I still don't know if its going to be free, or if you need to pay for service.... >.> I can't imagine they would dub it, then air it for free.... unless there are underlining plans to expose the series to english speaking countries, to late release a dubed DVD to, that they will accually make money on. Kind of pointless to dub, if they ill make no money from it.
K-62 - July 16, 2006 09:31 PM (GMT)
I cant see it being free either, it takes money to not only dub but to stream it. Maybe it will have ads in it ;)

Cartoon Network and VIZ (Nachrichten/Aktienkurs) Media announced a joint venture called Toonami Jetstream, a new broadband service that will provide on-demand, full-length streaming episodes of a number of hit anime and action series, including acclaimed hit series Naruto and Samurai Jack. In addition, users will also be able to watch full-length episodes of series like Hikaru No Go, MAR and The Prince of Tennis that are not currently offered on U.S. broadcast or basic cable television. In this joint venture, Cartoon Network and VIZ Media will jointly manage and administer acquisitions and programming.

http://ToonamiJetstream.com) will launch on July 17. Each week, new episodes will be added to the site while previous episodes will also be available through the Toonami Jetstream archive. Toonami Jetstream, an online extension of Cartoon Network's long-running and successful Toonami action-adventure television franchise,
is a free service, supported by advertising that includes both banners and streaming video ads."Cartoon Network has long been the dominant TV provider of the best anime and action," said Paul Condolora, senior vice president and general manager of Cartoon Network New Media. "And we were the first to stream, in 2001, full-length anime series online. Now, with this joint venture with VIZ Media, we will give our fans the chance to view popular shows on-demand and follow new series that cannot be seen anywhere else. We also believe this will bring new fans to the action/anime genre, create interest in new shows and build the overall popularity of Toonami on Cartoon Network."
"Toonami Jetstream will provide our current fans and new fans alike with unlimited opportunities to view our popular hit shows such as Naruto," explained John Easum, executive vice president of VIZ Media. "It will also give us the opportunity to share with our fans an unprecedented variety of Japan's newest and most exciting animated series. We are thrilled to be expanding our strong relationship with Cartoon Network. VIZ Media is one of the industry's leading licensors of Japanese animation and Cartoon Network is the preeminent broadcaster of Japanese animation and we believe that our collective forces will make Toonami Jetstream the online destination of choice for action-adventure animation fans."
Five series are currently slated for the July launch of Toonami Jetstream. Following are descriptions of the shows that will be available at launch:
-- Naruto: Twelve years prior, an evil Nine-Tailed-Fox demon that terrorized The Hidden Leaf Village was sealed inside the body of a baby in order to end the decimation of the village. A rule that forbade anyone to tell him that he possessed the spirit of the Nine-Tailed-Fox left Naruto unaware of why the villagers shunned him. Now a teenager, he attempts to earn the villagers' respect by training to become the village's top ninja. As Naruto develops his skills, he must learn to control his special powers to become the respected master ninja. Through exciting adventures, the young ninja learns the importance of friendship, teamwork, loyalty, hard work, creativity, ingenuity and right versus wrong. Naruto, created by manga artist Masahi Kishimoto, made its U.S. debut in September 2005 and is among the top-rated series on Cartoon Network.
-- Samurai Jack: Samurai Jack, which won four Emmy Awards including the Emmy for Best Animated Series in 2003, tells the story of a warrior banished to the future by an evil shape-shifting wizard. Samurai Jack encounters an amazing array of cultures and civilizations as he travels the world seeking the portal to send him back to his own time. A man of few words, Jack relies on his mental and physical training as a warrior to help him fend off the evil wizard's forces. Created by Genndy Tartakovsky at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, Ca., the influential series Samurai Jack has been lauded for its magnificent artistry, gripping action sequences, evocative score and cinematic scope.
-- Hikaru No Go: Written by Yumi Hotta and drawn by Takeshi Obata, Hikaru No Go tells the story of Hikaru Shindo, a young student who stumbles across a dusty old Go board while exploring his grandfather's attic. Trapped inside is Fujiwara-no-Sai, the ghost of an ancient Go master that enters Hikaru's consciousness, allowing him to communicate with the spirit. Sai, newly awakened, wishes for nothing more than to play Go again. Urged on by Sai, Hikaru reluctantly begins playing Go. As he begins to appreciate the complexities of the game, Hikaru makes it his quest to become the ultimate Go champion.
-- MAR: Created by Nobuyuki Anzai, MAR features Ginta, an average 14-year-old boy, until a mysterious portal suddenly transports him into the fairy tale realm he envisions in his dreams, the World of MAR. In MAR, Ginta acquires super human strength and Babbo- a talking magical weapon knows as an ARM. Together, Ginta and Babbo embark on a quest to save the World of MAR from total domination by the evil chess pieces.
-- The Prince of Tennis: The exciting backdrop of middle school tennis serves as the setting for this sports drama and coming-of-age story. The Prince of Tennis, created by Takeshi Konomi, depicts the on-and off-the-court adventures of Ryoma Echizen, who joins the Seishun Academy tennis team, known for being one of the most competitive teams in Japan. With his undeniable talent (and sometimes shamelessly cocky attitude), Ryoma is ready to lead his team to victory.
Other titles currently scheduled to be released on Toonami Jetstream include such hits as Cartoon Network's original Toonami production IGPX and VIZ Media's Megaman NT Warrior series and the all-new Zoids Genesis. Additional series will be announced in subsequent months.
Toonami is Cartoon Network's action-adventure television programming block, airing Saturdays from 7 p.m.-11 p.m. (ET, PT). Since its launch in March 1997, Toonami has introduced many successful action and anime series to U.S. audiences and become known as TV's leading destination for action-adventure programming.

Thats been noted countless times already. It probubly won't be aired for a good few months. Have they even finished the dub yet?
My bet is on it airing this fall. That gives me just enough time to buy the needed things to rip the episodes. :D I love recordable DVD players. Just run the media through the tv, then record as it plays on the player, and wala... Perfectly clear, high quality, full size episodes that can be transferred to the computer, and watched over and over.
I used to do that to copy rentals, but back then it was all VHS, now DVDs get their, much better turn.
I know there are much simpler ways of doing it, but I don't want to bother with learning a new way, when my current way is just as good. Assuming the jetstream allows for full screen viewing. Video editting is not very fun.

I have a hunch that quality will be determined by your internet connection. There will be 56k versions, 512k versions and cable versions which will probably be around MQ. I really doubt that'll stream 175-250MB for a HQ release. Its the only way to broadcast and be probably somewhat profitable without alienating those with lesser internet connections.
However, I can be wrong.
Atrophy Within - July 17, 2006 01:32 AM (GMT)
I've got virtually the highest speed you can get under $200 a month, but with the ads, I bet more than likely there will be pockets of slow play, like a CD skipping, no doubt that will suck. Meh, the quality won't be too bad at a faster connection, but as far as the highest quality one can get off those, it should be decent.
Who knows. I'll see tomarrow.

Really depends on what kind of servers they have and the daily amount of peeps around- not quite sure but I suppose it'll be better than an unmetered 100mbit server that I wanna get in the future. Then again, I'm not in the streaming business. >__>
I'm rather skeptical regarding your internet connection...

I can't wait to cry over my dial-up connection! =D
I doubt they'll have something for 56k, the whole site idea screams the death of dial-up. XD;
I need to find out when our dial-up runs out; my mom said they'd probably be upgrading then. Can't waaaaait...
Samurai Jack rocks.

I doubt it. I have circa 3,000 kbps and I stream /h/tv fine and with pretty good quality. Also important to note that /h/tv is run by ONE person and it still manages to stay up/have good quality. Jetstream should be superior in every way since it's actually funded and run by a company.
If you're internet is the best you can get (as in, better then mine which like $50 a month) then you shouldn't have to buffer at all when it's playing. If you do, you're probably on a crappy provider.

Oh thts odd, the link from the begining of the thread's different.
=.= oh this is so not cool. I spent most of my afternoon installing SP2 so I can install WMP 11 and the first thing I find is "This service is only available in the US". Now I have to go find a decent/fast/working US proxy.
Guess this also anwsers my how are they afford to do this for free question.
Mystickskye - July 17, 2006 10:33 PM (GMT)
I don't know why non-US people are so surprised at the "This service is for US residents only". In the original article it explicitly said that Viz was offering a bunch of shows including Genesis for American airing whilst another bunch of shows were being offer for global screening. What with the different rights to areas and such (different cartoon networks are run by different people in different regions) it shouldn't be a surprise at all. However, being the internet it should be fairly easy to get around some time in future. Given the popularity of some of the shows being aired along with the medium, you can bet someone will post an "easy" "how to" guide somewhere for XP users which allows them to change their IP address through their software or something like that.
And Jammer get's a cookie. Samurai Jack rocks hard xp The kind of rock you get at live concerts and jam sessions <3 I'm looking forwards to Megas XLR too. I love parodying and referencing myself, throw in giant robots and the kind of humor which is stupidly genius and you got a winner in my eyes XD

It wouldn't make sense to get that much better, rather it'll be most cost-effective to cluster a series of cheap mid-range media servers.
How I would imagine it is a network of different machines handling specific tasks. One group would be the website itself and the flash content, the other would be the media server itself primarily handling media. By separating it, it allows the specialization and optimization of each server group to the best configuration.

Uh. That's been around for many years. It's called a proxy. And it isn't limited to users of the XP system. It just involves finding an American proxy which isn't that difficult.
Jetstream doesn't seem to work too well on my computer, at the moment the selection is scarce and not to my preference so it's not a big deal.

I wasn't actually referring to the proxy though that is a viable method. A computer article I read (sometime before XP came out actually) somewhere mentioned there was a feature in XP that could easily change one's IP address or something. I didn't pay it too much heed being that I didn't have XP or a need to change my IP at the time but that's what I was referring to.
ZeRoRaVeN - July 18, 2006 02:42 AM (GMT)
Even if you could broadcast a fake nonexistant IP, then you wouldn't get any information since all the information you'd be requesting from that fake IP would go to it, and then since it's not associated with your computer you wouldn't get the info.
@K-62 I use EFF's (Electronic Frontier Foundation) TOR.
http://tor.eff.org/I only use it on occasion so I don't want to bother looking for a new proxy server each time I want to go anon. It's slow though, and really not the best choice for high-speed content.
K-62 - July 18, 2006 02:59 AM (GMT)
Thank ZeRoRaVeN, this will help.
On another note, proxys dont seem to work. It bypasses the "US only" thing, but the player cant load properly. It continuistly tells me to choose a show and when I do it just loads for a second and tells to me choose a show again :( . I guess I and any other non-US residents are going to have to wait till the Cartoon Network can see that America is not the only mass market they can acknolege as massive. ;)
HaTcH - July 18, 2006 03:34 AM (GMT)
A proxy server is probably going to look out for itself in reality. Forwarding content requested by another machine takes bandwidth, the proxy has to download the packet and then upload it to the user (who then has to re-download it, and continue to send requests in this fashion.
If that is the case, try a different proxy?
Heres something I showed kids how to do back when I was in High School to bypass the content filtering... Open up altavista, goto translate. Type in the web address to jetstream choose Chinese to English translation and go. Altavista requests the page headers, but forwards the content to you. The big CN is probably smart enough (or just has a technological advantage) to figure this out but its worth a try.
@Mystic: You can easily change your IP address--on your local area network. The external IP assigned to you by your ISP only changes when the ISP sees fit. When it gets right down to it, your computer has a couple of IPs.. first off is the loop back 127.0.0.1 aka localhost, you have your LAN address, something along the lines of 192.168.1.1 or like 10.0.1.1, and then you have your internet IP address.
I don't know much about IP cloaking, but I can't see how it would be 100% anonymous. (so don't go jacking in to the pentagon or whatever and hoping your IP spoofer will keep you safe XD)

Prince of Tennis : yawn. -_-;

So, dubbed Naruto will only be in the 'toonami jetstream' thing, which will only be in the US?
It's really great that I live in the UK. Now I know I have no chance of accidently watching that garbage for a few seconds.
I though it was bad that we didn't get Voltron and Inuyasha in the UK, but, not getting Naruto compensates for it a thousand times over.
Well, actually knowing the basic information on that show is agony itself, so I'm very happy that I'll never have to tolerate that garbage in my life.

They're pretty obnoxious, though I like Hikaru no Go in manga form, I watched a preview episode once and it was AUGH. But I think part of that was because Sai was voiced by Brad Swaile, not just the game playing factor. XD;
