Usually, it's rock, but with a more "metal" tone to it. That means they use electric guitars and drums a lot more than ordinary rock.

Well, I hear it mentioned from time to time, but mostly I tend to think of it as a type of music dedicated to science...

Metal is pretty much, in it's broadest definition, music that rely's heavily on electric guitars and drums for a more pounding sound. Bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath can be seen as metal by this definition. However, metal has spread into several branches, such as industrial, detah metal, black metal, hardcore, thrash, grunge, etc.

Some bands you may heard of that are generally metal are Metallica, Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

And Kiss AKA guys in funny masks. Not that there aren't a ton of those, just that Kiss' masks are...memorable.

Megadeath is one of the big ones too, right?

Yeah, forgot Kiss. But Megadeth is big, as is Slayer, etc. I just listed some old ones that maybe she'd at least know the name.
