The deep south to me as I considered it is pretty much the black territory like Alabama and Georgia, as well as Tennessee, Kentucky, etc. S'always bugged me how Texas gets thrown in there, seeing as how we're so damn progressive. I mean hell, Houston if I remember correctly is on the top 5 gay cities in the US. Maybe it was lower than that, but I could swear it was higher up.

Ya. Texas is not the south. Texas is like, the place you go to get the most kickass mexican food in the USA AND the most kickass barbeque. I was born in Texas, I love it. NJ is only better because a train into Hoboken or Penn Station is only 2 blocks from my house, and public transport in general (which is cool for longer trips because you get to read) is pumped here. In houston from my experience it's not very good. Even the ramps built so excess traffic could be dealt with reasonably get filled up...probably because there are car dealerships EVERYWHERE! There's some highway(s) with like a billion in a row! I swear, I saw more parked care than I do at unloading or loading areas (I don't know which) for cars here on the east.

It is worth saying that cities have a tendency to be more liberal and democratic than rural areas, which tend to be more republican and conservative (look at maps for voting districts instead of by state and you'll see).

Texas is oil capital USA, we have so much public transportation, I have trouble; not in finding one, but finding which one I want to take more.

But yeah, it's crazy, if you start from downtown in the bigger cities and go the "big rural cities", in between there's so many car dealerships it's not even funny. I go to the Gudalope river like every other weekend, and once I counted all the car dealership lots along the way, and I got bored after like 40.

Hell man, I took a ride from I think somewhere around the edge of Denton/Ft Worth to Windthorst. Goddamn, inside limits you have em every 4 or 5 ft with nice new cars. You kepe goin and they get to about 1 every 5 or 10 miles of used cars. Keep on goin north and you get little random junkyards everywhere. God, I love Texas.
