Title: Heresy?

My fellow Iron Warriors i have been reading the new Space marine codex and was wondering if it would low of me to use it to represent my Grand Company see that I would be able to an actual Warsmith leading my army of dreadnoughts and thunderfire cannons. And besides what better way to defeat the minions of the false emperor than using their sacred tome against them. :curse:

This idea comes up now and than. After the tragic events the result of which was the release of the current Codex: Chaos Space Marines, some Chaos players have decided to use the Loyalist Codex to represent their forces, as it was easier to represent the now non-existing Traitor Legions (among other reasons).

Some like the ideas, some don't. I don't. And I haven't actualy met anyone who uses Codex: Space Marines to represnet his Chaos army, only ppl who talk about it.

A guy I play with actually suggested that I switch over to the Space Marine Codex. I just don't think I can see myself doing it though. I'll stick it out with what I've got. Plus I still plan to smash anyone playing the new book against me.

I've played a few friendly games with my IW's using the fourth edition SM codex. Basically had a techmarine fully kitted as the warsmith then venerable dreads, small units of heavy weapon tacticals and lots of tanks. Worked quite well fluff wise.

Not got the new book yet but looking forward to seeing what the master of the forge can do with his conversion beam! Suspect I'll write a couple of lists up for IW's using the loyalists codex.

I would not have any problem playing aganst your IW army (using SM rules). A game is a game. Even though I'm not a huge fan of our current codex, I am dedicated to making it work. I have had mixed success, but I'm doing better every game. It's nice to use Terminators again :P . Good luck with your list...

I've also had decent luck with the new dex, if anything it forces me to think outside of the box, I'm actually running noise marines for the first time in the 10 years I've been playing this game. If anything the stat's for noise marines are what I think Iron Warriors should be, a whole squad of fearless warriors able to lay down withering long range fire, while moving or holding position and still deadly in the assault. Of course I don't have mine looking like Slaanash freaks, they're just marines with bigger, badder guns, but they've proven themselves against Tau, Eldar, Orks, Guard, and loyalist marines. In short, I don't really see a problem with others using the loyalist book against them but I'll stick to finding more creative ways to use what I've got in my book first.

And would you play with me if I'd use the Tau Codex? And use Fire Warriors and Railguns to represent the IW great balistic skills?

Or Tyranid Codex to represent the elite line-breaching IW close combat force?

This is an extreme exaggeration, I know, but you get my point. A game is a game, sure, but there's a reason why there are Codexes and a player has to choose proper rules fo proper models.

enderel - October 7, 2008 09:52 AM (GMT)
Yes I would play you with those suggestions Burnart, after all it's a game. Stats and rules are purely part of the overall experience, if you feel that your view of the fluff is best represented by those rules then I'm happy to play you using those rules.

I mean I've seen superbly thought out and created deff wing ork armies using the Dark Angels codex and I think it's awesome.

With marines though I can easily see how people can mix and match army lists. The basic marine (be it DA,BA, UM or CSM) is near enough the same no matter what colour or spikyness it has.

I use assault marines as my raptors and a lot of my line troops are slight conversions from loyalists, so in my army you can hardly tell which is a full renegade of several centuries or a new recruit fresh from the cryo vats.

Hmm... maybe the necron codex to show how we can always get back up and how good we are at taking out tanks, :bionic heck, they even have a greater demon that's better than ours. :demon:

Hehe just kidding, I see both of your points. While using another codex may help make the army you want it can be taken to extremes like anything. The point is that you have fun doing it.

For me the fluff is very important so I would never use another book for my marines, but I can see why others would. It's all a matter of choice.

I never really got to play CSMs with the 4th ed codex myself so the new one isn't much of a slap in the face, even though the nerfing (or if rumors are true temporary nerfing) of legion rules kinda eats at me, so I'm not stuck with half an army I can't use effectively anymore but I have the 4th ed loyalist codex and I have been thinking of using it to make a supplemental IW list for use as an odd specialist army or more likely a specialist detachment in apoc games.

I'm basically thinking of basing it would an armoured division with vindies and whirlwinds with tech marines to command, support and repair then maybe some sane dreads. Looking at the loyalist codex more there isn't much in there I want that the CSM codex doesn't either have or have in a better/cheaper version....

well i plan on using the marine dex for my iron warriors BUT it makes sence since mi IW's os before/during the heresy so it maks sence but there are a few things that i think better repersent the Iron warriors (master of the forge for example)
