Title: "The pen is greater than the sword"??
'Ivan - August 19, 2004 02:26 PM (GMT)
I seriously
hope you already know what this means, but for those who don't, it's basically saying that peace is better than war.
Now, I don't share this opinion, but a famous Army serviceman stated this:

I throughly enjoyed that...

lol, you should have usedgreen earth infantry. OS suck.

Well, it's actually "mightier" than the sword, implying that a skilled stateman and speaker who rallies support is better than a powerful warrior.
I just checked up on it on E2. According to one noder, it was originally said in the play Richelieu (1839), and it's usually paraphrased from:
Beneath the rule of men entirely great,
The pen is mightier than the sword.
Thus, it does not encourage peace. It's merely an alalogy to the power that politicians have over war, and the propaganda wars waged with pens.
Or, alternatively, from Terry Pratchett's The Light Fantastic:
The pen is mightier than the sword...
Only if the pen is very sharp and the sword very small.
I'm not sure if the Light Fantastic is the originating source of this quote, though.

| no its not. |
Do you mean "No, the Light Fantastic is not the source of that quote", or "No, Mr Bucket, that entire thing you wrote was wrong".
Also, while I'm readily able to believe the former, do you by any chance know the origin of the general "haha that's stupid" type critique of "Pen>Sword"?

I have to agree. I like some of Pratchett's later stuff (SAM VIMES, WHOO), but those first two bad, excepting for Rincewind and the Luggage.
EDIT-America: The Book is pretty good though.
vashies - June 21, 2005 05:29 AM (GMT)
the pen is way mighter than the sword, cause the pen can wright a law to outlaw swords
Míxtil_<3_fish! - June 21, 2005 06:09 PM (GMT)
vaseis, that is a very good deduction
*debate hormones fail*

The pen is mightier than the sword as long as you're dealing with sane individuals, once you start trying to make peace with druggies, may God help you.

Signaturized as soon as I get tired of my current quote.

True, but the sword can cut the paper the law is written on in half.
Míxtil_<3_fish! - June 24, 2005 06:15 PM (GMT)
all the druggies i know are very peace loving.
Gatemaster Leon - June 24, 2005 06:36 PM (GMT)
All the druggies I know want to beat the s*** out of me, except for one, but I've known him for a long time...
Edit: I'm going to be signaturized! Yay!
