Title: Editing Ahoy!
Affinity - January 3, 2008 11:57 PM (GMT)
I turned this:

Into this:

I've been using Photoshop for some time now, and since I simply hate describing my characters I simply made may Navi using X in his Command Mission armor as a template. Of course, credits go to RPG Fan for the original pic.
Questions? Comments? Assorted meats?

I say you need to link me some tutorials where I can learn that kind of editing. I just started Photoshop myself actually.
Rojiku Asashi - January 4, 2008 03:09 AM (GMT)
Tutorial? There was none. :P
Actually, this is only the... third or so time I have tried editing CGs instead of just sprites. The first was sad, the second I can't remember... but this third one here did better than I thought.
If I had a tip for new photoshopper, though, it would be to be careful not to abuse the bevel tool.

It's nice :o
Also, mandatory "NEEDS MORE LENS FLARE"
Tennet - January 4, 2008 03:17 AM (GMT)
and cow bell... aka looks good
Rojiku Asashi - January 4, 2008 03:22 AM (GMT)
Heh, personally I can't stand the Photoshop Lens Flare Filter simply because of how often it is used and how recognizable it is. If I do end up using it I modify it so it doesn't look like it. :P

That's some pretty cool recoloring/editing. I like it.
Rojiku Asashi - January 4, 2008 06:23 AM (GMT)
Thanks. I'm game to do more if anyone wants to request an edit. Just gimme an image, a description of what you want, and I'll see what I can do.
Of course, I'm not a miracle worker, but hey its a hobby and I'm bored.
Akihiko Sanada - January 4, 2008 06:26 AM (GMT)
Out of curiosity, how'd you learn how to do stuff like that? Did you self-learn it or read a tutorial or something?
Rojiku Asashi - January 4, 2008 06:30 AM (GMT)
Mostly self-learned. Criticism and suggestions from friends also helped. A touch of my perfectionism doesn't hurt either. ;)
The only Photoshop tutorials I have read thusfar was a one for a planet and one for an explosion. Also, I think a matrix-style text effect... thats about it. Nothing related to this here.
I do have to give a lot of credit to a friend of mine, Epsilon. He not only gives me lots of suggestions but he also taught me what not to do - mainly over beveling which I used to have a big problem with.
A bit of history:
I first came across Photoshop Elements 2.0. My mom had it on the family computer and I tinkered around it so much I learned pretty much everything in Elements 'cept for some of the effects. I first learned of better Photoshop versions sometime around when I was thinking about making my own Sprite-comic. I wanted a red glow for the characters' dialog but elements only did a barely editable yellow one.
Photoshop 7 was the answer. I learned me some of it's features and away I went. My first attempt at a sprite comic (yes, there have been more) failed but I decided to continue using the program. I eventually upgraded to CS2, but it ran very slow so I went back to 7.0. I hope to acquire CS3 eventually when it lowers in price and my computer gets better.
There we go. History of my Photoshopping.

Hmmm, that's pretty cool. I can only make stuff like banners, avatars, etc. I've never really tried doing recoloring or things like that. Maybe I'll give it a try someday.
Rojiku Asashi - January 4, 2008 06:40 AM (GMT)
Heh, I thought that too until I tried it. XD
Making signatures for others used to be my job on another forum. I kinda overshadowed others who did it so I decided to stop, and that forum eventually died out.
ElecNinja - January 4, 2008 07:38 AM (GMT)
So therefore we can logically conclude that you should make signatures for the rest of you EXE Warriors life. So we know that EXE Warriors won't die out.
Randomness aside. For me, the white outlines seem strange. Oh, and the eyes. For some reason it looks like he's high or dizzy.
Rojiku Asashi - January 4, 2008 08:32 AM (GMT)
The border was merely to help cover up the white pixeling left over from the wand tool. I had to take the image from the white background and I later pasted it on a black one, so it didn't look that good. It also helped cover up some, hum, bad-looking parts in regards to editing.
As for the eyes, they were really being annoying so I just left 'em that way. Its basically supposed to appear like his corneas are emitting small beams of light onto the inside of his glasses. If his glasses ever shattered (or deleted), he'd have X's regular eyes.
I thought about not adding the red eyes at all, but then he looked like a cheap Protoman rip-off.
The overall design is based on semi-good edit of regular X I saw on the internet, which changed his armor color, added a scarf, and also blackened out his face and two red glowing eyes were place in the black. Since I didn't like the blackness, I simply changed it to sunglasses on my pic but kept the red glow, though a lot less evil now.

that is some cool stuff man. I've never tried recoloring (like Feez said), but maybe I'll give it a try.
Keep it up yo. B)
Tennet - January 4, 2008 03:27 PM (GMT)
i have tried this before, I have edited a few official art if you guys want to see them PM me, i'll show you one from like 7 years ago and one of my sucky ones... i've been wanting to get good at CG, you guys might remember seeing mine but meh. i like it although his hand on our left looks a little sloppy like there is some faint black lines on it where the knuckle things were other than that i like it :D
Rojiku Asashi - January 4, 2008 08:03 PM (GMT)
The one thing Photoshop cannot even cure for me is my inability to draw hands. It's like a curse or something.
Grimm - January 4, 2008 09:02 PM (GMT)
Stupid proxy, won't let me see the picture...
