Title: Going back in time

Hikaru - July 4, 2005 09:27 PM (GMT)
I've had this question for a while, so I want to see other peoples opinions. Ok, if you are near the edge of a time zone say the time zone is GMT-7 then at midnight you cross to the other timezone Gmt-8 are you really going back in time or not? This may seem a little stupid but still.

No: since time is constant throughout the universe, simply moving from one spot to the next on Earth wil not move you anywhere in time. Theoretically, the only way to travel back in time is to move at the speed of light, which is impossible, since mass increases as it moves faster: it would take an infinite amount of energy to reach light speed.

Thanks

and if it were acheavable then why hasnt someone from the future said 'hello' to us?

Hikaru - July 5, 2005 06:52 AM (GMT)
Because, if you mess with the past you affect the future. I would think if someone did that, then they would know that. At least that's what I believe.

Going back in time and doing anything has an incredibly disastrous effect. For example: a man murders your parents. You go back in time and kill him. Since he's dead, your parents don't die, and you don't bother to go back in time to kill him. So then he lives on and kills your parents. This would repeat indefinetely, and could possibly pull time apart at the seams. I think this phenomenon is called a "temporal loop". It's just a theory, but I doubt anyone would want to risk testing it.

Yeah, like the Doctor Who when Rose goes back and saves her father.

marksman, that is only one theory as to how time works. Another one using dimesions, so that in your dimesion, your parents would be dead, but in the other they'd be... not dead.. lol.

Time confuses the crap outta me :'(

And just think. If you went back to... the Castle Ages, and gave them some machine guns and ammo, just think of how it would effect the future. Battles back then would have been won easier, until they ran out of ammo and some how figure out how to make ammo or the guns (I think they'd not be able to do so though). Men would have been killed. If a man dies and he was one of the people in your family tree... you would not exist, or if you do come to exist still you'd be a different person. That is just crazy. I don't think we need to mess with time.

It's just not wise overall.

Actually, people have claimed to be from the future before, and even made predictions that came true...but as far as I know, most are general enough that someone from the present could guess them happening beforehand.

I know there was some guy who apperently went back in time to get an old computer, and managed to cook up a pretty good story. I don't believe it's true, but he did a good job of countering questions about stuff and such. Don't remember where I read about it, though.

i do belive in foresight..........God can reveal things to people before it appens
even the devil can do it to some extent but not in comparison to God
