Title: Alternative Uses
KuraiKitsune - August 14, 2006 10:55 PM (GMT)
Strange, but relevant title. Now, let's see, how to start...
Well, no use beating around the bush. I've got a roach infestation in my house. >.>'' But, through this blight, I've found that I've discovered quite the strange bug killer that comes in the form of one thing: Lysol.
Strange, isn't it?
After spraying the hell out of a roach with Raid and finding that it did absolutely nothing but stink up the kitchen, I angrily swept up the spray bottle of Lysol: Antibacterial Kitchen Cleaner (not sure if the type makes a difference) and shot the sucker. Strangely, after only one shot, the little arthropod had quite the violent seizure before dying about five seconds later. It made me quite happy, to say the least.
I've tried Clorox, Bam! (Ooh, don't use that. x.x Stinks up the room something fierce and doesn't work at all... even after I used half the bottle and almost passed out from the fumes, the little buggers still run as if they were untouched), Raid, and alcohol, but to no avail; it turns out that Lysol works the best. ^_^
Has anyone else found any household items that can be used for more than one task... or, more specifically, one that it wasn't intended to do? :o

When we're out of Clorox I tend to use Windex, which for some reason we never seem to be out of, for everything except bleaching. It seems to work relatively well.

Don't even get me started... XD. I'm Dominican. See, we have one window with a broken support beam, so it won't stay open. One day, my Dad broke a pole off the banister as he went down the stairs. So, now we have a replacement support beam for the window to stay open. And that's just the start of it... but I'll spare you. And honestly, the best roach killer is a slipper or sandal... preferrably snappy plastic slippers. As a New Yorker/Dominican, I have plenty of experience with roaches.
Valter - August 14, 2006 11:05 PM (GMT)
Nope. Everything I use for what it's supposed to use for.

I don't wear slippers inside the house. :o I do find that bare feet work pretty well, though. ^_^ Of course, they do stick with their guts... and they can jump off your feet if you didn't kill 'em properly... but hey. Just wash off the bottoms of your feet and go on with life. ^^''
Lysol's got longer range, and can reach places that slippers can't... though holding a slipper and slapping the suckers does help. *Nods*

Oh, yeah. We also use the regular Lysol floor cleaner/disinfectant to make baths for our dogs. It gets rid of fleas and other nasty bugs, and actually helps heal wounds quicker. It also kills athlete's foot. My dad had that. ^_^

Wow. My parents just put anti roach pads in some places (garage, bathrooms) and they work fine. I have not seen a roach for a while in the house.
I Have a Sandwich - August 14, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
My dad found this stuff called Goof Off. It gets that stuff left after you take off a sticker off. You can literally put a drop of this on em, and bam, dead. You can also put some in front of the creases and stuff nd it works.
KuraiKitsune - August 14, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
Phoenix: Oh, I see about five or six every night. >.>'' Big ones, small ones, doesn't matter. It's pretty sad that I've seen enough of them so that I've been desensitized to their presence; I've gotten over my fear of roaches. :o
Zero: Whoa. Seriously? :o

Death Titan had a much simpler one, it went offline but I think he fixed it.

...What? o.o'' What are you talking about?
SpiralStatic - August 14, 2006 11:52 PM (GMT)
He posted in the wrong topic... that post was for the Exec board...

Hmm... well, in spraying a ground wasp nest with Raid, I learned the next day that it also serves as great weed-killer. Or rather, in large enough quantities, it leaves a brown patch of death on any vegitation. Raid=Killer of everything. Or at least everything that's not a roach.
You're dealing with a thing that survives radiation. You'll have to go for the unexpected, like the Lysol. Or Valter.
As for me, I have a 100% foolproof anti-roach treatment: LIVE IN MINNESOTA.

LoZfan03 - August 15, 2006 12:34 AM (GMT)
woot, ditto on that one. I don't think I've ever even seen a roach in person :P however, the mutant, bug-repellant-immune, mosquitoes aren't pleasant...
Nate - August 15, 2006 01:17 AM (GMT)
1. I use a broom stick as a cat toy... tie a string to one end and hang it on a chair...
2. I clean my MP3 screen with milk... I dunno but it works...
3. I clean my wood floor with the buffers for cars... just put a lil wood polish on it...
4. I learned that windex is the ultimate spray bottle for a kitten...
5. I use a skateboard decks (the wooden board) to form the bottom of my bed...
6. Um... my paper weight is also my piggy bank...

Newspaper works well in whacking the shit outta stuff.
And kurai! your right. There was a bee in my house yesterday, I hit it once with a spray on lysol, then it got drunk flying around and fell into the water. Course bugs cant swin(well most of em anyways) so it drowned...then I cut it in half.
KuraiKitsune - August 15, 2006 01:57 AM (GMT)
Yeah. Try it on flies. They just... die.
I'm thinking of trying it on the gnats outside. They kinda swarm all over the place. >.>''
Oh, yeah. I use vanilla in my paint. It doesn't smell when that happens. ^_^
Kio - August 15, 2006 02:08 AM (GMT)
Vanilla...BRILLIANT. Although paint doesn't smell bad to me...
Nate - August 15, 2006 04:44 AM (GMT)
I used rosemary instead of vanilla... it made it smell like the flowers in my garden (yes I garden... mutated oranges and apples mixed with carrots... they had radiation stuck in them... :P No but I really grow flowers in my window sill... they smell flowery...)
I Have a Sandwich - August 15, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
Kinda off topic, but if you have a problem with flies outside, fill up ziploc bags with water and just hang them outside. The flies should stop hanging around after like a day. Its weird but it works.

Oh Jesus. How the hell did that get there? I dont even remember looking at this topic.
SpiralStatic - August 15, 2006 11:10 PM (GMT)
I use a broom to kill moths that come in through the basement door... and I use a guitar pick to pick my teeth sometimes.
Esgalglinion - August 15, 2006 11:32 PM (GMT)
I once put this Dish Washer powder in the dish washer. Then, my bro went past me and started to annoy me. I threw one of these bags at him to make him shut up, and it worked, as it burst open and went down his throat. He couldn't speak for days.
Alternative use? Kinda.
My biggest discovery was when we got rat infested at home. My mom gets scared to death just if you say the name rat, and had me and my dad run arond putting up traps all day long. We never caught any rats, even though we used some very good tasting cheese.
One day, I got so frustrated with my mom, and instead of putting cheese on the trap, I put a piece of sour liqourice on the mouse trap.
Bam. Next day, we found three dead rats in the same mouse trap. Apparantly, rats like candy more than cheese.
Kio - August 16, 2006 12:41 AM (GMT)
HAH! I have a better rat killer. My dog phoenix. He ripped a rats heart out once....and we cought a few in mouse traps...and I stepped on one.(IT SURVIVED THAT)
And a really good snake killer (trust me a snakes been in my house before) Is a lawnmower. lead the fucker out then run it over.
Lades - August 16, 2006 01:01 AM (GMT)
A snake crawled up the ash drain in the fireplace and got into my house once. Poor sucker...we had just lit the fire... ^_^

But everyone can't have your dog Phoenix, which is why my rat catcher is better.
