Title: Fortifications!

Anybody here have much experience with bunkers and trenches and whatnot? Once I finish assembling my Iron Warriors I plan on working up a whole set of themed terrain - bunkers, trenches and sandbags adorned with various Chaos vehicle sprue bits to make them really flash.

There's a nice tutorial in the 40K rulebook on how to build a bunker, so building a bunker with the guidelines of that one will be fairly easy. As for the trenches, in WD 228, Paul Rudge recreated the battlefield from the opening sequence of the "Descent" level in Fire Warrior.

Yeah, I like that template in the corebook, especcially since I use a lot of foamboard in my other hobby. What I meant with experience though, was using them in battles. Using them effectively, what warriors you place where, strategic layouts and whatnot, and using them all in combination with stuff like razorwire and minefields.

Oh... then I misunderstood your question. Sorry about that  I've played the bunker assault missions a couple of times, and I would suggest using your Havocs in the bunkers with either missile launchers, heavy bolters or lascannons to fulfill different combat roles, with a squad or two of close combat maniacs for support, and your typical ordenance/tank firepower to assist them IF -for some reason- some enemy armour breaks through your defence line.

If you can keep your close combat troops behind the bunkers so they don't have to take anymore fire than they have to. Since they pretty much have to come to you to take the bunkers they should see some use. Just run out from behind the bunkers and let them have it.

put razor wire over minefields, if the enemy has to spend 2 turns to cross a field instead of one, it doubles your chances of killing a few of them. also since razor wire doesn't provide cover you can shoot them while they are being blown up, heh, it worked in WWI.
be sure to layer your defenses. minefields, and wire up front, trenches behind loaded with regular troops and your heavy weapons in the bunkers, fast attack stay out of sight behind the bunkers to counter any breakthroughs. I use my renegade guard this way all the time and if they can hold off a swarm of nids for six turns then a load of marines should be awsome. if your using hidden setup, hold all fast attack and vehicles in reserve but put their markers right up front, this will increase your odds of getting a minefield where you want it.
last thing to do is remember tank obsticals, use them to funnel armor into a kill zone so you can stop or slow down everything behind, this works really well against ork speadfreaks. but be careful not to use too many because they will provide cover for your enemy,
