Title: Now it's personal
Description: Colbert's Presidential Run
SeverIan. - October 17, 2007 08:13 AM (GMT)
Yup, he's declared himself a candidate. And rabid fans continue the edit wars on wikipedia as we speak; a couple hours ago it read:
| QUOTE |
| Every potential candidate from both parties (excluding Mike Gravel) dropped out of the race within 6 hours of Colbert's announcement. |
These will probably outlast the war in iraq.
Any thoughts about SC and his campaign? Actually worthwhile? A mockery of the last remaining bits of integrity in american politics? Or just funny as hell?

The little I know about Colbert, all he'll do is sap a small minority of votes from the Democrats. Just like Nader in 2000.

If he gets over 2% of the votes, theres somethign wrong with this country.
Oh wait, we re-elected Bush....
Somethings wrong with this country.

Colbert's not funny. He's annoying and arrogant. I honestly hate him in every facet of the word. If he runs for the presidency, that is a disgusting joke of the legal system and AMerican politics.
UnrealBlight - October 17, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
I saw the episode, he said he's only running as a "favorite son" in his home-state.

Wait, how's he going to get the (as I understand it) gigantic sum he needs to enter the race? (I mean at the final stage)

I don't think that much money is required to simply run. If you look at many of the third party candidates who have ballot/write in status in a couple states they don't exactly have huge war chests. I mean, there are some fairly powerful candidates w/ well managed campaigns (see mike badnarik, i don't like many of his policies but he is really a very skilled campaigner) but it's hardly required for getting write-in status.
There are already candidates as silly and pointless as colbert - see the National Barking Spider Party and Skunkfeathers. The guy actually has write in status and (I think) has gotten votes.
But I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a joke.
As for nader, hey - IIRC something like 40% of his votes were dems. The rest were about split between dems and "wouldn't vote if you weren't in the race." And the dem candidates sapped their own votes - if they wanted to get nader's votes they could've changed their platform (as nader himself has said).

I would agree with you if we didn't have a band of court jesters running already. At least he's funny and knows that he's a joke; folks like richardson and romney don't seem to get how full of shit they are. And clinton and giuliani are flipping around and centralizing themselves far more shamelessly than kerry ever did. I mean look at Thompson, constantly canceling appearances, if he can't even go into a campaign he's kidding himself if he thinks he's qualified for pres. At least Colbert gets on TV on a regular schedule.

Hmmm...Now I'm torn with my vote...if he's president, that means that his show will hopefully be taken off air for a term, and that means more South Park.
Hmmmm.
Trace Stratus - October 18, 2007 11:38 AM (GMT)
Yeahhhhhhhhh, he's not running for the presidency. << He's never seriously considered it, he's just teasing the fans with false hopes and dreams that they themselves should realive will never happen.
And those of you upset about how he acts on TV, that's not how he is in real life...you know...after all...it's a TV show...duh. :/

Are you trying to say you think SC's TV personality wouldn't make a good commander in chief? *GASPS*

Of course, I forgot about being a Write In candidate. That costs nothing, I think.
If I remember correctly, it costs something like $250,000 to be an official, 'X marks the spot' candidate in America.

Simply put, no I didn't even touch the subject with a 3 yard pole. :/

That $250,000 is excluding any money spent on campaigning (Which can get pretty high up there.)

Forget what I said, Colbert is running for presidency in South carolina as a favorite son and is being sponsered by Doritoes. Wtf, this should be entertaining.
