Description: -about musicians-

it's proven, that if you play an instrument over time, you'll have a better short-term mermory (well..memory in general) and you have better problem solving skillz O_o
sara13987 - December 7, 2005 01:11 AM (GMT)
You do realize that's completely wrong, for me, anyways, right? I've been playing piano for... at least 6 years, and clarinet for 4. My short term memory hasn't gotten any better since ever.
alana136 - December 7, 2005 02:06 AM (GMT)
I agree with Sara....i've played the Alto. Sax. for 4 years and i cnat remeber what ihad for breakfest ^_^
Rylo - December 7, 2005 02:19 AM (GMT)
I've not heard that, but I have heard that students who are good at Math end up being good at instruments as well... it uses the same part of your brain, or something.
And, short term memory? I've been playing trumpet for four years, and I have great short term memory. Well, I have great memory in general anyway.

Not true. I am (not trying to brag but) very skilled at guitar and im just starting. Math...is another sad, sad story.
So its not true...for me. XD
sara13987 - December 7, 2005 07:53 PM (GMT)
Does it really matter? Music is basically meshing Math and English; being able to read and comprehend everything you see quickly, and being able to understand fractions and such.
My short-term memory is half decent if I can transfer some of the information to long term memory. Otherwise, I'm screwed. Ask Alana; I can't walk and talk at the same time because my memory screws up.
Kaden - December 7, 2005 09:46 PM (GMT)
I think it might be true for me 'cause I'm actually getting an A in german. <_< My grades have slowly gotten worse as I've played instruments though. In 3rd grade when I started playing guitar I got my first B. When I started playing F. Horn I got a B in math and science. Then this year when I started Bass and trumpet I just... can't concentrate.
In most classes I can remember stuff, but for some reason if I don't take notes I completely forget it, and if I do it takes about 10 weeks to forget stuff.
vashies - December 8, 2005 12:03 AM (GMT)
ok so the paper i got in the mail lied to me when they gave me my region band music ;)
and O_o wtf are y'all smokein! when i got to 6th grade i sucked at school, then i started Trumpet and now my math, english, french, science and us hist wnet up (pritty much every class)
sara13987 - December 8, 2005 01:30 AM (GMT)
If I'm the valedictorian for my grade, I doubt I'm smoking anything, thank you. -_-
Kaden, when you get older, it's pretty likely that your grades slip. Harder work.
Also, if your grades were bad, it's more likely they'll go up than down. There's only so many marks you can lose, right?
But... Most of the people in my band who are good do have good marks. It seems to be a correlation of sorts. If it's that music makes people smarter, or, smarter people tend to play instruments... We'll never know.
SilverGale - December 8, 2005 12:35 PM (GMT)
I have no idea either, but I find that studying while listening to music that I like helps me.

Yeah, I know, that's because I've always been a procrastinator (SP?) so with big projects I usually wait till the last day...
And on the bad grades thing... It's true.
vashies - December 8, 2005 09:41 PM (GMT)
...lme to, i always wait but i still get good grades in IPC and French (both = 9th grade classes[if they count]) but i'm in 8t

How is it in any way related to English?
Rylo - December 9, 2005 01:14 PM (GMT)
Because you have to comprehend what you read in an instant- similar to books, in a way.

You spelled it right.
Anyway, I am too. I'm trying to get better about it though <_< Not quite succeeding. Maybe that's another common trait among musicians, you think?
Only... I actually get good grades on those last minute projects 0_0

I do that and I still manage to get 85s and 90s.

I waited 'till 1 in the morning to do my Math Project on tesselations, the day before it was due, and got 50/50. I don't listen to music either. :P
Rylo - December 10, 2005 01:41 PM (GMT)
I procrastinate... on everything, and I'm the top of my class 0_0
SpiralStatic - December 10, 2005 04:14 PM (GMT)
I procrastinate on everything, to the point at which I end up not doing it. But when I do do something, I usually get an A on it, no matter how long I wait. I'm just starting Guitar, and it seems I have a natural knack for it, and I'm good at math. Hmm... I wonder.
Kojiro - December 10, 2005 04:52 PM (GMT)
My Guitar instructor said that people who are usually good at math are usually good at instruments.
LoZfan03 - December 12, 2005 01:53 PM (GMT)
I'm good at both and so are several of my friends (including NintendoGeran)
EDIT - by both I meant math and music, but I'm a pretty good procrastinator too
masterlance - December 14, 2005 01:53 PM (GMT)
I've been playing brass instrument, mainly trumpet, for about 3 and a half years now. I'm one at the top of my class, but I can't remeber anything worthwhile. I can even forget a thought before I think it. Don't ask, it's very complicated and not a good feeling.
Danzar - December 14, 2005 10:24 PM (GMT)
i procrastinate all the time. and on a musical note, it would be cool to be good at piano, i just dont feel like putting effort into something. /lazy
