Title: Which is more important?

I unno, I've just been thinking... Which, to you, seems more important: physical or mental/emotional well-being?

I'll voice my opinions later.

You know everybody, but the e-thugs, will say being mentally/emotionally weak is worse.

That's my opinion too. :P

Arcan - July 3, 2006 01:21 AM (GMT)
I find myself agreeing with Alex-at any extreme.
I'd rather know everything in the universe/be at perfect peace with myself then be some kind of Superman. On the other end of the spectrum, I rather be completley paralyzed than brain-fried or in a constant state of horrific depression.

While they're all important and should be a balanced mix, the emotional/mental part of the human psyche is more important, personally. Everyone does things because of the following: id, ego, and super ego.

1) The id controls your desires and wants. What you want to do. I believe it's subconscious however.

2) The ego keeps you connected to the here-and-now (reality); or what you can do.

3) The super ego is what you should do. This is the guilt side of your human psyche.

I forget how the spectrum went (I wish I had my notes; maybe Kurai could help if she sees this).

Without mind, we'd all be walking morons (sorry).

(Gah, my thought boat just sank... I'll continue this later. >_<)

I have no idea what an "e-thug" is, but as someone who attends a steroetypically "jock" school, it's really a hard choice between these two. Emotional well-being is immensely important, of course, but so is, I think, physical fitness. In fact, I think that to some extent they're tied to one another. (Your brain actually shrinks during depression. I'm sure that's why I can't do math anymore. :P)

Much as we all want to transcend our physical bodies and become creatures of pure thought and emotion and fluffiness, we have to face reality, and the fact that like it or not, we're grounded in these sacks of bone, flesh, and little thready things. So we might as well make them athletic sacks of bone, flesh, and little thready things. :P

Maybe I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I dunno, my brain's really not functioning that great right now. Logic's not its top priority. ^_^ I'll probably be more coherent tomorrow.

Well, yeah. I've always viewed emotional/mental well-being as being more important. Mostly because, well, if you're really upset, it can take a toll on your physical self, as well. If you're mentally unwell, then you could continuously keep getting sick.

Put bluntly, mental/emotional well-being influences physical well-being more than the opposite.

Valter - July 4, 2006 08:08 PM (GMT)
Emotional. I don't want to be crazy.

Esgalglinion - July 6, 2006 05:49 PM (GMT)
Emotional well-being is way more important. You can train up your body to handle stuff, but it's way more difficult to heal up depressions and stuff.

grondring - July 7, 2006 02:46 PM (GMT)
... =hands Esgal some Zoloft= :P

Esgalglinion - July 7, 2006 04:59 PM (GMT)
What the hell is THAT?! :o

What the hell is THAT?! :o

Zoloft = Medication for depression... Other words, anti-depressant.

Esgalglinion - July 7, 2006 08:46 PM (GMT)
Bah, that stuff never helped my mom.

Lades - July 7, 2006 09:06 PM (GMT)
Emotional.

As for the Zoloft thing, Give them Codine or Vicoden instead. It's funnier to use and to watch! :D

Very interesting topic, Ms. Sara.

You see, I don't think there's a real answer to this question. Assume we are speaking of health.

If one is not physically healthy, as in, they are disabled or significantly ill, etc, they will have trouble performing the necessary daily tasks to sustain their life and live comfortably. They might even need assistance to perform such tasks. Overall, this will more than likely lead them to enjoy their life less. It might also affect them mentally due to their lack of independance and the fact thier quality of life might be a lot lower than those of other people, or at least they might think it is. This brings us to the next point...

It might be easier to argue that mental and emotional health is the more important aspect of one's life due to the fact that hapiness is an emotion, and therefore it is more important to retain one's mental well being, for without it, one is lost regardless of their physical condition.

I, however, argue that since physical problems place significant stress upon the mind and would cause daily problems they are equally as important as mental problems.

Black Valor - July 8, 2006 02:54 AM (GMT)
There isn't any total one or the other answer to this question, because physical affects the mental, and vice versa.

It needs to have a balance of both physical and mental wellness, because otherwise you find yourself on a sinking ship, either from depression or physical illness.

BV out...
