Title: Colleges...
Description: Are you excited?
Severian - November 19, 2006 09:48 PM (GMT)
I do not forsee problems with getting into good schools. The problem is enthusiasm. I know I'm going to college, because salary is generally better with a higher level education. But spending another 4 years in any form of education is not exactly my idea of "the best four years of your life" that so many promise college is. And the classes I've sat in are actually somewhat discouraging, being better than an average class but nowhere near the level of my best 2 or 3. A party school idea is, of course, an option, but I feel like if I go to one it'll help me less during the rest of my life.
The main reason I chose the school I've applied early to, Macalester, is because it's in the Minneapolis/St Paul area, which I like a lot, being cold and having good restaurants, transportation (as far as I can tell), and so forth. My parents wanted me to go for a more competitive college, but I'm convinced those places are filled with overachievers or idiots with legacies (good old bush went to yale - need I continue?).
Are you guys all a little more enthusiastic? I know other kids at my high school are almost universally ecstatic with energy they've been committing to their essays and applications, and sure that college will be better than high school.

I don't really need to worry about this stuff until Senior year. Part of me figures I'm going to MUN, but something tells me I should apply for Harvard and all those top schools in the States just to see if I can make it.
I really think high school will be the best years of my life. Only here can you play on sports teams without being elite, see so many people every single day, have Spirit Week, and so many other things that I'll miss wholeheartedly once I'm gone. :/

Ah, College... dear college. Dude, my school's ALREADY filled with overachievers and idiots with legacies... so I don't really care where I go to college. I just want to go to college and get that over with. Hopefully, I'll get a job at some office, working in some cubicle, and I'll be happy, cause that'll only be my day job, I'll be a guitarist by night... MWAHAHAHAHA

"Do [insert activity I don't want to do]/Study more/do your homework now, it'll be good for college."
"No."
"Rawr, no computer or TV time."
"Fine." =/

I am excited about college. Very excited. I've three in mind: Kent State, Marietta, and Hiram (in no particular order). I'll either--hopefully--go to Marietta with my cousins; or Hiram. I'm betting more towards Hiram (though my dream is to go to college in California).
Hiram has this really spiffy... like, semester set-up. They call it the "12/3." You take 3 classes for 12 weeks. And then there's a time, I believe it's after the first 12/3, where you take one specific course for 3 weeks.
However, I'm worried about the cost. :/ And horrified at the idea of going to a place where I won't know anyone.

I dunno, I don't quite get why so many people want to go to a high end college all four years. I'm just gonna go to LB City college for 2 years to get my basic credits, then move on to LBUSC or something (Hopefully). I'd rather to to Texas AM but I'm in California and thatd be pricey.

I was considering Ivyleagues in 10th grade and earlier, because it's possible but by no means certain for me. I figured that was a good thing, as it's by no means certain for nearly anyone who's applying to those places.
And in the case of yale, I have a very good chance, because in addition to being within their range of accepted students academically and other strengths, I have a legacy, as my dad went there.
But,
1: $45000 tuition is pretty steep
2: Assumed snobbiness
3: Father liked but didn't love it
4: New Haven seems boring (problem with a number of ivies)
5: AFAIK it's harder to get into an ivy grad if you were an undergrad at that school
If I seriously want to be a supersmart scholar and stuff I figure I'll go to one of them for graduate school, if that. But I figure I want to go to a college, that is, undergrad only place, not a university (more chance of professors interested primarily in undergrads).

Ooh, Kent State! One of my favorite authors (Stephen R Donaldson) went there! They have an archive of his works and some papers and stuff that analyzed his work.
It's also well known for the KSU shootings :"(
One of my friends is looking at Hiram as a possibility. He's really aiming for Notre Dame, though, which his dad has a legacy at. I didn't know about the class setup...I feel like I'd end up torn over which to choose, but at the same time I'd like to have that level of intensity in a course I really care about.
I'm actually kinda excited about not knowing people. I enjoyed my first year of high school for that reason, but as older kids left and new kids who I'd known from previous middle schools entered, it got less and less fun in that regard.

My province has the second lowest tuition in Canada, I figure there's really no point to leave to go elsewhere. Maybe Nova Scotia or New Brunswich, depending on what I want to do. I mean, why consider universities if you have no clue what's going on?

I'm looking forward to college in many ways. I'm almost certainly going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I'm hoping that most of my friends will end up there within a few years, and we will likely all dorm together. However, I do think that I'll miss living alone with my mom, because I really like it how I'm home alone alot. It seems that if I dorm with alot of people there will almost certainly always be someone there.
Education-wise, I'm looking forward to college as well. I tend to enjoy higher level classes more than lower level classes. Also, I'll finally be able to take philosophy classes as well as other kind of classes that aren't offered at high school.
Valter - November 20, 2006 12:08 AM (GMT)
College is really hard. D: Expect retarded roommates.
Kyrillos - November 20, 2006 12:18 AM (GMT)
I'm hoping to go to a non-Chicago State School, but I'd rather go to DePauw in Greenville, Indiana.
I'd rather not go to Chicago. I've been there alot, it's a very busy city. Very Utilitarian. People drive like lunatics. Like Michigan is just well...a Sea, by all definitions. It's really a night city, nothing to do until your 21. Well...besides the S. I don't do the D's. In fact, I hate D's. Period.
I'm currently looking at Northern Illinois University. I might go South, to St. Louis, but I'm trying to shy away from...that direction. South+Chicago Cubs Fan=Murder.
I'd like to go to MAYBE Minnesota, but it'd be hard to visit a college that far away.
'Ivan - November 20, 2006 12:22 AM (GMT)
I doubt I'll pass high school.
SpiralStatic - November 20, 2006 01:37 AM (GMT)
I'm also considering not going to college at all... I've been considering going into the music business... but it's definitely a tough choice... Economical security or self-fulfillment... it's a really tough choice...

I hope, but doubt, I can get into UMD. D:

A couple years ago I was thinking about a MD veterinary school college / university.
Alex - November 20, 2006 01:49 AM (GMT)
UMD has become a hard school to get in. ;_;
Plus, this year, I'm probably going to end up killing my GPA. =/
strikeraider827 - November 20, 2006 01:56 AM (GMT)
I don't know how I feel about college. I have no clue what I want to do. I've been thinking, and I really want to go to the University of Michigan.... Badly... But it'll be hell to get in...
I don't want to take the easy way out and go to OSU Marion. ALl I have to do is graduate and I'm in. But I hate Ohio. We'll see what happens....
dark menace - November 20, 2006 03:16 AM (GMT)
Hehe, what with weighted courses and all, my GPA is a 4.12, and the rest of my grade are idiots, so Ima finish top in my class.
I'm going to a city school. Dun matter where, just gotta be in a city. I was thinking Fordham, Georgetown, or Syracuse would be sweet

Seriously? I'm the opposite. I'd never be able to live in a city, especially for college/university/whatever. I'm scared of them. :P
dark menace - November 20, 2006 03:21 AM (GMT)
I'm sick of my isolated home. I hate the suburbs. Nothin to do. In the city, there's always something going on. Plays, festivals, whatever. Its just fun
Arcan - November 20, 2006 05:42 AM (GMT)
Gah-I hate those of you who get to use a 5 point scale for GPA-we use five.
Anyway, college is something I try not to worry too much about-I'm filling up on the extra currics though-my schedule is pretty much packed five days a week until....after Feb.
As for location, I've a few in mind, and a few I'll apply to just to see if I could get in:
OSU, CalTech, OU(pretty much the biggggg fall back school-if I get a 32 on the ACT (only 31 when I took this summer :() I get a full ride)
As for the just to see if I could get in:
Yale
Harvard
MIT...
pretty much any other ivy league that has an astrophysics program.

Amen Brutha.
But, seeing the subject matter...ITT Tech or another school I believe is called Fullcast. I love the requirements. Graduate, and make a 900 on the new SAT. ^_^
Or I'll go to Valter's College. What's that college again?
Valter - November 20, 2006 12:53 PM (GMT)
Alabama. You need to know your college football if you go there. O.O
