Title: Ouch. o.o

KuraiKitsune - November 29, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
Say, I have a problem. I have an ingrown thumbnail on my right hand, and I find that, rather than going away after a constant bath of Neosporin, salt water baths, and peroxide, it's developed into a rather inflamed, very sore wound that bleeds if I hit it.

...*Wipes blood off the keyboard*

...Anyone know what I could put on this thing to shrink it or at least make the pain stop? Aspirin made it bleed more (and I knew it was a blood thinner, too. >.>''), but it made the pain go away.

The last time this happened, it was on my toe, and I literally cut out the abscess. But, see, I can't do that to my right hand. :/

Gross, I know. x.x

I find Advil's a good pain killer, if that helps any. Sadly, I know nothing about ingrown finger-/toenails. Sorry. :/

KuraiKitsune - November 29, 2006 01:47 AM (GMT)
Well, I ripped the nail out. :/ Probably wasn't a smart thing to do, but I acted on impulse. :/

Ah, I see. I'll go look for some. :o

I Have a Sandwich - November 29, 2006 01:56 AM (GMT)
Yeah. The only ay to get rid of an ingrown nail is to cut it out.

Alex - November 29, 2006 01:59 AM (GMT)
Ugh. =X

Try wiki-ing ingrown toenail or something. X_x

Wikipedia has everything. X_x

Mine went away after REALLY hot salt water and such. It's gonna bleed.

Silenthunder - November 29, 2006 03:07 AM (GMT)
So you don't have a thumb fingernail? Ouch is right. Maybe try the doctor and they might have some special thing that can help you. If not you can just be overcharged with a visit there when they tell you things that you already know.

Karn - November 29, 2006 03:35 AM (GMT)
Wrap it in something. If it's under a bandage you can't mess with it. My wounds heal slowly because I ignore them when doing things when I should be careful or I mess with them.

Esgalglinion - November 29, 2006 07:02 AM (GMT)
Although you've probably already done it too, see a doctor. Or at least the school nurse.

Lades - November 29, 2006 01:36 PM (GMT)
Grit your teeth and pull.

Oh...you already did? Then don't hit your finger.
(BTW. There's a page error here)

Ok, a few questions. How old is your peroxide? Not too sure about the other stuff, but I'm pretty sure the stuff stops working effectively long before it stops stinging. I tried this sort of thing with a few athelete's foot type blisters I got on my big toe a while ago, didn't cleanse it after I dug it out. Not that there are any labels on mine about "expiration dates", but meds do decay if they sit around for a while.

It mighta also been because I was doing my mock surgery with a soaped but not sterilized pocketknife (nice and dull), which I assume was extremely stupid of me.

And I wouldn't suggest surgical type stuff without a doctor, mainly because it often won't work too well. When I tried to deal with the toe problem (it was some sorta fungus that was infecting me, actually) it just grew back in a day or two. So I went to a foot doctor (podiatrist?) and she took care of it for me.

Of course, that was an invading fungal agent which was bad around light and dryness, probably not whatever's on your hand. But, umm, if you're desperate, why not get someone else to do it as long as you're good at holding still? Long as they aren't squeamish.

I have absolutely no idea what sort of meds one might take for wounds and stuff. In terms of painkillers, the only one I've experience with is aleve. It's a short term kinda thing, really shouldn't be used for more than a week, but you only need 1 every 12 hours and it starts fast. But I mainly suffer from occaisional aches and pains, don't get anything above minor scrapes mostall of the time.

In general, "Dr" Sevvy says get it dealt with, even if it means paying the copay out of your own pocket. My bro had some guy in his dorm who had to go to the hospital because he let a wound fester. Not that I have any real experience, but don't let it sit around if you can't get it healed up yourself.

My inspiration's run dry, that's all I can come up with. And, if it helps your spirits, remember I - and I'm sure everyone else on FEW - would be happy to surgify your nail for you. I'm probably no where near enough to grant that promise, so I feel safe saying that.

Hydrogen Peroxide does lose potency. I think it spontaneously breaks down or something like that. That's why they keep it in the dark container, but that doesn't completely stop it.

Actually, that makes it worse. :/ I tried it today, and all it did was make the skin white, peel-prone, swollen, and generally painful. >.< It made it look real nasty too, but I assume that's just me gettin' squeamish.

Bucket: Oh, my peroxide... it's from the 99 cent store. xD I have no idea how old it is. For all I know, I might have just rubbed water straight from the peroxide bottle onto my thumb. :/ Although, on a side note, that same thing on your toe acts like this one skin tag on my knee. I keep cutting it off, it keeps growing back.

...But you probably didn't need to know that. o.o

Karn - November 30, 2006 01:27 AM (GMT)
Ah, that's what it is. I think Hydrogen Peroxide spontaneously breaks down into water by losing a hydrogen. . .

KuraiKitsune - November 30, 2006 01:29 AM (GMT)
Yup. H2O2. I just don't know how long it takes to break down. :/ Damn me for falling asleep in Chemistry. xD

Hiei - November 30, 2006 01:54 AM (GMT)
... my friend had an ingrown toenail, he had to get surgery

Well, for me it was really annoying, like a parasite. Actually, I suppose it was a parasite. Anyway, first there was one big blister and I popped that with my finger, poured peroxide on it and soaped it up and stuff, and hoped it'd get better. Than a few days later it was back as a bunch of small blisters. I tried a knife on those, and got them all out but ended up with a single larger wound. Then that grew back into a blister in another few nights, and then I said "ya, doctor time". It had also....started to, like, stink

No, I don't like cutting myself, there wasn't much blood anyway, just lotsa puss. But I have a scar from the scraping the foot doc did.

Well, I know absolutely nothing about hydrogen peroxide and why it works...but I just looked at some site that said denaturing often occurs because of breaking down of hydrogen bonds.

So that makes some sense and all, maybe?

Karn - November 30, 2006 03:11 AM (GMT)
Wait, how does hydrogen peroxide denature? It's not a protein. . .

The way I'm using the term might be bastardized. I'm using it in the context of any sort of molecule breaking down or changing composition or whatever so that the effect weakens...and while I know it's used generally, if it's specific to proteins it's probably a generalized bastardation.

When I think about it, it was always used in reference to proteins in Bio and AP bio...but that's possibly because those are the only molecules (I can think of off the top of my head) one would be likely to use the term in reference to during those classes.

Valter - December 1, 2006 12:49 AM (GMT)
You already did it, but oh well. I'd just rip it out and get a napkin to get the blood.

Puff - December 1, 2006 09:54 PM (GMT)
I had the same problem (In my two big toes). You have to let the thing grow out. :/

Silenthunder - December 3, 2006 03:58 AM (GMT)
If you are going to go to the doctor do it now and not later. My sister had planter's warts on her feet and didn't go to the doctor. Now she finally did, and has to put this liquid on her foot that destroys the skin and the warts and then she has to scrape the dead skin off with a razor thingy. So, just go to the doctor before it gets any worse.

My brother used a pocket knife and took his nail off from about where his knuckle is to the nail... now the nail is permanently gone but the plus was now he doesn't have the ingrown nail... (I don't suggest it because the skin beneath is fragile and can cut easily...

I did something like that with the nail on my right middle finger. But mine is slowly growing back. . . . . The story is, I lost my cuticle somehow and acquired an infection under my nail. So I used scissors and cut it out. It was annoying.

KuraiKitsune - December 3, 2006 03:22 PM (GMT)
I think it's starting to get better. :o A few days of leaving it alone completely (only cutting off the parts with pus with a nail clipper... painful. >.<), with the exception of daily rubbing alcohol baths (which hurt quite a bit), and I think it's getting better. :o

The nail's starting to grow back. I just hope it doesn't dig into the skin by growing too much. o.o Otherwise, I'll have to either cut the nail or rip it out and start this whole process again. >.<
