Title: Human Engineering

Do you think it's possible? Should it be legal? What are your thoughts?

Ex. improving intellgence/physical abilities through science.

Ever heard of the story "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keys?

No. It shouldn't be done.

Karn - January 30, 2005 09:34 PM (GMT)
If they perfect it, I think it should be legal. But untill then no it shouldn't be to many side effects.

Malkav - January 30, 2005 09:35 PM (GMT)
It wouldn't be too difficult at all to do it, but it would cause worldwise problems. Humanity as a species isn't ready for an improved humanity. The bigotry and infighting over it alone is enough of a reason to just say no at this point in time.

'Ivan - January 30, 2005 09:38 PM (GMT)
0 Defense and Resistance? What are you, ma- oh, right. Err.

Not difficult you say? It's neurosurgery! One mistake and "Oh, his IQ's gonna drop a couple points or so, no problem."

Well, you wouldn't really want to do it with living specimens...You would be altering DNA and genes to get small advantages at first, and that is quite simple. It is not hard to find genes that support a thin body, a fast mind, or a nice skin tone.

The real problem with alterations like that, is however minor, each one triggers millions of others (genes) in ways still unknown to us. Giving a newborn baby nice full black hair could result in him probably getting cancer at 20, or something we cannot begin to guess at.

Yup, heard all about it. Read part of it in english textbook. I think if it was used on a select few after it's closer to perfection, yes. But if this was to go worldwide and have two species of human, the 'Coordinators'(I just had to) and the normal humans, it would be bad. In Charlie's case, no he shouldn't have gone through with it. Right now: test it on animals, ok by me. Test it on humans, no way, not until I get involved.

That's what I was looking for, that's right.

I'm sure there are more small advantages than that to be acheived.

However, at this current time, I'm still against the process. It's rather like the entire "robot intelligence" deal. It is, of course, always possible to get too much of a good thing.

Edit: Yes, there is a such thing as too much pie, Strife, Darky.

grondring - January 30, 2005 10:04 PM (GMT)
I think it should be done if there's a good reason for it.

Míxtil_<3_fish! - February 2, 2005 05:00 PM (GMT)
i think it should only be done to save somones life.

He's not talking about saving someone's life. He's talking specifically about altering humans to be superior, physically and/or mentally.

Cloudane Firestrike - February 4, 2005 02:24 PM (GMT)
It depends on what this newfound "advancement" is used for. For example, to make yourself "better" than others just so you can prove your better than them is bad, but to better yourself for others, like makeing a fireman imune to burns say. Its not what it is, its how its used, this is about the close's I can get to an explanation.

Yeah! Lets test it out on the innocent animals! They haven't done anything wrong, but hey; we have plenty of animals! What do we care if we kill a few in our projects?

By the way, I was being sarcastic

The Entertainer - February 4, 2005 09:42 PM (GMT)
Anyone seen Spiderman? That's some cool stuff. I'd pay a lot to be stronger... like wouldn't it be cool if someone pissed you off you could like throw their house at them....

Of course that might cause some problems.

Kyrillos - February 4, 2005 09:46 PM (GMT)
I think it'd be ok, lime if you could enhance your kid before he's born.

Like me, I think it'd be cool if MY kid had cute little fox ears....

*loves Foxes*

Durendal - February 4, 2005 10:29 PM (GMT)
if a kid had cute little fox ears he'd get the stuffing beatin outta him every day.

The Entertainer - February 4, 2005 10:49 PM (GMT)
Nah... he could hear the punches coming and run.

sara13987 - February 4, 2005 11:05 PM (GMT)
This is just wrong. You're made the way you are. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and you have to deal with your's. Perfect people tick everyone off.

I don't like dogs. *I* like cats.

I don't agree with animal testing either. It seems, unhonorable. If we are doing this for ourselves we should test it on ourselves.

But that poses a risk to us. Why not experiment on something that, uh, breeds easier and faster?

I think the word you're looking for is unethical, not unhonorable . . .

Phoenix - February 5, 2005 12:24 AM (GMT)
I verrrry much dissagree with animal testing. Plus, I agree with Sara, we are who we are, and you should be happy about it.

Easier said than done, for some of the people with those extreme diseases and disabilities. Paralyzation, mute, deaf, blind . . . a combination even . . .

sara13987 - February 5, 2005 01:09 AM (GMT)
Yes, people like that wish for what they lack, but they are happier with themselves than the rest of us are.

strikeraider827 - February 5, 2005 01:20 AM (GMT)
Once the seed of war has been sewn, you can do naught but nuture it if you wish it to die.

Kyrillos - February 5, 2005 03:37 AM (GMT)
But cute fox ears are AWESOME!

Durendal - February 5, 2005 04:35 AM (GMT)
u watch to much inu-yasha.

Er... Define "fine."

Seen.

'Ivan - February 6, 2005 06:32 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't touch the subtext of that with a 10-foot pole . . .

Back on topic, people.

grondring - February 6, 2005 07:01 AM (GMT)
If I engineered humans, I'd likely do it enough so that they weren't humans anymore. I view humans as more of a starting point for genetic engineering rather than the permanent model to be improved upon.

'Ivan - February 6, 2005 07:13 AM (GMT)
Oooo, scary. And what, pray tell, would this new entity be based on? Monkeys? Penguins?
