Title: Kusanagi Chronicles
Description: Novel of mine in the works...

SaitoHikari - April 4, 2008 03:27 AM (GMT)
(OOC: First of all, expect long posts. Second, to those who have read this, I'm nerfing the side-story...for now, at least. This thing's unstable, and I'll have to keep working on each chapter if necessary. So, there. Enjoy.)

1

It was another normal day of June. Somewhere along the road, a 14-year-old boy was walking towards a school. He made a sigh of relief, probably because he was near his destination…

My name is Rae Kusanagi. 14 years old. I’m not telling you my entire biography or something like that; just a brief introduction. I was born in Cosmo City. There, I lost my memories due to some accident. My parents died that day, too. I was then adopted by my childless aunt and uncle who always moves to different houses every now and then. The last palce where I stayed at was Bayser City. And now, here I am, in New State City, wondering what new things await me…

Suddenly a mysterious voice spoke to him. “Almost there, eh?”

“Yeah…” Rae replied. “Just a few more minutes…”

An angel about as tall as a finger appeared on Rae’s left shoulder.

I’m Tenkai, Rae’s guardian angel, or something along those lines. I’ve been with him since he was born, meaning I know how he lost his memory. Why don’t I tell him, you ask? It’s because I’m forbidden to. Yep, I’m not allowed to tell him. Oh, and, being an angel, I can grant him some “wishes” when certain conditions are met. I’m not allowed to say the conditions, though.

Rae looked at Tenkai. “I wish you would just change physically as time passes,” he said. “You’ve been like that since I first saw you, as far as I can remember.”

“Hey, come on, I’m immortal.”

“Then turn into a mortal.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Err…forget it.”

“Sure, sure.” Tenkai replied. He then disappeared.

After a few more seconds of walking, he reached his destination: A large high school. It was huge…really huge.

“New State High…” he said. “…so big…”

“Stop looking in awe there, kiddo,” Tenkai interrupted, suddenly appearing on Rae’s shoulder again. “What time is the first period?”

“7:00am.”

“Look at your watch, buddy,” Tenkai said with a grin. Rae did what he was told.

“DAMMIT, I’M LATE!!!” he shouted. He then ran quickly towards the building where his classroom was. He was running frantically in the halls until he reached his classroom. He went in there soon after.

“Sorry I’m late!”

“Ah,” the teacher said, surprised. “So, you’re the missing student, am I right?”

I am Mrs. Jones, 47 years old. I’m a widow. Sad, isn’t it? I lost my husband pretty soon after our marriage. Oh, he was everything to me. We had one child, a girl named Jane. Anyway, I am the adviser of Class 2-2 of New State High School. I’m expecting much from this class. I’m looking forward to a happy school year with them.

“Yes, ma’am,” Rae replied, his head bowed.

Mrs. Jones looked around the classroom. Some students were smiling, some were whispering stuff, while others did nothing. “Introduce yourself to the class first.”

“Yes, ma’am,” He went to the middle of the classroom. He took a deep breath, hoping he wouldn’t mess up.

“My name is Rae Kusanagi. I’m 14 years old. I came from Bayser City. My family moved here due to my dad’s work. It’s a pleasure meeting you all. I’m looking forward to a fruitful school year with all of you.”

He then looked at Mrs. Jones. “Is that okay?”

“Yes,” she replied. “Good introduction. Now, for your seat…” she looked at the entire classroom and pointed on a vacant seat. “You’ll sit there.”

Rae didn’t listen. He was looking at the class. “There’re 15 desks…” he thought. “…one desk for two people. For every desk, there is one boy and one girl. Looks like there’re 15 boys and 15 girls all in all, including me…meaning, there’s exactly one more vacant seat for me…” He scanned the area until he found his place.

“Mr. Kusanagi…” Mrs. Jones said, growing impatient. “Please sit down.”

Rae was surprised. “Yes, ma’am. Sorry.”

With that, he went to his seat. He glanced at his seatmate. She was a rather beautiful young girl.

He couldn’t stop staring at her.

“Hide your face while staring,” Tenkai suggested.

“Oh…right,” Rae replied, covering his face a bit to hide the fact that he was looking at his seatmate. “Damn…so beautiful…I’ve never felt this way since…since…”

Suddenly, Rae’s mind got bombarded with mysterious memories; memories he had lost. It was all so sudden. He held his head and screamed in pain.

“Hold on, Rae!” Tenkai said. “Hang in there!”

“Please…stop…it…” Rae whispered. He then took a deep breath and shouted, “STOP IT! IT HURTS!!!”

The entire class was alarmed. Some nearly panicked. While they were looking at Rae in surprise, his seatmate held his head. Rae stopped screaming. He looked at her. Their eyes met. Rae felt so…strange. But then the pain went back.

“AAARGH!!!” he screamed. “STOP IT, STOP IT!!!”

Mrs. Jones went to Rae and helped him up. Rae then stopped screaming, but the pain was still there.

“You don’t look so well, young man,” she said. “To the infirmary you go.”

“Yes…ma’am,” Rae replied weakly. He knew he couldn’t shout in front of the teacher, and his resistance made the pain worse. He then removed himself from his seatmate and started going out of the classroom. It was obvious that he’d collapse before he even got close to the infirmary, so Mrs. Jones called for Rae’s seatmate.

“Sora Hikari…” she said.

“Yes, ma’am?” the student replied.

The name’s Sora Hikari. I have a sister from another class of the same year, Sara. I once had a friend, a boy, but somehow we were separated when a fire occurred in our village. My parents said he died. What else should I say…looks like that’s it.

Mrs. Jones went to her and whispered something, which she replied with a nod. “OK!” She then went to Rae and put her arm around his shoulders, giving him support. With that, they went outside.

“Now…” Mrs. Jones said to the class. “Let us continue with our lesson.”

Meanwhile, on the way to the infirmary, Rae’s pain suddenly stopped. He looked at Sora, saying, “I’m all right now.”

“We need to be sure,” she replied.

“At least let me walk on my own.”

“Okay, then.”

After a few more minutes, they reached their destination. The first person they saw was a female doctor. The doctor adjusted her glasses as she looked at Rae. “You’re the new kid? What’s wrong?”

The name’s Sheila Goldworth. I’m a doctor at New State High. It has always been my dream to help the sick. Also…there’s something else…

“It’s nothing, really,” Rae replied. “…it’s just a sudden headache.”

“Just give him a check-up, I guess…” Sora said.

Ms. Goldworth looked at Rae’s body. “You seem fine. But sure, come.”

“I’ll be waiting outside, then,” Sora said. “Come see me once you’re done. I was told to skip first period because of you.”

“Sorry about that,” Rae scratched his head.

Sora smiled. “Nah, I was pretty much not interested with the lesson, anyway.”

“See ya later.”

“Sure.”

With that, Sora went out. She went to the quadrangle and sat on a bench. The sun was bright, but not too much. There were no people around, and there were doves near.

“I sure hope it won’t take long. Wonder what happened to him…?”

After a few minutes in the infirmary, Rae’s check-up had ended.

“You seem fine,” Ms. Goldworth said. “In fact, you’re more than healthy. Do you know what caused your sudden headache?”

Rae bowed his head. “I…have a theory, but I’m not yet sure…”

“So this isn’t the first time?”

“Actually, this is the first.”

“Would you mind telling me what that theory of yours is?”

“I…can’t. Not right now. I need to make sure.”

Ms. Goldworth sighed. “Oh, well. Can’t be helped, I guess. Just be careful. If the cause is psychological, only you can do something about it. Remember that. Oh, and having friends is a good idea, too. You can start with Sora. She’s a good kid.”

“I understand,” Rae faced the door. “Thank you very much.”

Rae began looking for Sora. It didn’t take long, though, since the quadrangle was close to the infirmary. He saw her, and he was startled. She looked beautiful as the rays of the sun pointed at her while she was staring at the doves nearby. His heart started beating fast, and it alarmed him.

“No…” he thought to himself. “Not another attack, please…”

“Oh no…!” Tenkai thought. “If he gets another attack, he might just…!”

It was really hard for Rae to endure the pain inside of him. He started feeling weak, and his heart was beating abnormally.

“Oh, they went away…” Sora said as the doves flew towards the endless sky.

She heard Rae’s groaning and saw him.

“Oh, hi, Rae. How long have you been there?”

The pain inside of Rae suddenly stopped. He wanted to think about what happened, but he first thought of what to say to Sora.

“I just came.”

“Oh, good. Did you see those doves?”

“Yeah.”

“Aren’t they pretty?”

“I guess so.”

“Hey…” Sora stood up. “Come here.”

“Eh?” Rae thought as Sora went closer to him. She then took his hand and led him to the bench.

“Come on, sit here,” she said as she sat down.

“Ah, sure,” Rae replied as he also sat down. “How many more minutes before the next class?”

“35 more minutes,” she said. Suddenly, she thought of something. “Hey, would you like to go around the school with me?”

“Eh?”

“Come on, I’ll show you around.”

“Uh, sure.” Rae stood up.

They walked together for a bit. Soon, they reached the cafeteria.

“This is the canteen,” Sora said, acting like a tourist guide. “This is where we students eat.”

“Um…don’t say the obvious?” Rae looked around.

“Oh, sure.” Sora then went to the people who serve the food. “What’s for lunch today?”

“Fried chicken,” one of the sellers replied. “Oh, and there’s pork and hotdog, too.”

“Thanks,” Sora then went to Rae. “The people here are nice, aren’t they?”

“Uh…yeah…” Rae replied.

“Alrighty!” Sora took Rae’s hand.

“H-hey!”

“Off to another place!”

They went to all sorts of places; the gym, the quad again, the retail store, the other buildings, and many others. After all those, Sora led Rae to a place hidden behind the school. It had a big tree at the center of it.

“This has been my secret hideout since I first came here,” she said. “I always come here when I’m alone.”

“So, no one else knows that you go here?”

“Yeah.”

“Then why’d you tell me?” Rae suddenly grinned.

“Oh, no…” Sora gasped. “It’s supposed to be my secret!”

“Well, not anymore.” Rae laughed.

“Yeah, it’s not a secret anymore.” Sora sighed.

“What are you talking about?”

“Eh?”

“You don’t get it, do you?” Rae let the cool wind blow at his face. He went and touched the tree’s big trunk. “This hiding place of yours…is not your secret anymore; it’s our secret.”

Sora giggled slightly. “Yeah, I guess. Thanks a lot.”

“For what?”

“Nah, it’s nothing. Come on, let’s get going.”

Their last stop was the library. Sora went to a cabinet where there were tons of books.

“I really love to read, you know,” she said, browsing the books.

Suddenly, a group of students came. One of them was surprised to see Rae and Sora.

“Hey, Sora!” she called. “Why aren’t you in your next class?”

Hi there. I’m Sara Hikari, Sora’s older sister. I’m in Class 2-1. Sora skipped grades, so she was able to be in the same batch as me. I’m pretty different from my sister; our voices, interests, and many others. Speaking of Sora’s friend, I did know him, but not much. The boy was pretty shy towards everyone except her…

“Oh, I almost forgot…!” Sora gasped. “No worries; we won’t get scolded much for being late.”

“I wouldn’t miss a second to learn if I were you, though…” another student from class 2-1 said.

My name is Tina Madison. People call me intelligent and all, but I’m just doing what’s supposed to be done, that’s all. I’m almost always busy, but I make sure I give appropriate time for my friends.

“We better get going, Sora,” Rae said, walking towards the door.

Sora nodded in agreement. “Let’s hurry.”

They quickly ran towards the next classroom, with Sora taking the lead, since Rae pretty much didn’t know where the next class will be held. They soon arrived, and everyone was surprised.

“Sorry we’re late!” Rae exclaimed, panting. The two of them then went to their seats.

Its nice that you have an Aside everytime a new character is introduced, instead of just leaving us there to wait for character development. Can't wait for next chapter.

Here goes chapter 2...

2

Classes continued for the students. It seemed like it would drag on for eternity, and it can be seen that some students were bored, if not tired. During History class, Rae was getting sleepy. He yawned as the teacher was talking.

“No sleeping, Rae,” Tenkai said. “The teacher might see you.”

“But Tenkai…” Rae yawned. “I just can’t stand it anymore. You know how rough yesterday was…after having moved to my new house, my mom and dad made me do most of the work in moving our things, since my dad was tired from his usual whole-day work and since my mom was, well, not suited for physical labor. I really need some rest here…”

“I can tell, Rae…” Tenkai replied, suddenly becoming serious. “By the natural course of events, you will be able to get enough rest to get going till the end of the day. Of course, only the ‘Head Honcho’ knows how much rest that would be.”

Rae fell asleep. Then the teacher started writing some words in the black board to the left. Rae was sitting near the middle column, somewhere at the back, and everyone stretched their heads to see clearly what was written, in such a way that they all covered Rae’s face, making the fact that he was sleeping unknown to the teacher.

Tenkai here. That, my friends, is the power that he can use. By telling me his desire; or rather, just by desiring it badly, I can use the powers of the ‘Head Honcho’ to give it to him. However, the conditions are: he must want it sincerely, and it must not spoil him.

In this case, Rae was really tired. I can understand how he feels, since I’m always with him. Yesterday, he was overworked beyond imagination, and I, too, believe that he deserves a rest. However, he will wake up soon by the natural course of events, planned by the ‘Head Honcho’ Himself.

Rae’s time to wake up didn’t take very long. It took about 5 minutes before he was caught.

“Student #14, Kusanagi,” the teacher suddenly said, pointing her long stick at him. “DON’T YOU DARE SLEEP IN MY CLASS!!!”

Rae suddenly returned to reality with a huge shock. He fell from his chair, which made the class laugh. After apologizing, he took his seat.

“I’m bored,” he whispered softly.

He took his bag, got a notebook, put it on his desk, and opened it. He then took his pen from his pocket and started writing on a blank page of the notebook.

“Today was pretty fun. I befriended this girl, Sora, and I got to know some students from the other class. I was late for Math, but who cares? Right now, History is making me sleepy, so I thought I’d start writing random stuff. Hope the teacher doesn’t notice me. Hehe…

I was staring at Sora during the first period (Fine, I find her cute and all) when she triggered those vague flashbacks of mine: Me going with this girl when I was little to the mountains, me and her talking there, the two of us going home, then that vague memory of how my parents died and how I lost my memory. Those flashbacks gave me a headache all of a sudden. But wait…how did I lose my memories in the first place? Will I get them back? I wonder…

Yo, Tenkai. You’re reading this, aren’t you?”

“Couldn’t help it, buddy.”

“…whatever. Anyway, maybe I’ll just write about Sora to kill some time. She’s cute and all, and has a childish voice. She and her sister are really different. First, there’s the appearance; her sis looks way more mature than her. Then there’s the voice; again, her sister’s voice sounds more mature. I can guess their personalities a bit; her sis would be more mature than her and all. Duh. Oh wait…why did Class 2-1 go to the library? I thought only 1st years had library periods…? I guess it’s probably because the teacher was gone and they plan to be all nerdy and study. Oh, look at the time…”

“That’s all for today, class.” The teacher said. “Dismissed.”

It was lunch time, and everyone started walking to the cafeteria; well, everyone except for Rae. He stood by the stairs, looking at everyone excited to eat. A smile crept on his face.

“Watching innocent people doing their usual stuff is fun, eh?” Tenkai asked.

“I guess so,” Rae replied. He closed his eyes and bowed down slightly. “Seeing their innocent and sincere smiles can really make my day.”

“Oh,” Tenkai said in a calm manner. “Watch out.”

Suddenly, Rae’s eyes were covered by two hands. He could feel the chin of the person on his left shoulder. “Guess who?”

“Try changing your voice, Sora,” Rae replied. “It’s way too obvious.”

Sora took her hands off Rae’s eyes and went beside him. “Wanna eat lunch with me?”

Rae scratched his head. “Uh, sure.”

They walked together and soon arrived at the cafeteria. They got themselves a vacant table fit for 4 people at most. Sora then took her lunchbox and Rae went to buy some food. Rae went in line, and waited, when the person behind started to talk to him.

“Hey,” the person said. “I don’t have a place to eat. Could I go sit with you?”

The name’s Michael Cromwell. Hmm, let’s see…my fave subjects are Math, Chemistry, and Physics…well, I dunno what to say much. Call me the silent type. I'm not really good at introductions.

“The name’s Michael,” he added. “Pleased to meet you-”

Rae wasn’t listening. Several people had finished buying their food, and he had moved forward while Michael was talking. The current gap was 5 feet. Michael didn’t say anything and moved forward, too.

“I’m Michael,” he repeated. “Let’s be friends.”

“Uh, sure” Rae replied. It was his turn at the counter, and he paid for his meal. He went to his seat, and Michael followed after paying for his food.

“Oh, Michael,” Sora said as soon as Michael sat down. “Where’s Tina?”

“Oh, her class will be here anytime.”

Surely, they did come after a few moments. Tina spotted them and, as if by reflex, separated herself from her classmates and sat with Rae, Sora and Michael.

“Hello Sora,” she said with a friendly smile. “And you’re…?”

“His name’s Rae,” Sora replied. “Rae Kusanagi. The new student. He came from Bayser City.”

“Oh,” Rae scratched his head. “You listened to my introduction, eh?”

“Of course,” she replied. “I’m actually pretty interested in you.”

Michael noticed that a long conversation would start if this continued on, so he intervened. “Let’s eat now.”

Tina took her lunchbox and her pack of chocolate milk. They then started eating. They ate silently, and it took them quite some time to finish. But once they were done…

“Hey Sora,” Rae suddenly grabbed her hand. “What time is it? ...Hmm, 42 minutes left. Let’s go somewhere.”

“Oh,” Tina said, putting her lunchbox in her bag. “I’m sorry, but I have something to do. You know, school stuff. Hehe, sorry. It was fun meeting you, Rae.”

“Same here.”

Tina left. And soon, a group of girls passed by the table.

“Hey Sora,” one of them said. “Come with us for a bit.”

“Oh, sure,” Sora gladly replied. She stood up and faced Rae and Michael. “Sorry, you two. I have to go. See you guys later.”

With that, Sora also left. Rae and Michael didn’t say anything to each other for a while; they just sat there, looking at the table. Then Rae stood up and, with a smile, motioned Michael to come with him. They then left the cafeteria.

After a few minutes of silently walking around the school, Rae spotted a place with grass and trees. He went there and lied down on the grass. Michael followed and sat down.

“Hey Michael,” Rae started the conversation. “Why was Sora asking where Tina was?”

“You already know the answer,” Michael replied. “Asking me isn’t necessary.”

Hmm, the two of us are pretty much similar and we both know it…Interesting.” Rae smiled. “She your girlfriend?”

“…somewhere along those lines…”

“I thought so…”

“Hey,” Michael suddenly said. “Could you make a detailed introduction to me? You know, so I can get to know you better.”

“I guess that would kill some time…” Rae replied. He closed his eyes for a bit, took a deep breath, and looked out into the sky. “Rae Kusanagi. 14 years old. I’m pretty distant with my relationships. It’s most likely because I’ve been moving from city to city due to my dad’s work. Making friends at one city, then losing them when I move, then make other friends and lose them all again…it’s like a never-ending cycle of pain. When I was in Bayser City, I thought that, maybe if I didn’t make any friends, the pain would lessen, since I was bound to move to another place anyway. But then I realized I couldn’t do it. Never had the saying ‘No man is an island’ made so much sense to me. I realized that it would be better to make the most of my time. But by the time I came to that realization, I was moving here, to New State City. So I’m hoping some people here would be kind enough to be my friends…”

“Hmm…I see…”

“Let me talk about something else,” Rae continued. “Let’s see…I lost my memories when I was pretty young, and so I can’t tell you about my childhood memories…”

“Tell me about your family, then.”

“I’m an only child…and an orphan at that.”

“Your parents were killed?”

“Yeah,” Rae replied, reminiscing his awful past. “I lost my memory that day. I remember when I got up from a bed in the hospital; my childless uncle and aunt were there, but I didn’t know them. I didn’t even know who I was. Everything was so shocking. I began a new life…without my real parents. My foster parents even lied to me, saying they were my parents at first, but it wasn’t that hard to notice; they were lacking something…something that I could only feel in my real parents. And so, in time, they admitted it; that my parents were dead. Back then, they said they found me unconscious in the village where I grew up. They were supposed to pay us a visit that day, and the timing was really convenient. If they hadn’t come, I wouldn’t have had a direction in life. I’d stare at my parents’ dead bodies and wonder, ‘What’s this? Who am I? What am I? Why am I here?’ and stuff. My head would be full of questions, and no one would be there to answer them. I’d go crazy and I might have killed myself without even knowing it. I guess I owe my foster parents my life…Well, that took up some time. What time is it, by the way?”

“15 more minutes…”

“Let’s get going then,”

“Sure.”

After that, they had straight classes till the end. To Rae, it felt like forever just waiting for the last class to end. But at last…

“Class dismissed.”

Everyone ran outside the school. Rae was standing by the gate, appreciating
the people around him yet again. Then he saw a group of girls walk outside. Sora followed a few moments after, but Rae stopped her for a bit.

“Hey, Sora…” he said.

“Yes?” she asked, stopping. However, Rae noticed that she slowed down even before he stopped her, making him think that she was gonna speak to him regardless of whether he would stop her or not. It made him feel sort of funny inside.

He waved his hand a bit. “Bye.”

“Oh, bye,” Sora smiled. She then continued walking.

Rae continued to look at her as she walked home with her friends. Suddenly, right before he could lose sight of her, she looked back at him and waved her hand. He smiled and waved back. Only when he lost sight of her did he decide to go home. He went to the opposite path that Sora took, and saw Tina walking by herself. He started running a bit to catch up to her.

“Hey!” he called out. “Tina, you walk from home to school?”

Rae caught up, and they started walking together. “Yes. You too?”

“Ain’t it obvious?” Rae smile

“Yeah, I guess so,” Tina said. “Well, how was your first day?”

“I had fun," Rae replied as they stopped by the pedestrian lane. “I got to meet you guys.”

“That’s good.”

“Oh, by the way…”

“Hmm?”

“Michael’s your boyfriend?” Rae asked with a grin.

“Oh, him?,” Tina laughed. “You’ll understand soon enough about me and that guy.”

After a few minutes of walking, they soon arrived at Rae’s place. They stopped by the door.

“Well,” he said. “I guess this is it. Take care on your way home.”

“I’ll be going then,” Tina replied. “Bye.”

“Bye,”

When Tina left, Rae went inside. He entered without knocking, shouting “I’m home!”, but no one answered.

“Oh,” he thought. “They’re not here yet, I see.”

He went to his room and lay down on his bed, leaning on his arms. He stared at the ceiling for quite a long time…like, 15 minutes. The last thought in his mind was:

“My stay here in New State City will be filled with fun and strange things…I can feel it in my bones.”

Can you put me and Pikaman in your fanfic?

...uh, get real. This thing can't have navis in it. This is a story about a boy with a finger-sized angel with him as he lives his life as a high school student. He meets new people, and falls in love with one of them. And all those random stuff.

Btw, if ever I continue on with this during vacation, expect fillers and stuff.

@Tennet: I can't post em all right now. I removed something in the story, and it affects 4 straight chapters, so I need to put in something new now.

Tennet - April 6, 2008 02:30 AM (GMT)
ahh ok i might eventually read the originals but i don't knwo...

SaitoHikari - April 6, 2008 04:42 PM (GMT)
I still haven't gotten over with nerfing that something in this fic. I have to start over again from chapter 4, so it'll probably take me quite some time to finish it. Anyways, here's chapter 3:

3

After a week of classes, it was the students’ first weekend for the school year. In the Hikari residence, Sora, Sara, and their parents were up early for what seemed to be a family outing.

“I’m so excited,” Sara told Sora. “At last, after one whole week of school, I get to have some exercise again!”

“Haha,” Sora laughed as she put a bottle of water in her bag. “Nothing beats weekends, I guess.”

After getting ready, they headed towards the gym. It was a really huge place.

It was in this gym that there was quite a commotion going on, in the tennis courts…

“Hey,” a familiar boy said to a group of tennis players. “Let me play.” There was an arrogant and semi-cocky tone in his voice when he said that.

“Listen here, brat,” a player replied, mocking the boy. “The contest to determine the participants of the New State Open is coming soon. A kid like you has no right to interfere, you know. Just go home and play with a damn wall or something.”

This seemed to anger the boy. He lowered his head a bit as he said, “Listen here. I walked for 2 straight hours just to get here, and I’m not going home unless I get to play a match.”

It was when the aforementioned player wanted to start a fight that a varsity player suddenly arrived. He was a seemingly strong player. And upon his arrival, everyone became silent.

“What’s the matter, kid?” he asked the boy. “You want to have a match?”

“Yes…and a decent one, if you may.”

“Mind if I take you on? A 5-set match.”

“I don’t really mind. Sure.”

The players were surprised at this. “Come on; don’t waste your time on a brat like this. He probably can’t even last one set!”

The boy looked with sharp eyes at the player. “One set? I can do a hundred games straight.”

“Well then,” the player said with a kind tone in an effort to avoid any fights. “Let’s just get on the court, ok?”

“Sure,” the boy replied as they went to their positions with the other players watching them, believing with confidence that the boy would undoubtedly lose in the match.

Inside the gym, the Hikari family except Sora started getting ready to play. Mr. Hikari played basketball with his acquaintances while Sara and Mrs. Hikari played badminton with each other. Sora doesn’t play any sports, so she just watched them.

“I’m no good at sports…” she often says to herself. “…and I always will be. Oh well.”

She soon got tired of watching her family play, so she went outside and walked around. There was a small store nearby, so she went there. She bought some biscuits and ate them near the exit. By the way, the tennis courts were beside the store. Sora decided to take a look there for fun.

In the tennis courts, she saw the boy; he was wearing a wristband on his right hand, and holding a red racket. He was in his standby position, eyes fixed on the ball that was on his opponent’s hand, and with a big grin. It can be seen that his opponent was tired, since he was gasping for air.

“Isn’t that…” Sora thought in surprise. She closed her mouth in shock as she continued her sentence. “…Rae?!”

“Hey,” Rae said. “Tired already? I can’t believe this.”

“You’ve got great stamina, kid,” his opponent said as he tossed the ball, hitting it with all his might.

Rae’s sighed. He caught the ball with ease and hit it weakly.

While the ball was approaching Rae’s opponent, Tenkai suddenly appeared on Rae’s shoulder.

“Yo, buddy,” he said. “You’re friend’s here.”

“Who?”

“The girl who showed you around the school on your first day.”

“Oh, her,” Rae thought. “I guess I’ll end this now.”

His opponent was able to return the ball. Rae started running at an incredible speed. When the ball was a few centimetres near the net on his side of the court, he jumped and performed a smash.

“Game won by Kusanagi! 5-0!” the referee exclaimed.

Sora was watching in awe, and she was more amazed when she heard other players talking.

“This kid is unbelievable!” one of them exclaimed. “This is his third set against one of the varsity players and he hasn’t even lost a single game!”

“He’s gonna end this in straight love sets…” another said. “…this can’t be real…”
Sora looked at Rae. He was sweating, but he didn’t look tired at all.

Rae tossed the ball. “Here we go…” he hit it with great force. His enemy couldn’t return it.

“15-0!” the referee exclaimed.

“Hehe…” Rae looked at his sweating opponent. “Time to get serious.”

He tossed the ball. “30-0…” he declared as he hit it with greater force than his previous shots. His opponent didn’t even see it coming.

“…!” the referee himself was surprised. He soon regained his senses and declared,

“30-0!”

Rae then performed the same serve.

“40-0! Match point!”

“Here we go…” Rae took off his wristband and threw it. “Please don’t take it; it’s precious to me.”

The wristband landed on the ground with a loud thump, with a wrist weight coming out from inside of it, which meant that Rae had been playing with a wrist weight on without anyone knowing. Everyone in the court was shocked.

“He had a wrist weight on?!” some exclaimed.

Rae made a huge grin as he held the ball. “You’re older than me by about a decade, but you’re 1,000 years too early to beat me.”

“Hey buddy,” Tenkai said while Rae was dribbling the ball. “Why is it that you always go all-out during the match point?”

“It’s simple,” Rae tossed the ball. “Do I really need to explain?” He hit the ball with incredible force. “If he can’t keep up with me with weights on, I’ll continue playing that way. If he can…” The ball bounced on the opponent’s court with great speed. “I’d go all out without showing any mercy.” The referee declared Rae’s victory. Rae walked towards his wristband and weight and picked it up. He smiled a bit as he wore it again. “But I’d still like to play with and without the wrist weights and such even for a few turns.”

Rae left the court. As he approached his bag, Sora went to him.

“I never knew you would come here,” she said. “And you were good! Really good!”

“Oh, thanks,” Rae replied as he put his racket on his bag. He got a towel and wiped his sweat. “So, why are you here? Playing basketball?” He grinned a bit.

Sora was a little insulted by that, but she knew that Rae didn’t mean anything bad about it; he was just teasing her. “My family’s playing at the gym.”

“I see…you don’t play?”

“I don’t.”

“Well, that’s understandable…” Rae said as he carried his bag. “Although it would be good if the entire family is able to play their own sport. But then again, if you were busy playing, you wouldn’t have found me.”

“I guess so.”

Rae looked at the tennis players a bit. He felt disappointed. “You swing it the wrong way. Your form; it’s bad. Pay attention to the ball,” were some of the things that he wanted to tell them, but somehow he knew it would be pointless. So he started walking to the gym. “Let’s go to your family.”

Sora followed. They walked without saying a word. Even then, Sora still couldn’t believe that Rae was so good at tennis. “Maybe he spent his whole life playing and mastering tennis?” she started to wonder. But before she could think more, they were already inside the gym. They first saw Mr. Hikari playing basketball, and the ball went out of bounds, going towards Rae. He caught it, as if by reflex, and did a shot from there. It went in without touching the ring.

“Woah…” they all said in unison. Mr. Hikari saw Sora with him, so he asked “Are you a classmate of-”

Rae had already walked off, leaving Sora behind in awe. She noticed her father, and so she approached him for a while.

“He’s a classmate of mine,” she said. “His name’s Rae Kusanagi. He’s an expert tennis player.”

“Oh,” Mr. Hikari said, somewhat surprised. “I see. Well, I’ll be playing now.”

Sora left and went after Rae. She saw him sitting on a bench, beside her bag, watching Sara and Mrs. Hikari play badminton. Rae noticed her immediately and smiled.

“You want something to drink?” he asked with that innocent-looking smile of his.

Sora sat beside him. She looked at her bag and saw that the bottle she put a while ago was empty. “Dad must’ve used it all up!” she thought. She then closed the bag. “I am pretty thirsty, but no thanks. I’ll just-”

Rae had already left. Sora sighed as she waited for him. She started watching her sister and mother play. It didn’t take long for Rae to come back. He sat down again, holding two cans of soda.

“You want one?” he asked, offering a can.

“I thought I said I didn’t want one?” Sora asked, somehow irritated that Rae did not listen to her.

“Well then,” Rae suddenly made a mischievous grin. “If you don’t want it, fine; I’ll throw it in the dumpster. Wait a sec, okay?”

Rae was about to stand up when Sora, more irritated at his actions, stopped him.

“Oh, all right,” she said, taking the can of soda as Rae sat down again. She opened it and took a sip. “This is good! Thanks. How much is it? I’ll pay you back.”

“Haha,” Rae laughed as he looked at the ceiling while moving his legs back and forth.

“It’s on me; no need to pay me back.”

Rae and Sora just finished drinking when Sara came and sat down. She was gasping for air and was sweating heavily.

“Mom,” she said. “Your smashes really make me tired, you know that?”

“Sorry for going all-out,” Mrs. Hikari smiled. “Who’ll be my opponent now?”

Rae’s face lit up. He smiled and raised his hand. “I will! Can I? Please? I’m bored as hell, and you look like a pretty good player to me.”

“Hey, Rae,” Sara said. “Don’t take her too lightly. Mom has the strongest smashes and the best endurance among badminton players here.”

“No sweat,” Rae replied as he stood up and started doing some warm-ups. “Oh, and can I borrow your racket, Sara? I came here to play tennis, so I didn’t bring mine along.”

“Sure,” Sara lent Rae her racket. “Now, go to the court. I’ll be scoring this match. The first to score 21 points wins. You know the drill. Let’s do it.”

The two went to their places. Mrs. Hikari was in standby position while Rae was standing straight and playing with the racket by swinging it in random directions.

“You forgot something, Sara,” he suddenly said. “Who serves first?”

“Oh, right,” Sara replied, irritated that she forgot. “Go, mom.”

“Here we go,” Mrs. Hikari said as she got ready to serve.

Rae went into standby position with a grin – the same grin that he’s been making during the day. “This’ll be fun. Now for some warm-ups…”

Mrs. Hikari started the serve. Rae hit it weakly upwards, and Mrs. Hikari immediately performed a powerful smash.

“She’s planning on ending it soon,” Sara told Sora. “Mom usually never does a smash that powerful after the first return of her opponent.”

Rae immediately caught the shuttlecock and hit it upwards again, giving Mrs. Hikari a chance to make another smash, and she does so. Rae caught it with ease again and hit it upward. He kept doing so until Mrs. Hikari got tired.

“What is this kid?” she wondered as she gasped for air. “My smashes seem to be nothing for him! I’m getting tired right now…”

Mrs. Hikari made a normal shot upwards. Rae smiled as he performed a smash more powerful than hers. She didn’t even see it coming.

“0-1!” Sara declared, surprised herself. “Rae leads!”

Mrs. Hikari served again.

“Hey Sora,” Sara suddenly faced her sister. “What was Rae doing here in the first place?”

“You wouldn’t believe this…” Sora replied. “…but he just defeated one of the tennis club’s varsity players in straight sets!”

“He what?!”

“Hey, Sara!” Rae suddenly intervened. “My point!”

“Oh, sorry,” Sara replied, still pretty shocked. “0-2!”

…and the game dragged on until…

“20-0!” Sara declared. “One more point and Rae wins!”

Rae held back on purpose for about half a minute, then he made an upward shot and turned his back, hiding the mischievous grin on his face. Sora and Sara wondered what was going on in his mind, but Mrs. Hikari thought of this as a chance to score a point. She performed a smash with all her strength, thinking that Rae would not be able to return it.

However, Rae moved his racket in such a way that it would catch the shuttlecock and send it to Mrs. Hikari’s side of the court, near the net, still facing away. He faced back and got ready. “I win.”

Mrs. Hikari panicked all of a sudden, but managed to catch the shuttlecock, hitting it upwards. By that time, Rae was waiting near the net. He made a triumphant smile as he performed a smash.

“21-0,” Sara declared, still in awe. “Rae wins…”

Mrs. Hikari fell on her knees due to fatigue. Rae went to her and helped her up. He offered his hand and she took it. As they both got up, Rae scratched his head.

“You were good,” he said. “Thanks for playing with me. It was fun, really.”

Mrs. Hikari was about to say, “That’s not true; I was way out of your league.” when they all heard Mr. Hikari calling them, telling them that it’s time to go home.

With that, Rae went to Sara and returned her racket. Then Mrs. Hikari and her daughters went and took they’re bags. After saying goodbye to Rae, they left.

However, only when Rae lost sight of them did he decide to go home himself. He got his bag and started walking towards the exit.

“It’s gonna be a long walk,” he told Tenkai. “Let’s get going now.”

The Hikari family was riding on their car as they went home. Sora looked outside the window without putting her head out, telling herself, “Rae is really intriguing. I really wanna know more about him.”

Also, as Rae walked home, he looked at the sky, asking himself, “What should I eat for lunch...?”

Rae reached his house at approximately 1:30 in the afternoon. It had been a rough day, and the first thing he thought as he entered was, “I’m hungry.”

In order to satisfy his raging stomach, he went to the kitchen and took some chicken from the refrigerator. He’s not eating it raw, of course, so he started making preparations to cook it.

He finished preparing everything, but before he could start off making lunch, he remembered about his clothes. “I forgot to change, dammit.” He went to his room, changed clothes fairly quickly, and went back to the kitchen, 100% sure that he had nothing more to take care of. He looked at the chicken yet again.

Maybe I’ll just fry it,” he thought.

With that, he started frying the chicken. Everything was going smoothly until he heard someone knock at his door.

He couldn’t leave his precious lunch, so he called out to whoever was knocking, “The door’s unlocked. Come in.”

He heard the door open, but he didn’t bother to look at who entered. “If it’s some random burglar, I’m seriously gonna kill him...” Whether he was serious or not, nobody knows. He noticed that his dog was barking, signifying that the people definitely weren’t his parents.

Rae here. That’s my dog, Rooney. He’s some big German Shepherd whom I bought using the money I won at a tennis competition back in Bayser City. I got him when he was only 2 months old, and he’s a year and 3 months old now. He’s a really great pet to have, except for random times when he rushes at me and licks me while I enter the house. For that reason, I have him tied up in the backyard.

He’s a really friendly dog to everyone, once he gets used to the faces of strangers. Back in Bayser City, I didn’t have to worry about leaving with him on the loose, since everyone in the place are friends with him. But now that I’ve transferred houses, I’ll have to keep him within the boundaries of the house until he can get accustomed to the people here. As for those people who just knocked…

He turned around and saw a couple with a girl about his age. It’s…a family of three people.

“My, my,” the mother said with a smile. “Cooking your own food? What a responsible child.”

“I’ve been doing this for years,” Rae replied, his eyes focused on his food. “It’s nothing, really.”

The father looked around the house for a bit. “Your parents are not around?”

Rae turned the stove off… “My dad’s away on some random business trip of sorts…” …removed the frying pan from the stove, “…and my mom had to go somewhere. She said it had something to do with her job.” …and placed the fried chicken on a bowl which he had prepared a while ago. “That’s basically it.”

While Rae was going to the dining table and getting ready to eat, the father asked, “Is it okay for us to sit down for a while?”

“Oops,” Rae replied. “I forgot to offer the seats.”

The mother merely smiled at Rae. “It’s okay, it’s okay.” The family then sat on the sofa.

Rae thought, “Eating lunch while there are visitors around is just not right…even though I am pretty hungry,” so he left his food for a while and sat on a separate sofa to talk with the visitors. “So, uh…new neighbors?”

“Why, yes,” the mother replied. “My name is Martha, my husband right here is Harry, and this is my daughter, Rachel.”

The girl sure is cute…Pleased to meet you. I’m Rae Kusanagi and I study in Class 2-2 of New State High School. How about you, Rachel?”

Rachel was a bit surprised when Rae suddenly asked her, but she soon got a hold of herself. “I study in New State Middle School, and I’m graduating this year.”

Rae crossed his arms. “I see...so I’ll bet you’re 13.”

“Y-yes…”

“Birthday?”

“It has already passed,” Rachel replied. “I had it last May.”

Rae smiled. “Then I’m older by a year and a few months, since mine is on January. If you’re confused about the age stuff, I skipped a grade, that’s why.”

“Then you must be very intelligent, eh?” Harry complimented.

Rae smiled and scratched his head. “Well, uh, it’s nothing really.”

“Say,” Martha suddenly said. “Me and my husband have to go somewhere soon, so we’ll take our leave now, if you don’t mind”

“Oh,” Rae smiled. “That’s okay. I still need to finish up my lunch.”

“How about we have Rachel show you around after you finish your lunch and all?” Harry asked all of a sudden.

Rae smiled upon hearing the offer. “I’d love to. If it’s okay with Rachel, that is.”

“I don’t mind.”

“Then, okay,” Rae replied.

“Well then,” Harry said as they all stood up and got ready to leave. “Bye now.”

“Bye.”

Unlike what Rae does with Sora, he didn’t bother looking at them leave the place and, rather, closed the door immediately after they passed through it and ate his lunch.

Upon finishing his meal, he went straight to his room and lay down on his bed, staring at the ceiling. It was at this time that Tenkai appeared yet again to interrupt him.

“You’re not going?” Tenkai asked. “I think she looks cute. She might even be able to trigger some random headaches once you get a good look at her…who knows.”

Rae was pretty irritated, and it could be seen written all over his face. “Shut up. I’ll go there when I feel like it.”

“Who knows, maybe she’s waiting,” Tenkai grinned. “It’s pretty rude to make a girl wait, and you know that.”

“You’re not even sure that she’s actually waiting.”

“But you should treat stuff like these as if the worst-case scenario is happening…”

“…and do the right thing. I’m sick of you always telling me that.”

Tenkai flew a bit and stopped right in front of Rae who was still lying down. “You really should get going now, you know.”

Rae sighed as he rose up. “Fine, fine…”

Rae left the house with a bored look on his face. After all, he is bored. He walked with his head leaning on his arms. He just walked around, not caring about anything else. Well, that is until he remembered something vital.

“I…forgot to ask where their house is.”

Tenkai appeared and sat on his left shoulder all of a sudden. “They’re your neighbors, right? They’re probably within 3 houses away.”

“I’ve passed 6 houses to the right already…” Rae sighed. “That’d mean they’re place is to the left of my house. Dammit, I wasted my time.”

“Don’t blame me; you’re the irresponsible one…not to mention stupid enough to forget that they’re your neighbors.”

“Shut up, willya?”

Rae went back the other way, looking at the houses to see if Rachel was around somewhere. Soon enough, he saw her…outside the door of her house that was right beside his house.

Rae slapped his face. “Talk about wasting my time…”

Rachel went and met up with Rae. She seemed to have changed her clothes, and she looked really pretty. “I’ve been waiting.”

Rae scratched his head and smiled. “Well, uh, sorry…I kinda, you know…got lost…in a sense.”

Rachel merely giggled. “You’re funny. I like you.”

Rae was pretty surprised at what Rachel just said. His heart raced for a while. “No way. This can’t be…but it is. She said ‘like’, right? No, mustn’t take this seriously…she probably said that on a whim or maybe she meant it in some friendly way. But still…damn.

“Yo,” Tenkai said with a mischievous grin, patting Rae’s shoulders while at it. “She likes you, handsome.”

“Will you just shut up?” Rae whispered angrily. He, too, made a grin all of a sudden. “You’re ruining the mood here.

“Is something wrong?” Rachel suddenly asked, interrupting Rae and Tenkai. “Why don’t we head off now?”

“Uh, right,” Rae replied, slightly embarrassed. “Let’s get going. I could’ve sworn she was pretty shy when her family was at my house…why the sudden change of attitude?

The two of them (along with Tenkai) walked together around the neighborhood, with Rachel telling Rae the family that lives in each house that they pass by, telling him the surnames, and some personal comments on the family. Rae, for the most part, didn’t pay attention; he merely looked around, his thoughts a complete blank, so to say.

Rachel pointed at the last house, the one in the right of the Kusanagi residence. “This is the last stop. This one’s the home of the~”

“Damn, all this walking is making me hungry,” said Rae as he looked at a nearby store. It was obvious that he wasn’t paying attention at that time.

Rachel stopped and smiled at Rae, who was looking the other way. “It was fun walking with you. Too bad it ends here. And too bad you don’t seem to care.

“Yo, buddy,” Tenkai whispered. “She’s staring at you.”

Rae momentarily forgot his hunger. “She’s looking at me? No way! SAY WHAT?!” he whispered, careful not to make Rachel think that he was some kid who still believes in imaginary friends or something.

“So, uh…” Rachel said as she started going, disappointed that Rae didn’t think much of her efforts. “…I’ll be going now.”

This alarmed Rae all of a sudden. “Now?! Wait, it’s only been half an hour or so! Uh, wait…err…”

“Yes?”

Rae scratched his head in embarrassment. “Uh…I’m sorry for not paying too much attention to you a while ago. You know…around this place.”

“Oh,” Rachel merely smiled. “It’s okay.”

Rachel was already walking away, and Rae stopped her all of a sudden. “Uh…wait…!”

Rachel turned around, surprised. “Uh, yes?”

“Listen,” Rae scratched his head. “Are you…busy or something?”

“Well, not really…” her heart suddenly started beating faster.

“Uh…there’s a park, right? Could you, err, go with me there for a while, maybe?”

Rachel was hiding her blushing face. “Uh…sure. I don’t mind.”

They walked together towards the park. Rachel was really nervous; it was written all over her face.

Mustn’t make such a big deal over this…” Rae thought. “I’m just bored…and she’s just accompanying me to the park…

Upon reaching the park, the two of them sat by a bench, each of them on the ends.

“This isn’t some romance story, okay?” Rae said with a smile. “It won’t be like, we both move slightly towards the center, then be all lovey-dovey once we get close enough…hey, why am I even thinking about such a thing?!”

Rachel ran out of words to say. She became all flustered out, until a young boy who had been playing with some other kids went to her and sat beside her all of a sudden.

“Why’re you here, sis?” he asked.

“Well, I was just accompanying him. He’s new here.”

The boy took a good look at Rae. “Oh? I’m Matthew. Nice to meetcha.”

“Rae Kusanagi,” Rae replied with a smile. “Same here.”

“Well, I’ll be leaving now,” Matthew abruptly said just when Rae was about to ask him a series of questions like “How old are you?” and stuff. “My friends and I are gonna go somewhere. There won’t be anyone around. Will you still be staying here?”

Rae smiled. “Oh, I will. Take care.”

Sooner or later, while Rae and Rachel were sitting on the bench doing nothing, Matthew and his friends went away.

The atmosphere was getting intense, and Rachel was beginning to feel uneasy being alone with Rae. Rae, on the other hand, made a sigh of relief as he stood up and went to the playground in a corner of the park not far away from the bench where he and Rachel have been sitting on. He then sat on a swing and stared at the sand below him.

Rachel watched Rae as he simply stared at the sand. “What is he doing?” Finally tired of waiting, she sat on an adjacent seat on the swing. “What’s the matter?”

Rae’s face suddenly became somewhat serious. “…No one’s around here and no one’s gonna come here for quite a while, am I right?”

“Well, if I remember correctly, Matthew and his friends are going straight home after their little outing. Why?”

“…Let’s play.”

“What?!”

Rae smiled. “Come on, let’s go to the seesaw. Please?”

They played on the slide, seesaw, swing, and the monkey bars. Soon after, they even played tag. They spent one whole hour on the playground, both having fun acting like little kids. However, Rachel soon got tired, thus putting their playtime session to a halt. They both sat on the bench, this time close to each other.

Rae smiled, although his smile couldn’t be seen because he had his face bowed. “Thanks a lot for wasting time with me. I mean it.”

“No problem,” Rachel replied. “I had fun, too, somewhat.”

“Listen,” Rae stood up. “Maybe we should go now. That okay? Or still need some rest?”

“No, I’m fine now.”

“If you say so…”

With that, they both walked home. After saying goodbye to each other, they went to their respective houses, with Rae going to the kitchen once again to make some snacks. He then heard Rooney barking from outside.

“Oh,” Rae smiled. “Sorry, sorry. I’m coming.”

Rae took some dog food, put it in Rooney’s personal plate, and gave it to him. Rooney wagged his tail as he happily ate.

“Good boy,” Rae said as he patted Rooney’s head. “Wait a bit; water’s coming.”

He went to the kitchen and put some water on Rooney’s personal water dish and put it beside Rooney’s food.

“Alrighty,” he said with a smile, his fists at his waist. “Now to get me some snacks.”
He took some chips from the pantry, went to the living room, and started watching some TV as he ate. He was watching…a tennis tournament being broadcast live from some random country.

After he finished watching and eating, it was already nighttime. He went to the kitchen to prepare some dinner.

“This time, it’s a whole bunch of fried rice,” he said as he got the ingredients from the fridge. “After this, I’m gonna hit the sack.”

He cooked, he ate, he brushed his teeth, he took at bath, he went to his room, and he lay down on his bed. It had been a long day, and Rae was really tired.

“It seems like it had been a long time since I met Sora at the gym, don’t you think?” he told Tenkai, who had just appeared at his shoulder.

“I guess it really has been a long day,” Tenkai replied as he made a sigh of relief. “You deserve some rest.”

Rae looked at the ceiling. “Mom and Dad are still not around…but what the heck. Good thing I can take care of myself while they’re out doing their jobs.”

“Now go to sleep,” Tenkai said, disappearing for the day.

“Right,” Rae smiled a bit as he closed his eyes. “Good night.”

Nope.

I'd love to say from me, but that would be too egoistic of me. But I have a pretty good idea that's from me. The Kusanagi, however... forgot. Maybe from Naruto [Orochimaru's Sword of Kusanagi... Sasuke has it, even]

Yeah, thanks for comments. Glad you guys liked 'em. For Chapter 5, I've got a couple of notes:
1. Pretty stupid, and this one's for Tennet: I did not base the new character's name on you, 'kay?
2. The bullies really don't have any names, since they're extremely minor characters.

So, yeah, enjoy seeing Sadistic-mode Rae Kusanagi...and forgive his rants at the beginning; he just hates his parents, that's all.

Weekends have ended, which means Rae must endure the boredom of school. He needs to wake up at 5am so that he could arrive at school on time or earlier. It was 15 minutes before 5, and Rae was having a dream…

“Yeah, yeah…here goes my dunk smash…BAM!”

…when his mother knocked at the door loudly and entered a second after. She then went to the sleeping Rae and…woke him up.

“Wake up, Rae!” she exclaimed. “You gotta go to school! You mustn’t be late! Wake up!”

That’s my ever-energetic mom…err, foster mom. She loves making noises during the day. Every single day, she barges in to my room and says mumbo jumbo stuff about how I should get up early and all that crap. Then she keeps on shouting. She’s always too noisy to hear me say that I’m awake. She really gets on my nerves sometimes.

Rae was too weak to say, “Gimme some time; I’m already awake,” clearly for his mom to hear. After 20 more repetitions of telling him to wake up and other stuff, she went out of the door, telling him to get up…again…in a loud voice, closing the door, and knocking twice before telling him to get up…again.

This is a habit of hers that I really hate; how she repeats everything over and over again as if I need to be told a hundred thousand times before I could fully comprehend whatever it is she’s saying. And those two knocks before she goes away; it irritates me so much that I’m tempted to continue sleeping. I dunno why; it’s been a habit of mine for such a long time, since I always sleep in every single day of my life.

“Dammit,” he told himself. “You could’ve spared me at least 10 more seconds so that I could get that championship trophy, but no…you just had to come and ruin it all without even giving me a chance to say anything.”

The irritated Rae was tempted to sleep yet again.

Alarm clocks don’t work on me, so my parents do it their way…which is very unfortunate for me. They could just shake me a bit and tell me to wake up, then leave the rest to me…but what the heck.

Rae finally got up after a lot of resistance and forcing. Upon finishing preparations for going to school, he went there as soon as possible, since he was going to be late.

On the other hand, Rae had already accepted the fact that he would be late, so he ran fast but didn’t worry about anything. “If I try my hardest and still end up late, it’s really okay. It’s not like my life depends on it or anything.

And he did arrive late, but the teacher didn’t seem to care much, so he simply went to his seat, which was beside Sora, and started listening to the current lesson.

“Hey Sora,” he said, tapping Sora’s arm slightly. “You gonna eat lunch with us today?”

“Sorry,” Sora replied. “Really sorry, but I promised the girls that I’d go with them for the entire lunch period. I hope you don’t mind.”

Rae smiled. “Not at all, Sora…not at all.”

Lunch time came soon enough, and Rae ate with Michael and Tina, with Sora eating with the others. After eating, they went their separate ways, with Tina and Michael walking together somewhere and Rae going to a building alone for no particular reason.

He was in the 2nd floor of the building when he saw a classmate of his leaning on a wall, looking at the ceiling.

“Yo, Kev,” he said as he went to the guy, Kevin. “…what on earth are you doing in a place like this?”

Kevin shifted his eyes on Rae, who was right beside him. “How about you? Why’re you here?”

“Nothing much,” Rae replied. “Just doing some exercise and stuff. Walking is good for your health, you know.”

“Yeah, whatever,” was the only thing Kevin thought of saying. “Anyway, how about we go to the gym for a bit?”

“I don’t really mind.”

With that, they both left the building and went to the gym. Upon arrival, Kevin went to the basketball court and took a ball. He then threw it towards Rae, who caught it with ease.

“How about we play for a bit?” he asked. “You said you wanted exercise, right? We can exercise right here.”

Rae didn’t say anything. After a few seconds of silence, he threw the ball towards Kevin as he walked away, waving his hands with his back turned and all.

“No thanks,” he said as he went closer to the exit. “I never really had any interest in basketball.”

Kevin didn’t mind Rae, thinking that he wouldn’t change his mind no matter what. He’s probably that kind of person; one whose decisions are more or less absolute no matter what.

Rae continued his aimless walking, this time on another building. As he went to the 2nd floor, he noticed something going on. As he looked to his right, he noticed 3 big guys who seem to be bullying a…classmate of his.

Larry Martin. The guy’s a nerd, for one thing. He’s got those round glasses and all, and he’s pretty much not the sociable-type. He loves his books, and he’s always seen reading in a corner. I hate nerds. But…I hate bullies more. They think they’re strong just because they’re big? What a bunch of crap.

He approached them casually, as if he was just a passer-by. Upon inspection of the area by merely using his eyes without moving the head, he noticed that there was no one else around. “He really goes to isolated places, eh?” he thought. As he got closer to them, he heard them talk for a while.

“You bumped us on purpose!” one of them shouted. That was probably the lame reason why those guys are picking a fight with a helpless bookworm.

Making their own interpretation of what happened…” Rae thought as he continued walking. He was about 3 yards away from them now. “…the reason for bullying some helpless runt…just for the sake of showing off their stupid strength…those guys are the lowest. Larry probably bumped them by accident because he was reading a book while walking down this hall.

“I’m telling you,” Larry said. There was a Biology book on the floor near his foot. “I was merely not looking. I was probably too preoccupied with this book that I’m reading that I never noticed that you guys were passing by!”

Rae grinned. “I thought so…I am such a genius.” He was now around a yard away…and the bullies don’t even seem to notice him.

“Who the hell cares?!” another said…loudly. “You’re gonna pay for what you just did, accident or not, right here and now!”

Rae passed by them, a smile creeping on his face.

They finally noticed him. “Hey, kid! What’re you doing here?!”

Before they could even have the chance to turn their heads towards Rae who was now behind them a bit, Rae suddenly hit one of them at the back of the neck with a karate-chop-like attack.

“I never studied karate,” he said calmly with a grin. “But my chop can be lethal, you know.”

The bully who was hit fell on the ground. He struggled to stand up, but he was momentarily unable to do so. The other two turned to look at Rae. They were about to punch him, but Rae had already stepped back a few feet away. Larry took this chance to escape.

Rae’s eyes looked fierce as he had them focused on his opponents. “Muscle-heads really are slow, eh?”

“Don’t you dare underestimate us!” One of them said angrily. “An attack from behind is also unfair, you know!”

Rae laughed a bit. “I was able to pull it off because you guys were too slow to notice me passing by.”

“Why, you~!” the guy couldn’t take it anymore; he was really mad now. He charged towards Rae, ready to throw a fierce punch at him.

When he was close enough, he punched him…not. Right in front of him was a smiling Rae who deflected his punch using one hand without showing any effort.

Rae raised his head and looked at Bully #1 in the eye. “…you’re not good enough for me.” Using his free hand, he punched Bully #1 square on the stomach, making him lose his balance and fall on the floor. Rae bowed his head and grinned again. “Heh…the other one was able to sneak in behind me, eh?

Bully #2 charged at Rae; he was gonna tackle him. When he was close enough, Rae side-stepped out of the way in no time, went behind him, and kicked him, causing him to fall on the floor, too.

Bully #3, who was now able to move, still with some minor aches at the back of his neck though, charged at Rae, his palms wide open in order to push Rae toward the wall and injuring him in the process.

Rae simply responded by reaching out his hands, too. Soon, their fingers interlocked each other, with Bully #3 using up all his strength and Rae acting defensively while keeping his grin.

“Damn you…” Bully #3 tried to move Rae’s hand, but he was unable to no matter how hard he tried. “…is this guy still human?!

“Sorry,” Rae said, his grip on each hand tightening. “Playing mercy with me is fatal, you know.” He tightened his grip on Bully #3’s hands more to the point that he just cracked his opponent’s bones a bit. He then twisted Bully #3’s wrists and kicked him, sending him falling to the ground with his comrades.

The deed done, Rae turned his back on them and looked at his watch. “10 more minutes,” he said to himself. “I still have some time to spare, I guess.” He waved his hand with his back facing away, the same way he did with Kevin a while ago. “See ya, losers.”

Rae was getting away, and the bullies didn’t like it one bit. They stood up and walked slowly towards him; they were too weak to move normally, after all.

When they were a few feet apart, they surrounded Rae fairly quickly, ready to beat him up for all that he has done to them so far.

Rae clenched his fists, ready to take them on. “You sure you guys wanna do this? I won’t be held responsible, ok? I’ll let you have a taste of my famous Kusanagi Punch.”

The bullies didn’t say anything. Instead, they all attacked at once.

20 seconds later, Rae was walking down the stairs, leaving the 3 bullies, severely injured, each with a pair of black-eyes, behind.

Rae went to his class, not worrying about those muscle-heads whether they were able to go to their class or something. He simply sat on his chair, listening to the teacher whenever he felt like it and sleeping whenever he felt bored; just his usual stuff.

After hours of boring lectures, dismissal time came. Rae started walking home, but was interrupted when he was about to reach the gate.

Rae heard a familiar voice…a really familiar voice. “That’s him, Mrs. Birman! That’s the guy who started a fight with us and made the halls in Building #2’s second floor a real mess!”

Rae didn’t move, but his eyes, which were hidden from the general public showed some signs anger. “What the hell? I left the place without even touching the wall!...hmm…maybe…that explains it. They messed up the halls and are now planning on placing the blame on me, eh? Clever, but lame.

Rae turned towards the people with a normal face. Right in front of him were the 3 bullies, with the bruises and all, along with Mrs. Birman, a 3rd-year teacher. “What’s wrong here?” he asked casually, putting up quite a great act. “…Oh, my, what happened to you three? You looked like you just got beaten to a pulp!”

“Don’t play dumb with us!” one of them exclaimed. “You did this to us and you know it!”

Rae smiled. “Tsk tsk tsk…if you guys were planning on placing the blame on someone innocent like me, then you must be pretty dumb, eh? Come on, look at me; there’s absolutely no trace of injury anywhere in my body.”

Mrs. Birman made a thinking gesture. “I can see what you mean,” She then turned to the bullies. “You three are really gonna get it this time…even blaming a freshman for what he never did; you guys are the lowest!”

Rae left without saying a word, his smile hidden from everyone else. “This is what you get for picking on someone,” he told himself as he walked home.

~END OF CHAPTER 5~

Woot please comment. I'd really appreciate it. And, yeah, criticisms, as long as it's constructive, are welcome here.

Initially, I made the bully-fighting scene much worse: Rae headbutts one of the guys and the guy's head ends up bleeding, he fractures bully #2's arm, and he nearly kicks bully #3 out of the window...but then that'd make the main character a bad guy, so I changed it.

Chappy 6 is coming...I dunno, once I feel like actually making it. 7 and 8 will follow soon after.

Yes, yes I am. :D

I am enjoying this, though it would be best if Saito would add something more of a heavy drama [not sappy], you know, a serious chapter to balance things out?

Meh. sorry, but not now. The entire thing (no matter how long it is) is still an intro. Maybe chapter 7 would have something...?
