Well, he meant for it to be a joke, bashing Bush... But it didn't turn out right.
Side-note: One of my teachers is over in Iraq. And my mother's boyfriend's son is in Afganistan.

I don't know anything about this situation, but I doubt it was meant to be an actual insult to soldiers. Seeing as Kerry got the democratic nomination in 2004, he obviously knows something about politics. Any politician would know that doing something like that would be political suicide. He probably meant it in a different way and the media caught it and was like "ZOMG Kerry hates soldiers."

Kerry made some joke, bashing Bush and his governmentals... but when he first said it, he failed to include that it was only towards Bush and others, not about the soldiers...

“You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.” — John Kerry
Thats the quote. I see, in no way whatsoever, how that line can be interpreted as anything not against soldiers. Later of course, to try and save his stupid arse, he said he meant to say, “You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get us stuck in Iraq.” which of course makes no sense either. He said something he thought would get people on his side again, and it backfired.

The actual way it went down is that he said stuff about soldiers; the speech that was prepared was a joke making fun of George Bush. He said the wrong words, basically.
That being said, the joke reveals three things, one negative (in my view) about kerry, two which I've already realized about stuff in general.
1: You don't botch "george bush" into "soldiers" without something going on in your head. When I consider some things Kerry said about soldiers in Vietnam - which were not entirely unfounded - it seems very likely he may have, yes, some contempt for soldiers today, even distrust. Personally, I don't think of that as a postive thing, because while he might have more a right than most to judge other soldiers, I'd really prefer my politicians to be on the side of the soldiers and such, and not even hiding negative opinions about them in general.
2: What Kerry said is actually somewhat true. American soldiers have, on average, lower levels (or years) of education than average americans of the same age. Why? Well, as you guys might be aware, our army aggressively campaigns for recruits in lower income areas, knowing that the job opportunities outside of getting killed are a lot better than what many have in their futures otherwise. Is this a good thing?
3: Politicians totally suck. Just like the Foley issue, we see an attempt by the enemy party to cause an overreaction by the public. I'm not saying I'm not glad so many people are voting republican, but it's a pretty pathetic reason to change your vote - I seriously doubt the whole republican party was backing foley, but it seems like the whole party is taking damage from it.

Thanks for that pic. I saw it on the news and wanted it XD
I agree for the first point. You don't botch it up that bad unless you have a confliction of thoughts.
As for the 'stupid soldiers' bit, even if they are over there, the way I see it is you're not, and if you want to bad mouth them, get your ass over there and do it to their face. Just because you are from a 'low income' situation, hardly means you're stupid. I know plenty of people planning to join the military, not because they can't get into college, not because they're 'too stupid', but because they want to serve for their country. Even if they are of a lower education, the military today trains them so that even if they had no future before, they have a better chance now.
And as for Foley, the 'victim' was of consenting age and, well, consented. It't like he was a 12 year old forced to 'lick daddys lolipop'.
*Will vote republican **Awaits flames and insults***

I'm not saying the soldiers are stupid. I'm saying that lower income people with less education are targetted for recruitment by the armed forces. The statement rings vaguely true.
There's not even a victim in Foley's case. They never even proved they had sex (I mean, I'm sure they did, but it's gotta be proven). The whole thing is disgusting but there's actually no laws against IM sex as far as I know. The real problem was that it showed what a two-faced SOB pervert Foley was when he was supposed to be working as a senator. Clinton was worse in some categories, better in others; not publically against what he was doing like foley, and thus not a hypocritical two-faced ass, but he lied on the stand, and thus was a dishonest two-faced ass.

Foley was a paedophile, there's something in the constitution about that.
Clinton and his vantrilequists used "spin;" they didn't necessarily lie about scandals, they just twisted around what the media was saying; the Clinton administration was painting a new canvas of Clinton over what the media had painted. . . But soon it all fell apart and the media was on to them.

I'm pretty sure that to be a pediphile you have to have sex or interest in someone UNDER 18. The little paige or whatever was like 23. It's not like he was a confused child, the guy knew what he was doing.

The kid was 23 when the story came out... And it came out YEARS after it happened. The other government official that knew about the messeges, but didn't tell anyone is going to be dropped pretty hard (if they ever prove that he's guilty of knowing back in the day).
I Have a Sandwich - November 3, 2006 02:36 PM (GMT)
I believe I heard he was over 23 when this was all goiun on. Thats why I said he was 23 or something, nopt anymore. From what I heard, it was all legal, and people tried to make a big deal out of it.

I only remember 'cause I heard it on the radio one morning, then I started flipping out about the media's timeliness. The incidents happened years ago, but the media was finally bringing the story out now. And Foley put himself into rehab. for being a pedophile: "I like little boys! Help me!"
