things classic windows style. I hate poking around the start menu (even though I organized mine), so almost everything I use is right in Quick Start.

I have no clue... but I do know this,
  • It's a computer
  • It says "Compaq Presario"
  • It has a windows sticker (shiny!)
  • It runs XP
  • My dad installed a TV chip that kills it
  • It's slow
  • It's... a computer.
I'm SUCH a computer whiz, huh? B) Yeah, I know.

master666 - March 16, 2006 09:33 PM (GMT)
I need more RAM and a bigger HD:
1.8 Ghz processor
2, 20 GB hard drives
256 Mb GeForce FX 5200
400 mb SD RAM
DVD ROM drive
CD-RW
Well thats all the importants... I think.

^CR500 :D

Knick-nammed the "poo poo box", it has a lot of guts.

AMD Athlon XP 2800+
M7VIT Pro mobo
3 gigs of some random RAM
Nvidia Gigabyte 6600 (256MB) AGP X8
120 gig HDD, 55 free
PCI firewire card.
A Soundblaster card (dont know what one)
2.1 speaks... With about 450 watts for the subwoofer.
A mouse, KB and monitor
And a built-in 4-in-1 card reader.

Not that great but ok for what it is.

OH! and 11 fans.
My local PC shop had coined the phrase "The Boeing Effect" Because my comp sounds like a 757 struggling to take off.

sammich - March 19, 2006 06:42 AM (GMT)
I built my computer a while back, so it's not like cutting edge niceness. It also contains the following:

AMD Athlon 64
2.01 GHz currently running only 1 GB of RAM
200 GB of harddrive space.
uh, a purple mobo with wires and bits on it.
Um.. ATI Radeon SOMETHING graphic card. (x700)
Anger & resentment.
A shiny LCD monitor of indeterminate size. Probably 19".
shiny blue lights to amuse me by.
Windows XP SP2

O.O Why the hell do you need 11 fans? Are they all 40mm and thus really weak at lower RPMs, or is your room just naturally a sauna?

Even a decent overclock probably wouldn't need that many O.O

xXfriedenXx - March 22, 2006 10:56 PM (GMT)
My computer is a piece of crap. Anyway.

It's a HP XE783.

Dual boots Windows Me/Linux
30 GB internal
512 MB RAM
USB 2.0 and firewire
4x CD-RW drive
250 GB external drive
I think the processor is 712Mhz celeron.
17" CRT monitor.

Fear my colection of old crappy machienes.
primary machiene is a AMD athalon Xp2000+ on an A7s (s is for slow and stable) Graphis is the mighty triplex Ti 4200 64 meg overclocked to near ti4800 performances. A gig of ram, a bunch of hard disks, and a pioneer HC-116 Dvd drive (no reagon problems ever) and lite on dual layer burner finish that off.
next up is the p2 400, once known as tiny god, running a 15 % stable overclock, wiht a gig of ram, Voodoo Banshee, and aureal aonic vortex 2. This is the most awesome machiene for plyaing the origional unreal on ever, and was considered a freaking god of god macheines when i assembled it about 9 years ago. the fact that the little bastard still works is a testiment to intel, via 3DFX and asus's engineers.
