Title: 300

Durendal - March 24, 2007 02:06 AM (GMT)
I just got back from 300 and I have to say. 300 is the most badass fuckin' piece of cinematic genius I have ever seen in my entire life.

I actually really want to see it, despite all the gore and stuff (from what the ads portray, anyway). Doubt it'll come to the theatre here, though. :/

I Have a Sandwich - March 24, 2007 02:16 AM (GMT)
I saw it the Saturday after it's release. My favorite scene is still in the beginning when Leonidas takes down all the Persians in slow/fast motion.

Durendal - March 24, 2007 02:22 AM (GMT)
NO I changed my mind, my favourite scene was right before the persian God-King first talked to Leonidas, when he was talking to his captain about civility while they killed the persians still alive after the battle. "Theres no reason we can't be civil now is there?" *CRUNCH* "No my lord, none at all"

I Have a Sandwich - March 24, 2007 02:56 AM (GMT)
Or when Xerces said all Leonidas had to do was kneel, and he said something along the lines of "I'd kneel, but my leg is a bit cramped from killing so many of your men, so I don't think I can do that."

How the fuck do you remember all these names? I was too caught up in the gore to remember any names.

Dragon_Tam3r - March 24, 2007 03:08 AM (GMT)
Eh, Mabey because they're (hard to believe it from the movie, I know) based on actual, you know...people?

Cause I read the comic awhile back XD

My history class actually spent a day going over the historical accuracy, and just about everything is based on facts, but they were exaggerated... If I still had the article I'd scan it.... but every name in the movie was historically accurate, and there was a traitor... only he wasn't crippled, he was just a normal guy. There was actually a group called the immortals, but again, they were inhuman or with sharpened teeth, just normal guys with a crap load of military training.

Aside from that though, 300 was freakin' amazing, saw it opening day, since my school happened to get out at 12:30 that day so avoided basically all crowds.

Before I start nitpicking, let me say I thought the movie was awesome, except that I found the home-front stuff with Queen Gorgo/Gorgon (don't remember) rather boring and kitschy. I did enjoy Dominic West's portrayal of [insert generic treacherous evil chancellor's name here], but I couldn't stop thinking of Officer McNulty from the Wire. Drug wars in bmore and the police do not have an extremely strong or relevant connection to Ancient Greece.

Also, the movie doesn't claim to be a historical thingy in the first place, and I thought it did a really good job considering that. All in all, I think it was better for it, with a few exceptions.

And the "MADNESS? THIIISSS IISSS SPAAAARRRTTTTAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!" is currently one of my favorite responses to stuff.

Some things I noticed:
+Just to counterbalance the random nitpicking, they really got down aristeia in visual form, which is (basically) when some random warrior dude kicks a lot of ass and gets the focus. If you've ever read the iliad, when achilles or hector or diomedes (among others) kill a bunch of people, get some epic similes written about them, etc, that's aristeia.
-One of things I liked was that the Spartans having no armor outside the helmets. I mean, seriously, not true, but awesome! I guess their sweat-slicked muscles deflected swords or something.
-Ok, seriously, Jesus? Why do they make comparisons between Leonidas and Jesus? The 3 temptations, the picture of Leonidas' death,
-In the original history, Leonidas was one of the first to die during the last stand, and his troops recovered his troops a buncha times (I think something like 30-70 times) from the Persians before they all died. I bet this was a blatant exaggeration as well...but I still would've liked to see it.
-Sparta had quite a lot of slaves, and even had a slave army (similar to the barbarians recruited into later roman armies) IIRC, so it's funny that there was so much bragging about freedom; indeed, in Gene Wolfe's Latro in the Mist series, Sparta is "Rope" compared to Athens (Thought), highlighting the oppressive nature of that city-state. (You can look up helots for more info; one of the rites of passage for spartan men was killing a bunch of unarmed slaves). The freed population, the Dorics, were actually barbarians who went into Laconia (where Laconic comes from btw; spartans like Menelaus were known for their terse rhetoric).
-I'm fairly sure Xerxes wasn't an absolute fruitcake, but I don't really care too much on that part.
-The religious views of Leonidas (atheistic) are pretty questionable, since even among the elite of Athens it wasn't really around till the Hellenistic era, in works like The Altar of Zeus, where the portrayal of the gods defeating the titans was more an analogy to the greek civilization, and actual worship wasn't emphasized.
EDIT-I heard these on online sources and don't know if they're accurate.
-Boy loving was actually a Spartan pastime (apparently actual sex was looked down on though). For anyone opposed to that, though, don't worry; Sparta was also ok with lesbians (w00t).
-In Herodotus' history there were a few thousand greeks who fought, and died, with the Spartans, and 700 soldiers from one place (starts with a T) stayed and died with them during the last stand.

I watched this movie before, and aside from all the action that's awesome, I thought it was pretty funny. Yes... flying heads make me laugh.

Severian - March 29, 2007 06:56 PM (GMT)
Oh, and today in math class...
My friend: [something about 300]
Teacher: You mean that CG with an excuse for a plot?
Me: Hell yes! And that CG was good shit, too!

Evan - April 17, 2007 08:30 AM (GMT)
I heard it was just a bunch of senseless battles and abnoxious screaming.
Thought it was going to be similar to Troy, but i heard otherwise.

Silenthunder - April 18, 2007 03:10 AM (GMT)
I saw it after Easter dinner. One of my favorite parts was when Xerces made Leonidas kneel, so Leonidas did, and he put down his shield/helmet to help his balance and stuff. Then he speared Xerces in the face in slo-mo.

Esgalglinion - April 18, 2007 08:54 AM (GMT)
It was cool alright, but hey, the lack of physics kinda made me comment everytime someone got killed. And that was a lot. :P

ANOTHER betrayal of greek philosophy. Anyone who knows anything realizes that the theme of greek myths (with the exception of Prometheus) pretty much deal with the balance of nature, and mankind's subservience to nature, fate, etc. Showing greeks overcoming the laws of physics betrays their own ideals.

Karn - April 19, 2007 06:11 PM (GMT)
-Sparta was not ruled by a council, but by two kings.
-Yeah, there were some Greeks that stayed and fought.

However, none of the historical stuff matters because the movie was badass.
