Title: Longaberger Basket Factory

Atrophy Within - July 12, 2006 02:41 PM (GMT)
So, I just got back from my trip into Ohio. I originally went down to pick up a nice roll-top desk I had purchased from a fellow on Ebay, but on the way to his house, I saw this massive, basket, yes basket, shaped building. When I finished getting the desk, or more should I say my boy friend did since it was heavy and I like to play my girly card of being weak (:P), we desided to go check it out.

It seems there is a basket factory, that was developed a long time ago, and it was so sucessful, the money bought thousands of acres of land, it built a school, church, and complete compunity, all thanks to that basket factory. I was in total shock, so we went to the stores, which is bigger than Frankenmuth (in michigan), and went exploring.

Its a very nice place, but very expensive. they have baskets that are very beutiful, in just about any size and shape you can image. They also have a lot of other things.

While I was there I got a small stone statue of a turtle for my turtles tank, a banket (of course who couldn't go there and not get one), which is a picnick basket. Me and goofy decided we would go on one wen we got home, but yeah, it was a 4 hour drive there, then a 4 hour drive back... We never made it to the park last night as you can imagine.

Anyways, we also got a bird feeder, and I got a smal plush coyote. I was rather hoping to obtain one new wolf item, however they had not one thing in resemblance to a wolf. Meh, A Coyote will do just fine, I like those too. :)

On the way out of there, we went to the information area, to get directions back to I-75 so we could go back home, and as he asked, I went to the food stand, and got a lemonade, and low and behold, there, sitting in a basket on the counter, was two items I had not seen in a good 10, or 13 years I beleive.

Dino eggs. They are solid chocolate eggs, with a candy coated shell, and colorfull specks. They have in the center, a fruit snack type gummi dino. I think there are three types of dinos you can get, but its all a surprise. I remember getting those as a kid, my dad would buy them for me, and I would carefully eat off the candy shell, then the chocolate, then I would eat all the chocolate off the gummi, see what type of dino it was, then eat that too. I loved those things so much. Easy to say I bought both of then. I ate one already in the car on the way home, it was a pteradon in the center. I hope the second one is a t-rex, I loved that one the best. :)

Anyways, that place was pretty interesting. It was all about baskets..... Very weird.

We ate a a Frisher's big Boy (sp?) on the way back, and I got the best grilled salmon I've ever had from a non seafood place. I think before that, on the way down we had gone to a Cracker Barrel, and I had grilled trout. I bought a Mister Ed DVD there, with I think 8 episodes. I remember that show when it was on tv often. That and Dragnet, I Love Lucy, Green Acres, The Munsters, ect. I miss all those shows. I'm so glad I got Mister Ed, I watched the entire DVD on the way back.

I had rented a Pontiac Montana, but I was tired of driving, so my love took the driving back, and I sat in the backseat, with DUAL CLIMATE CONTROL! (helloe freezing AC!) and watched the DVD on the DVD player the SUV/Van thing came with. Was lots of fun.

We saw a lot of deer, although, it seems deer in Ohio are reder than those in Michigan. the ones we have are very light tan, the ones in Ohio, are rather red.

Oh, and a bird flew into the windshield. That scared me half to death.

Was a fun trip. That factory was rather interesting. I think I will be planning a trip down again, because it was rather fun. that rental car we got was very nice. I'm not a fan of Chrysler devisions, but that Pontiac.... It was very nice.

I took some pics with a disposable, so I will post them once they are developed, and scanned. :D

Long ago, people would be hired to work at a factory and you would live on site, in company houses, you were paid in company scrip, you went to the company store for supplies, and you went to the company church/hospital/everything else.

Alot of these developed into entire towns over time, the New England states are full of many such towns. Mill Towns we call them.

Now... you go to work for a factory and they rip off your leg and shove it up your nose then fire you for having a funny looking nose. It's amazing how different things are now.

I saw a discovery show about this factory not a week ago. Showed the building, the process of making baskets, that sort of thing. It was pretty cool.

About the Longaberger Factory, thing? Its weird, how a whole town, can be built, from the mere selling of baskets. Pretty amazing.

I'll probubly go back, sometime soon, but for now I'm planning for a cruise this winter. I might hold off, then i can have more time to save money to buy more baskets. They are really nice, and useful.
