Title: Less colour?
flowers - January 1, 2005 06:05 AM (GMT)
Hey, I have a 5" FH and a 3.5" FH in a 500L tank, recently the smaller one died cus the larger FH went crazy and started munching on it. But ever since the smaller one died, the larger one hasn't been showing much flower colour, the spots are very lite or not even visable..
Im just not too sure why he isn't showing much colour, could he be sick or something? Or just bored cus he has nothing to chase around?
Thanks in advance...

If sickness can be ruled out..
Competition. Or you can think about it as shows of aggression. Try the mirror trick to see if he gets his colour back.

dinosor: Yeh he is still eating.
joselim: my breed is rather agreesive so im not too sure, i shall try that mirror trick tomorow and see how i go, would it change colour pretty fast?
Ive noticed if i make him chase the food and do a few laps of the tank, he will show a little more colour.
The FH is still active tho. So i sorta have the idea that hes just getting too bored.

maybe they have no fish to flare at.. so the colour are so dull..
or they feel gulity killing the fish??
a lot of werid things/incident i heard about them...
they are just like human to a lot of ppl.. they are unlike other fishes,
bro king almond here, his flowerhorn is quite smart. coz the filterpowerhead is quite dirty as he is too busy to wash, his flowerhorn do not wan to go near it. keep swimming on other side of the tank until he clean the powerhead then his flowerhorn swim around tat part of the tank..
as for mine, whenever i put in medicine and on the light , the fish will show anger.. but if i never put anything and i on the light, the flowerhorn is perfectly all right..
and for my fren case, a few years ago.. when his uncle mention that he wanna let go or sell (can't remember) , the next day the flowerhorn commit sucide..
as long as they are eating , swimming , active .. should be no problem. or u might wan to invest in a test kit and measure the ammonia , nitrate and nitrite ..

so.. what shall i do.. buy another FH so it can kill it? hehe.. no thanks.. what about putting in a yabbie or something. Currently have a yabbie with another FH in a 2.5FT tank and the FH attackes it but can't get any where with it. Maybe i could do the same with my other tank?

In this case there are but a few commonly used methods:
1.) Mirror
2.) Dither fish (Giant Gourami, Tin Foil Barb, etc)
3.) Find FH a mate
Unless you don't want to do anything about it, only these 3 options are there. There is no fourth option.
PS: FH's are really not an option as dithers for another FH, stick to the common tropical fishes, much cheaper. ;)

u should get a divider.. let the flowerhorn see but can't attack.

What sorta mate should i get it. I don't think any thing smaller in the tank would be a good idea?. A gourami is good FH friend? Or attack them too?
joselim - January 2, 2005 10:45 AM (GMT)
It will try to attack the Gourami in most cases, that's dither fish. If you're afraid your FH will kill it, you can put in a divider as what dino suggested. I have a small BP with my FH, there were some chases around the tank initially but now my FH basically doesn't really pay any attention to the BP.

what is a PB?
Also i don't really like the looks of deviders in the tank. I had deviders when i had 4 FHs in the 1 tank.

My fh seems to be fine now. I did a 50% watch change with no netrulizers or anything, just straight water into the tank. The fish loved it... So my conclusion is that the PH level was just too high in the tank. After doing 50% water change, the PH was still reading 8s. So now i just back off on the salt and the additives.. Fish has been happy since, i also bought some cray fish for it to play with...
Thanks guys for your help.. much appriciated..
