Title: Back Temporarily...

It's a rather strange reason. I was going to be lurking on your FE10 board for info (as I have on FESS, gamefaqs, and other boards), as I have a really good feeling about this one (for no particular reason, though I thought FE9's story was pretty good). But I see that there's plenty I can put up and help inform about, so I'm going to be taking the liberty of putting any additional stuff I've found.

I'll also check on the older FE boards assuming they're less populated with stuffs.

Just figured I'd put something here so people aren't like "OMG someone who left is on and he didn't say hi!"

And I end (heh) by making a random reccomendation that you people may want to check out Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy. I stumbled upon the 2nd book and was intrigued by the cover, so I bought that and found the first. The characters can be pretty annoying sometimes, but it's extremely well crafted as a book.

Welcome back. I was wondering what had happened to you a few days ago.

What type of books are these Gormenghast books?

Erm...toughie, because the I've never read Dickens, who is the only well known author whom I've seen Peake (the author) compared to. The ones I've read (1st 2 of 3, with the 4th one on hold, permanently, because the author is dead) are about a castle, called Gormenghast, which is entrenched in ritual and tradition, and the birth and life of the 77th heir of the castle. During the first book, he's actually an infant the entire time, and it focues more on the events that occur as a consequence of his birth (and, of course, those events have a profound impact on Gormenghast and Titus). It's a lot about the sudden introduction of change and imagination into a "world" utterly lacking it, but the main plot is only the most important aspect of the book.

It's very well written, though I think it could probably prove a drag to people who like rapidly moving plots, cliffhangers, etc. Lots of fun metaphors, lit'rary devices, and stuff like that.

The title is kinda annoying to understand. Gorm-en-ghast...gorm isn't really a word, but gormless means dull, stupid, or lacking in vitality (which I believe is the intended meaning) - the natural assumption would be that gorm means intelligence or vitality but I've never seen it and don't think it really exists. Gormen might ~=~ gormless anyway. The castle really does lack an ability to change, so it seems gormless fits better. Ghastly, you prolly know, but it's like, horrifying, shocking, etc.

Sounds interesting. Actually, my English teacher recommended these books to me just today. I think I might read them once I finish all the other books I have to read.

I just finished The Belgariad and The Malloreon by David Eddings. All of the characters, especially the ones from The Belgariad, are very well made. The plot is interesting, too. The series mainly deals with fate/free will.

Right now I'm reading Crime and Punishment for English. I figure that will take me roughly a week longer.

After I'm done with that I want to read the Game of Throne series. I forgot who the author was. I here they are really good, though.

I read the Belgeraid/Mallorean as well. Personally, I found the overall plot pretty predictable (OMG GARION IS THE HEIR OF [walled city place] NEVER SAW IT COMING)...yet interesting, and the characters are well written and interesting. The 'little stuff' in the plot, like the witch in the fifth book of the Belgeraid who has that swamp full of creations, is also a very nice touch, and the 'along the way' events in Eddings' books are (almost) always well done.

I also like the priests in the Mallorean series, esp. the guy who seems more concerned with politiking his way to power through Torak's cult/religion than with the religion itself (I don't remember most names too well).

I haven't read Crime and Punishment or the bros. karamazov...however, my english teacher says she'll be assigning the former before the end of the year. The latter, I'm planning on reading on my own, because in another class we got a short section of it assigned (the Grand Inquisitor) and I got interested.

I haven't read that series either, but IIRC the author's name is Greg R (R?) Martin. I've heard it's good but I just haven't gotten 'round to it yet. Blame Steven Erikson, author of another long world-builder politifantasy book series; his first isn't all that great, but his ability improved greatly over the writing of his second two books. I'm thinking about staying with it, though he apparently has 6 or so more books 'ta write.

Yeah, the Belgariad and Malloreon were very predictable.

The Game of Thrones series is very long. I think they are about 1000 pages each. I think he plans on writing ten in all but only about five are out now.

Hello old fogey returning member. : D

HEYHEYHEY I'm primarily here to post in the FE10 section, how can you say I'm a fogey if I'm with the times on the most recent Fire Emblem? It's so recent it's not even out yet! If anything I'm decidedly unfogey'ish!

And good ta seeya kip. Are you still owning, pwning, l33+owning, pizzowning, and calzowning all n00bs in sight?

KuraiKitsune - October 31, 2006 03:05 AM (GMT)
xD 'Old fogey', eh?

I hope you stick around longer than usual, this time. ^_^ Stay for more than FE10 stuff; stay to talk to us, too! :3

Alright, I'll stop by on occaision to chat, k?

*Starts grumbling like an old fogey*

Back in my day, our gaming communities didn't have chats. Hell, we didn't even have posts! Or internet! We didn't have these random number computer techno-jumbo witchmagik! We just sat around some table and rolled dice all day! And you know what? We goddamn liked it!

(actually I've played DnD type stuff a whole two times, but that's the best comparison I could come up with quickly on short notice for an old fogey rant).

*End old fogey mode*

I think I should be able to come and go "erratically constantly", strange as that might sound - I'm kind of busy but I can probably make "consistent erratic" visits to the board. But for the most part, I always already need my own free time for solitary'ish stuff like reading and such because I'm able to sacrifice a lot more free time for social stuff now that I don't have to leave lots of time for working for grades in school (it's mah senior year, the 1st marking period is coming to a peaceful close, and I'm not applying early to any schools).

Pondy, I think. I'm basing this almost entirely on two things: the GFX stuff, which I remember you did, and the bird thing in your avatar which I think I remember you having in some sort of other image before. Maybe a sports team logo or a sigg'ish image for gfx stuff or something? Regardless I definitely connect it with you for some reason.

I'm not really sure, though.

I can't exactly prove that no one told me, but no one did.
