Title: Internet. Serious Business.
Description: =O

ZeRoRaVeN - March 26, 2006 03:07 AM (GMT)
Ahh yes, controversial topics! :D

Everyone loves em' cause it pits members against each other.

In any case, what are you views toward the internet? Should we take everything on it seriously?

There are indeed internet relationships and marriages between those met though the internet, but then, some see it as a complete utter joke for people to quite literaly, f**k around with is what leads to those who go around, trolling, wreaking harvoc on boards, hacking.

And then there are those who take it so seriously, they commit suicide over it.
Some Reference Topic.

So the question all goes back to this; Should we take the internet seriously?

And now, for some YTMNDs.

http://seriousinternet.ytmnd.com/ - The Internet Is Serious Business

http://wikipediasb.ytmnd.com/ - Wikipedia Agrees: The Internet is Serious Business (note: DragonForce - Fury of the storm I believe; good song)

Taking anything 100% seriously = How the duck do people *live* that way!?

If I took stuff seriously I woldn't watch Godzilla movies. Which I do. Certain things take seriousness precedence over others. I'd say the internet is about 40-60% serious business, depending on what your outlook is. I take my job as a moderator here on ZE *very* seriously, Sauropod joking aside.

ZeRoRaVeN - March 26, 2006 03:21 AM (GMT)
Well, there's some people who take just most of it seriously. Don't forget internet threats. Gotta love how they'll say they're going to come over and kill you when they don't have the slightlest idea where you live. And don't know what a IP is.

HaTcH - March 26, 2006 03:30 AM (GMT)
In actuality, finding someone by simply using thier IP is almost impossible.

I checked mine and it says that the IP is somewhere near Mount Pocono, which is some 30 miles from here, maybe more. XD

The only way someone could seriously ever find your address is if 1. you posted it on the net somewhere they could find, 2. knew your phone number (and you were listed on online phone books) 3. worked for the company who provides your internet/or could hack their database (which is probably not even connected to the internet anyway).

ZeRoRaVeN - March 26, 2006 03:42 AM (GMT)
It's fairly accurate, but the AOL users are impossible. AOL has all these proxies. You'd get their city if you're lucky. But if you go technical, you can measure the time it takes for a ping to reach them though there's lots of other variables (slow network speed, etc) that you have to take into account, but you can measure the distance though that.

Momonga - March 26, 2006 03:48 AM (GMT)
ZeRo, I'm going to kill you for making this topic. Grrr!!! :P

I think it's just the same as in real life. If you take everything seriously, it's not going to be much fun, is it? But then if you don't take anything seriously, you begin to annoy people. So yeah, I agree with Steve

</shameless plug>

Anyways, anyone who read the thread in the link should already know my opinion. I used to get my arse kicked in Gunbound...you never saw me hanging myself in my basement.

Nooo! *hides behind the intraweb* :P

That's true, but the internet isn't life. It's a special case. It's the easiest place to piss off or befriend a few hundred people. Oh sure you could do that in real life, but it sure is alot harder.

Drk-X - March 26, 2006 03:58 AM (GMT)
A bit off topic but I'd like to reference something I said in the other thread linked:

Just goes to show that the US will always be the number one country full of emos and soccer moms.

While generalizations are never 100%...you do have to admit that such cases occur quite commonly over here.

EDIT: Refresh the link for a treat from yours truly :]

xXfriedenXx - March 26, 2006 04:25 AM (GMT)
I take the internet seriously, to a certain point.

I've just gotten over a really bad internet friendship. It started out great, but the guy turned out to be a real jerk in the end.. so I think I take the net a lot less seriously anymore.

ZeRoRaVeN - March 27, 2006 01:07 AM (GMT)
That reminds me, would anybody take a internet relationship seriously? (not having met each other yet)

xXfriedenXx - March 27, 2006 01:41 AM (GMT)
No.

I used to, but, I was a stupid teenager then. XD

Not dissing teenagers.. but, hopefully, you know what I mean.

Steve - March 27, 2006 01:41 AM (GMT)
I certainly would. I'm as good as friends with Tilly and Deadborder and Rocke and The Princess as I am with my real life friends.

lol

Awesomely awesome flash by an interweb "friend".

Intertron people do not exist. That is my answer. There is no spoon, merely the perception of what you would think to be a spoon. Everyone knows that.

I'd also like to point out that this forum is home to the most cheesy and idiotic internet drama that I've ever seen. I guess that's something to be proud of. Just don't get hit by a drunk driver that posts a fake picture of a Hasbro Gilvader after argueing over the merits of two digisub groups... or that had a whole warehouse full of rare zoids burn down. Keep smiling.

I think I may go play Guild Wars and rip off tons of n00bs. Maybe one of them will commit suicide.

eh after a year n a half married when my partner n i met on line, i think thers plenty to be said in favour of internet relationships. just ignore anyone who claims to be a model, a laywer, a business man, or who claims to be able to speek japaneses, and it;s all good.

Make that like five Gilvaders and don't forget the stash of Grade-Ups and CP's for each and everyone of those Gilvys. And let's not forget the job in graphics design even though someone else had to make their siggy

Seeing such BS makes the bad things in my life go away :]

That sounds very interesting, though I'll say at least some are true.

@MrGuy XD loved it.

Ahh, the intraweb.

The_Princess - March 28, 2006 03:22 AM (GMT)
Well zero, I'd say at least 90% of people who I've met on line who climed to be sucessfull business men, laywers or supermodels have been full of poo poo. Same goes for people who claim to know japanese. The NICEST thing about the zoids fandom is it don't attract the Baka neko neko wai SUGOI!!! crowd gajin, Detsu wai?
On the other hand, i met my partner on line. and not through a dating service.

Hetman - March 28, 2006 07:39 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I've read this ages ago. It was on YTMND. Best place to search of suicides over what we usually see on the surface, stupid reasons. It was on ZGC too. Here's my message (roughly) about this on some another forum: (I think it was boredofstudies...)

"I swear, TKing is soo damn fun! Although I don't do it often, but maybe I should... maybe... maybe I'll be the cause of the next gaming suicide.. >D. And I just wish that people would stop scapegoating the gaming industy. Please, get f****d. That goes for the people who are also scapegoating the music industry as well."

And I feel soo sorry for the mother... there's my empathy. :(

The Zombie - March 28, 2006 08:56 PM (GMT)
Killing yourself over a game or whatever its about is just plain stupid...

@xXfriedenXx: Hey, it happens sometimes that you meet people online who turn out to be real jerks. That doesn't stand for all of us though.

@ZR: You forgot about the resident evil couple of the boards lol *coughmeand lycancough*

Anyways... suicide is pointless in my eyes...

xXfriedenXx - March 28, 2006 10:18 PM (GMT)
Yeah.. most people on the net are actually pretty cool, though.

The Zombie - March 28, 2006 10:21 PM (GMT)
A majority of us are lol. But there are the @$$#013$ that ruin the trust you can have for the real people. Relationships, whether in real life, or online until the couple can make arrangements to be together in person are common, and often work out, but only through pereserverance and blah blah blah...

Anyways, Tis not good to whack yourself over a game. :D

xXfriedenXx - March 28, 2006 10:39 PM (GMT)
Yeah.

Suicide, for any reason, is stupid and pointless.

I don't think I need to point out that topic not too long ago posted here about a man pretending to be a woman online.

xXfriedenXx - March 28, 2006 11:24 PM (GMT)
Sometimes when I'm bored I pretend to be a man at gaia.. but it's a role-playing site with characters anyway.. plus it's only for grins and giggles. XD I wouldn't lead anyone on like some people do.. and apparently that man did.

Yes, I am aware of that topic. However, the person himself was not a bad person, it just got out of hand. And besides, I stand for the people who aren't like that, so can it... <_<

MrGuy - March 30, 2006 01:25 AM (GMT)

JammerLea - March 30, 2006 05:49 AM (GMT)
A friend of mine who hasn't talked to me since I met him at Ohayocon. WTF. *beats him up*

Anyways...

I hate it when people take the internet too seriously, and I hate it when people don't take it seriously enough.

Computer or not, it's still REAL people. And just like REAL life there are people who lie, cheat, and scheme. There are as many people in the REAL world as online who will hurt and will hurt themselves over situations we think are completely ridiculous. And most importantly to me, there are people who I can relate to who are honest, sympathetic, witty and good people in general.

The internet is fun, but... it really isn't that different from real life in my humble opinion.
