Title: Need Help
Description: LigerType needs staff!

HaTcH - April 30, 2006 08:33 PM (GMT)
Because I doubt most people actually look at the humor topics much, I want to bring this to the table:

I'm looking for staff to help me create content for the LigerType magazine. (Basically I need writers).

No, its not going to be all pervy and crap, I want to make a fun/funny zoids based ezine, for everyone to enjoy.

Some examples of content areas I was thinking of:
-Various Zoids reviews
-Battle Reports (from your imagination, sortof how a news crew covers a nascar race or whatever...)
-Funky Tabloid-type stories/news items
-Some sort of short comic strip(s)
-Website reviews
-Actual zoids-related news
-Really anything you can wrap your imagination around.
-People with imaginations and creative writing skills
-Perhaps a second editor (we'll see about this one)
I want to shoot for a monthly release fr maybe 10 pages (png images, the same size as the cover pic)

I'd like some feedback on the idea, I don't need comitments, I'm just testing to see whether or not anyone would be interested at this point. Thanks for reading!

PlushRayseTiger - April 30, 2006 11:03 PM (GMT)
I'm all for it. The Zoids community is about to get a revival, anyway. I can do reviews of Zoids, both rambling (like on my site) and stiff and serious (but not boring and dull). Uhh... but someone else will have to take the pictures because I'm not too good at that, unless it's King Gojulas because I doubt anyone here has one B) . I can also make patterns for orgainic plush Zoids with helpful tips and whatnot.

HaTcH - May 1, 2006 12:13 AM (GMT)
That'd be cool. Like the staff members could have thier own column, like you could have the Plushie Connection or something. =]

ZeRoRaVeN - May 1, 2006 02:44 AM (GMT)
I considered something like this on my own, but I decided against it really, because I was looking for some script that would allow everyone to edit it before it was sent as a newsletter.

I probably could program something like that on my own time, but I'm really filled up in terms of programming. Gotta finish my other projects before I start.

Personally, while I think it's an intriguing idea, I don't believe it's the thing that will exactly revive the zoids community. It needs more, but this would be a good cornerstone to start though.

Momonga - May 1, 2006 05:36 AM (GMT)
I'm interested! Don't know what I could do to help, but shove stuff in my direction and I (might) get around to it xp

Sir Maverick - May 1, 2006 03:24 PM (GMT)
WAHOO!! Count me in...Not as a regular columnist, but I'll pop something in every couple of issues.

JammerLea - May 1, 2006 05:49 PM (GMT)
Assuming I can regain my sanity after graduation, then perhaps. XD If nothing else, I'd be happy to help with checking grammar and spelling. I could possibly do a comic-ish type thing, but that depends too. I'm not so great at comic strips.

Drk-X - May 1, 2006 10:54 PM (GMT)
...as long as it doesn't turn out like DT's great ZIT idea

Steve - May 1, 2006 11:06 PM (GMT)
I'll gladly submit my episode reviews. I've written episode reviews for episodes 1, 2 and 3 of CC so far, and I plan on doing one for every single episode. Just say the word and I'll try and get more reviews written and we can put 'em in your thingy.

Heres' the links to the reviews I've written. (Episodes 1 and 2 are a single review.)

Nobody commented on my review for episode 3... T_T

It would make sense to custom design a script for it HaTcH. Here’s a database structure that may be interesting. Generally, any script I make that needs some sort of member management I pull out the IPB SDK’s class and use the functions for it since it makes sense to tie in with an existing member base/management system than code your own. Which is why I made a column with FID.

Basically each newsletter would have a template number, and then each column area would have their own newsletter template number or use an existing one. If there are a lot of newsletters being sent, rather than dynamically generate each one for each newsletter sending batch it would make sense to use php to write a file than send it based on the contents of what’s in it.

You're going to need some art/graphics peoples too.

I can make fake advertisements and any other incidental graphics or mastheads.

I'll just post some concepts pertainent to this:

(And yes, I'm well aware that Zoids weren't around in the 1970's :P It was just a random thought)

(the random gibberish is just there to act as filler text, it of course can be changed, and more can be added)

HaTcH - May 9, 2006 12:49 AM (GMT)
@ ZeRo: No, don't want to do a big thing like that. Simple gorum stuff.

@ HD: I like the ideas, especially the colorful head. (Dunno about using the sprite though) I do want to keep the font though. 1 thing with the whole concept of a magazine must remain the same, and thats the title. But I could definately use a graphic designer for the cover and interior content/advertizements.

The title should also not be transparent with the back ground image. If anything, it needs to be the background, and the content revolved around that.

I have 1 more final to take then I have summer break. At that point I'd like to continue with this project.

I'm gonna set up the forums for it soon enough. At that point I'll start getting a staff together.

*chokes and dies at the fill-in text and Gunbluster mention*

*is dead*

*is still dead*

EL: *stomps on Tilly's reset button repeatedly*

Thanks, buddy. Anyway, I could do stupid stick figure comics, or something. And editproofread. And if you want someone to write that interview >_>...

The_Princess - May 9, 2006 01:00 AM (GMT)
Im in. I've got hte Z knight colum. plus whatever else i can work outl but i shdl be able to do a knight a month for at leat 18 months.

HaTcH - May 9, 2006 02:10 AM (GMT)
Awesome awesome!

I did some thinking and I want to implement this using powerpoint.

The basic idea will be, for each release, there will be presentation files, 1 per page, that will be freely editable by staff. There will be certain "holes" in the page that any staffer can fill. You save your work, and then re-upload.

Final results will be screenshots of the pages, not the presentations themselves, uploaded to the LT site.

Now you might be saying, well, what if I don't have powerpoint/cant afford power point?
The solution is the MS office replacement, Open Office. OOo has a program called Impress that is almost exactly like power point, and will even open pps files! =]

So those of you who want to be on the staff, you need to have either Power Point or OOo Impress to be able to add/edit stuff.

OOo is a large download, 100+mb, and I know that will be probably out of reach for some dialup users. I've posted in their forums asking about a smaller, Impress only installer. When they get back to me, I'll take it from there, otherwise I'd be more than happy to mail any staff member a CD with the OOo installer on it (for free of course ;)). But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Tilly - May 9, 2006 02:24 AM (GMT)
Not when it's on Bittorrent it's not! Heck, I could manage that otherwise, it'd just be a pain.

I've got an installation file for Open Office somewhere...

I miss Harvard Graphics. It was cool.

HaTcH - May 9, 2006 02:31 AM (GMT)
OOo does have torrent based distribution.. . =D Cool

Hdorriker - May 9, 2006 04:21 AM (GMT)
Wow... I *do* have powerpoint!

I didn't even realize it.. <.<

Well, super awesome. Now I can dedicate more energy to the making of graphicoidmal prettiments now that my finals are finished as well.

FOR THE AWESOME!!!

@HaTcH: I can't beleive it took me this long to figure out your sig... LOL

JammerLea - May 9, 2006 05:18 AM (GMT)
PowerPoint gives me angst. D=

But mostly because I lost one of my big PP projects for a class when my external harddrive crashed...

How LARGE are PP files themselves?

plink - May 9, 2006 08:56 AM (GMT)
Only use powerpoint if you want me to kill you. This is just gentle warning - powerpoint is nasty, notorious for crashing computers and you're going to find that few people actually have a working copy.

*blinks placidly* Wouldja look at that? I haven't been here for two years and a bit or so...and the board still remembers me.

HOWS THAT FOR LOVE?

Tilly - May 9, 2006 08:59 AM (GMT)
Hiiiiiiiiiii.

I have to say I don't care for it either, though I had a lot of fun as a kid using it to make choose-your-own adventure stories with the cheesy clipart animals. Harvard Graphics was better, but it was only on the old Windows 3.11 laptop...

JammerLea - May 9, 2006 09:06 AM (GMT)
Plink posted on Zoids Evolution. o_o

I think I just died. XD

Yeah... PowerPoint doesn't sit well with me. Though I like it a BIT more than I like Flash.

Or DO I?

Blargh.

Tilly - May 9, 2006 09:09 AM (GMT)
Make it Flash and Tilly Is Doomed.

I can save a bajillion and one image formats, but vectory stuff I'm stuck with just PSP 6. And...well, it sucks for that.

HaTcH - May 9, 2006 03:45 PM (GMT)
Well we'll see what happens.

If you don't want to use powerpoint, use OOo Impress.

And if after the first release, everyone hates the system, well think of something else.

Hdorriker - May 9, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
For the production of advertisements: I need to know what size we're dealing with here.

What are the dimensions of each 'page'?

Well, I made an ad real fast. It is 720 x 480.

user posted image

HaTcH - May 9, 2006 05:42 PM (GMT)
The page size is american standard 8.5x11". Screenshots of the pages will be in the same aspect ratio.

But the layout has locations at the bottom of some pages, along the sides, and other places for the ads. I want to limit full page adds to one or two, including one for a zoids website of the month.

*EDIT*

Just to let everyone know, I have begun work on the LT management system. Its not ready yet, but I want you all to know, that I AM doing something ;)

I'd say I'm about 75% done so far.

*EDIT*

Ok. (sorry to post like this...)

Everything is set up. All we need now are staff and ideas and stuff.

If you are interested in the project, please join the board here: http://bearcreekfire.com/zoids3d/downloads/ligertype/

I won't be around tomorrow until probably after 3:00PM, so you won't be added to the staff group until then.

Zelos - May 14, 2006 04:56 AM (GMT)
Bah, I've only had Powerpoint crash on me once, so I have no idea what you all are talking about... For school presentations it’s the best thing ever (seeing as it’s the only thing we’re able to present with on the school computers...), but way to many people in my school don’t seem to realize that you cannot read a 12pt font on a 30” TV all the way across the room, nor can you read yellow text when it’s against an even brighter yellow background, nor does a presentation look good when every slide is done in a completely different style and colors.

Powerpoint takes skill to use right! If you lack that skill, that is why it crashes so much! I don’t know just how much my 1337 Powerpoint skillz would help in a magazine if I can’t make up any actual content, however...

I have one other concern about Powerpoint...

You want the final images to be the format of 8.5x11 paper, yes?

Powerpoint isn't set up for such a orientation. o_o

HaTcH - May 14, 2006 08:38 AM (GMT)
PowerPoint will conform to any paper dimension. (not to mention, my template files are already of the correct dimension) And its not being used for a slide show. Simply a collection of things. For what we're doing, I think power point is the best choice.

And by the way, if you don't like PowerPoint, go ahead and download Open Office and use Impress.

No, it's called "an older crankier computer". I used to know how to use PowerPoint just fine and it was still a bit annoying on the old Gateway.

I really don't want to have to install more crap, either. Shinybob's already unhappy with what Bittorrent has done to my available space, and I have no use for the rest of OpenOffice. I use Wordpad for Japanese-y stuff and Rough Draft for writing.

phpBB is cool, though!

JammerLea - May 14, 2006 09:57 AM (GMT)
If I don't like PowerPoint, why would I try to download a 100MB or so program on dial up that does the exact same thing? o_o WHERE IS THE LOGIC?!? *pokes HaTcH*

I don't mind PowerPoint, it's just... the file sizes I'm worried about. What with the dial-up and all. I'm just paranoid.

HaTcH - May 14, 2006 07:40 PM (GMT)
If you use torrents, you could do it over night.

Also, Tilly, you can choose to only install the Impress files. If you dont need Draw, or Writer or the half dozen other programs, just don't install them :P

In the interim, you can still upload files to the page using the template manager. They could be JPGs or PSDs or whatever format you like.

Tilly - May 14, 2006 10:41 PM (GMT)
I still don't want to use it :p.

I know, I'll make everything xcf, beacause I LIKE GIMP'S WINDOWS ALL OVER AH HA HA HA HAAAA!

...or not. Can we all view psds here?

HaTcH - May 14, 2006 10:42 PM (GMT)
What about PSP files?

PSD works for me, though I may not have 100% compat. Save the files in an older version if possible?

Tilly - May 14, 2006 11:16 PM (GMT)
PSD opens better in GIMP than PSP unless I use weird layer blend modes...I've got Elements too, but I would think anything GIMP 1.25 would be saving would work in older versions of things.

Eww phpbb. Go use Invision Power Board.

Well how ever you want to do it is up to you. Someone else can add your files to the template. Just be sure to register on the forums and send me a PM with your requested password information for the template manager.

I'm all for PSD, if it's compatible with everything else.
I think I can do stuff with PSP's too, I'm not sure, I've never had too...

As for XCF... I have no idea what that even is. I don't use GIMP.

Right now I've got photoshop 7, but I might be able to hork CS2 from work.

PlushRayseTiger - May 19, 2006 01:18 AM (GMT)
Uh... All I can use is PSP (Paint Shop Pro, dunno about photoshop) and things like PNG. Anyone care to fill me in, here? What's PSD?
