the two that you want to breed with a divider to seperate them. and flat clay pot/plate.

or you can do this.
get a 60 gallon.. give the male 40 of it and give the female the 20.. must have them divided so the male doesnt bit up your female.. also IMO the tank shouldnt have anything in it.(besides gravel).. and that should work.. (this is how i did mine)

thanks for the reply ed i have the two FH that id like to breed in a 6ft tank (about 100 gallons) they are seperated already with a clear divider so far its the same way i breedt bettas. so am i also correct in guessing that i will know when they are ready to breed/ do they pair up and stay at the divider together all te time? will the female lay eggs and then add the male to firtilise them? ive never bred egg layers only live bearers and bubble nesters

yeah they will and yeah they will stay right next to the divider as they're teasing each other.. also you have to let them loose and let the court each other.. how it happens is the female will lay one row of eggs or something like that and then the male will trail her from behind and fertilize the eggs. .. if your male knows what he's doing, everything should be fine. let me know how it goes..

here are some pictures of my old pair(dont have them anymore. male died of a POP EYE disease and i sold the female) when they were getting started and the next day the female laid eggs..
