Title: video games
Description: are other ranting to you about them?

Witch Hunter - August 26, 2005 01:18 AM (GMT)
video games are good, ofcourse and you all agree otherwise i don't know why your on this site. these are a few thing i thought of or picked up over a few years that may help convince people video games are a good thing

-first of all they are part of modern day culture
-the majority of obese people are female but nearly every gamer is male, clearly games can't be having much of an effect to many people
-if a person says that sports are way better then say that in the same way they won't enjoy video games you won't enjoy sports
-for each person who suffers from blurry eyes because they play video games all day, many more sports players will suffer from broken limbs, paralysis or even death because of the rough actions of sports
-video games create an opportunity for people to put their imagination and become a part of it
-a teenager will not commonly get a job for no reason, they need a goal and video games are a great goal as they know they can afford it and it's cheaper than something like a car
-they create jobs
-it brings the world furthur into the future of technology
-it's a way to have fun with complete safty (aside from your little brother hitting you when you show no mercy, but who cares)
-some people aren't fit enough or have disabilities, video games a great for them
-they can teach you either history the world or just common knowledge
-they can give your brain a challenge
-they're one of the few enjoymen that you can have while lying down (the other one is reading. you probaly don't read often but i do)
-they create facinating topics of discusion
-and last but not least they are fun and to take them away would be like taking a piece of a persons life away from them

what the hell is this?!
.....that's what i feel like now i suppose

... Why is this making me smile?

I've personally seen the opposite.

Anyways, most of these seem to be against sports. Sports enable you to get outside, make friends, and get healthier because of exercise. -_-

aiscool - August 26, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)
now list the bad please.

Sojourn - August 26, 2005 01:48 AM (GMT)
well i agree with sara about the exercise part

and i also agree with WH about the "they are fun and to take them away would be like taking a piece of a persons life away from them" part

aiscool - August 26, 2005 02:13 AM (GMT)
its an unnesasary addiction I say they are good in modoration...but it keeps you from developing good study habits (it happend to me) and when you hit college it will all change...

and there are quite a few girls who play...it just seems that they dont talk about them as much as guys do (at least thats what ive seen)

Severian - August 26, 2005 05:19 PM (GMT)
Supposedly, there are more adult women playing video games than teenagers and kids playing them. Gaming is becoming an adult thing because kids who played them grow up.

Actually, I don't mind the idea of censoring games like Grand Theft Auto (which I do own and play, though I'm under 18). Why? Because while I doubt anyone who plays them thinks of it as a real situation they would actually do, I agree it isn't something that certain younger people should play. I think it's ultimately the fault of lazy parents and game retailers, but that doesn't mean the companies and government can't do anything.

And as far as I know, the money that Hillary Clinton spent isn't going to banning Grand Theft Auto, it's going to research affects of games on kids. Well, this is a good thing, whatever the results, because there aren't really any tests on kids to see how they react, just theories that are reasonable but not necessarily true.

Of course, video games are nearly important to me as books in terms of entertainment - a few, like Suikoden I + II and the Metal Gear series, are as important.

Ringmaster - August 26, 2005 10:11 PM (GMT)
I just want to point out that there are several incidents in which people died or went to prison because of video games but those people where addicted. So there is a point that you want to draw a line for video games.

oh, you blame video games do you? of course, it's the first thing you (or whoever else) thinks of isn't it. completely ignoring the fact that they may have been brought up terribly, were framed, had nothing to do with games at all and think that there are people who are stupid enough to do what they see in games.

i think it's all part of mass hysteria, first they thought it was witches causing bad things, then movies, then music, now the blame has been sent to video games but it'll probaly go away, then the blame will go to something else
bad things
hmm, bad parts, well don't say these to people unless you want your games taken away from you.

-they cause rivalry between siblings
-they can cause distorted vision
-siezures from flashes like lightning
-it creates a hole in you pocket from money that can be spent on other things
-it teaches kids to swear
-can give people false perceptions of the world
-unless the people near you enjoy them they may slowly come to resent you as you will enjoy different things and will have little in common
-are abbandoned once a newer and better version of the same game or console comes out (more money)
-nightmares may come of it
-MA or R or whatever you Yanks, Poms or whatever you use for ratings being seen by children
-if a game dosen't go well it can cause severe loss in money and even bankruptcy

not only can i say alot of good things but i can say alot of bad things, aren't i great!

aiscool - August 29, 2005 02:51 AM (GMT)
I just was making sure that we all would relize that video games are as good as we try to make them nor are they as bad as other people try to make them.

KuraiKitsune - August 31, 2005 11:05 PM (GMT)
It's strange, the irony of things. While video games are very important to me, and I would prefer never to give them up, I realize with a sense of irony that I had written an entire paper on the negative effects of video games... even though I'd never practice what I wrote. Hypocrisy, I tell you. ^_^

Anyways, the main point of this post was to bring to your attention that there have been many deaths associated with video games. For example: When Xenosaga's U.S. released was pushed back once again, a rather rabid fan of Xenogears took it upon himself to off himself with a gun, thus preventing him from having to wait for its release.

Then there are the countless Everquest-related deaths… let us not venture down that road, shall we?

Then there was the death in an Internet Café, where a man who played Diablo for an excess of 24 hours died of an aneurism shortly after losing consciousness from exhaustion.

However... games have also opened up employment opportunities, expanded the reaches of modern art and technology, and are also helping to spur forward the entertainment industry. Who knows? Maybe in the coming years, movies will have a decision-based ending from the viewer, rather than the script.

Actually the majority of gamers are actually Adult women.

I believe there are more men then women, right? That's what I've heard.

What I've heard much more often is that there are now more adult women playing then there are minors playing video games (in response to claims that games are for kids).

Is this just something you've heard (like my above statistic), or by any chance do you have a link to it? I'm actually kinda interested in video game history and statistics, but never really bother reading about them.

KuraiKitsune - September 1, 2005 05:17 AM (GMT)
I'm afraid I've lost the link to the sites I used for the report. :( I wrote it two years ago, and the bibliography has gone missing. I have written accounts of the accidents/murders, but have been unable to find the site again.

In short, whether you believe these stories or not is your choice.

Another accident I found rather interesting was this: A seven year old boy had imitated Super Mario, trying to jump down a 30-foot pole without any thought of injury for 30,000 points. The poor but senseless, kid sprained his ankle during the fall. He was lucky, though; death was a real threat to him.

Here's another case: When a couple of kids had tied up a 7 year old in a cave, the child bit his arm off to escape; afterwards, the caves he was in cogently resembled those in the Metroid game and sought to find the Ice Beam to freeze his nasty comrades. He supposedly dropped down a deep ditch several hundred feet deep; eerily, no one knows what happened to him after that.

Severian - September 1, 2005 04:43 PM (GMT)
I know I had read some stuff about really scary things happening during the arcade era of video games.

Less extreme were stories about kids stealing money from friends and family for games.

Really terrible stories were also there, about teens who actually (I honestly don't know whether to believe this) sold themselves into prostitution because they were addicted to gaming. I remember that book did list sources for these, but I never personally checked up on the accuracy of those sources.

I wrote a paper about video games as a movement, so I included positive and negative affects on them on people.

i'll tell you why those stories aren't real

dose a child say he's going to try and get 30,000 points to someone and they don't do anything about it? maybe he said it at the hospital, but really, who's that dumb

and how would anyone know a kid bit off his arm and looked for the ice beam if he fell into a hole and no-one knows what happened to him, eh?

KuraiKitsune - September 2, 2005 12:13 AM (GMT)
The child told his parents the reason for his jump after he was hospitalized, that's what. The reason the report got out was that, after being taken from the hospital, he was taken to a local psychiatrist. The child was not diagnosed with any serious psychological harm, but the doctor nevertheless did not hesitate to write a report concerning the odd case.

It was a simple report for the second one, and I have no proof to back it up. It is a credible site, however, and to disregard a story as serious as this... well, I'd prefer to obtain more evidence, but that simply isn't possible.

SpiralStatic - September 3, 2005 10:30 PM (GMT)
Okay, this just proves that some people really have weak minds, able to be swayed by such things. Sadly enough, that's evolution for ya.

LoZfan03 - September 6, 2005 10:24 PM (GMT)
strange, I thought evolution made things improve...

and waht does that have to do with anything anyway?

Kipdog - September 6, 2005 10:39 PM (GMT)
Its possible to play video games and sports. Honestly if its your life, you can decide how to live it. I try to mix in both, when I was alot younger I loved video games, now its kind of just a thing I do once for like an hour or two each day. Ofcourse, my skills are still as crazy as before. Video games can develop your mind too, and you give you skills, but so can sports. Really you can do both though.

Witch Hunter - September 9, 2005 04:42 AM (GMT)
yeah, but it's easier to just do one

Unie - September 9, 2005 04:52 AM (GMT)
Video games Rock.
The Army uses them ,Thats like Super cool if the Army Buys Playstations for the soliders. You wouldn't want to go to war , just sit there playing it all night and day . You wouldn't get killed in real life too. :P Only if your base was attacked.

GamerGirl90 - September 9, 2005 10:55 AM (GMT)
To be honest, I think video games are the best thing to happen to this world, much like anime. ^_^

Actually, I think that was StarCraft.

Anyway, the only negative thing that ever came from video games from me was frustration-induced banging a game boy against my skull, breaking the LCD screen.

My brother once completely destroyed his GBA screen, it was hilarious. He gets really frustated when he plays games..

As for me, I'm not used to losing, so if I start losing, I start to get a little irritated, but then I come outta nowhere with a strike back...

Video games can be so freaking erratating, i was playing SSBM and i beat 3 level 9 Marths (mind you i havent played for a while so it was hard), but i couldnt beat a 1 level 9 Fox!!!

Still better to be healthy rather than sitting down all the time.
