I have had my flowern horn set up going a few months now and have been amazed by the "survival of the fittest" mentallity these fish have. Usually the ph of my tank is maintained at 7.8 because the water where i live is very hard and the fish have done quite well with this setting. My Flower horns consist of one male and one female and seem to be a couple however they have never mated. Recently i was out of town and my roomate did a water change for me but thought it was a good idea to use distilled water for the water change. ooopps! My ph dropped so fast i could not believe my eyes, infact it seemed no matter how many water changes i performed it would never stabalize. Finally the lowest readings i was taking were at 6.6 and that area and i just could not believe my fish werent dying. In fact normally my FH are very pink with nice turqouise sparkles and distinct black markings however during this ph drop the couple developed this dark black strippings on their sides resembling convict cichlids with magenta fins it was actually very beautiful. However during this time my Fh became very hostile and i noticed the couple pair off and begin to gaurd one of their favorite caves! two days later i awoke to about 250 or so baby FH's swimming around my tank. Well as i watched daddy Fh suck those babies in like jolly ranchers i immediately went to the store and got one of those breeder net thingys and managed to salvage about 75 - 100 fry. I am not knowledgable in raising Fh's but i attempted to leave the babies in the net breeder but the parents would not leave them alone, the next morning the net had a whole in it and all the fry were gone?
I re-arranged my tank a bit to change up there old territory and know the male has gone very light and the female a little less so however she now constantly hides lurking behind this rock hiding from the male who seems to be constantly searching for her? and when the do spot he chase but it doesnt seem aggressive, he kisses her lips and licks her belly what do you think is going on?

i think yr tank has undergone quite some encounters, which have proved quite disturbing in your breeding process. It would help if you observe and make sure the male is not empowering or threatening the female in an over aggressive manner. With a massive ph drop, background changes, the behaviour in the temperamental flowerhorns may vary.

Do you have coral chips in your tank filtration set up? If your tap water in your region is ard 7, with the coral chips, and in after some time, yr cycled tank may reflect a ph of ard 7.3 - 7.5.

Hi! I also have the same problem. I have 2 FHs, male and female. However, I still have a few babies that I manage to save. But I dont know what to do next. How so I feed them?
