Title: Lawsuits
Description: Are they wrong, or are you sueing?

Yeah.....Some lawsuits are right, but c'mon, people sueing over cofee being too hot. I think one of the most questionable is this one.

Apparently, there was a pastor somewhere around Kansas City that was sexually harassing female staff members. The previous bishop repeatedly recieved complaints, and had the man moved south, to around Springfield. I suppose she thought he would stay out of trouble down there.

Anyways, she kept recieving complaints, so on March 19 of last year she personally had a talk with him and warned him to knock it off. That should have ended it.

However, in the June of that year a woman started saying that this man, Norris, raped her on the night of March 25. She says he did this because she was going to resign. Now, there were a few problems with her claims. First, she kept working for him for several months more. Second, this was less than a week after the bishop had a talk with Norris. Finally, and most important, she didn't pursue criminal charges, nor did she allow the police to use a rape kit on her. Overall, it seemed very dubious.

But here's where it gets bad. This woman decided to hold the entire United Methodist church responsible for one man's actions. She claims the church should have supervised him better (ignoring the Bishop's special visit to him). So she sues the church, saying they did it on purpose. Again, she never had the man brought into criminal court, so her case can't have been that strong. However, the jury AGREES with her, and awards her $2, 000, 000 compensatory and $4, 000, 000 punitive! SIX MILLION DOLLARS that every United Methodist in Missouri must pay.

either that, or the man getting drunk in an rv, putting it on cruise control, and sueing the company for it not being auto pilot.

What's your stand on it, and what are some of the worst lawsuits you've heard of yourself?

March 25......gah putting my birthday to a bad name......
Those kinds are terrible, its just one person or group doing anything to win the money

Exactly. Of course, some people will defend others about this, give them the benefit of the doubt........but.......I'm sorry, not having your cup filled all the way up is NOT racism. Thats another one.

I heard in class last year that someone sued someone else because they broke his/her toy car (worth a dollar)

I wouldn't doubt it one bit.

And this is why some things have ridiculous warning labels. Companies are afraid of getting sued.

Well, I don't think that the woman not reporting it qualifies it as impossible, since a lot of rape victims become intimidated, and even depressed or self-hating...it's not an easy thing. It's not uncommon that a rape will go unreported. Also, I've always been under the impression that the tests for rape had to be done very shortly afterwards, and any kind of washing or extended time will make it impossible to do the tests.

But regardless of whether the pastor was guilty, it's ridiculous that the church was sued. The church isn't responsible for the actions of the pastor. It's up to the courts to decide if the rape happened, but not fair to make other people have to do the paying...

it's ridiculous that the church was sued.

That happened not too long ago around here. More like, a year or two. The verdict's been placed, and the churches around here owe about 10 million dollars to the victims. We even have to sell some of our churches, and graveyards, it's that bad.
