Title: Concerns with forums

Serran - August 19, 2004 09:02 AM (GMT)
can the invision forum s/w be transferred to a separate server if we were to have our own server???

now that we know what gallery software can be incorporated.. running our own forums in our own hosting servers becomes very real

greeneyes - August 20, 2004 11:36 AM (GMT)
We can buy the backups that Invision make and transfer them out. They keep backups in case of server crash. (I assume)

One thing I was going to bring up-....

Moderators should copy & paste any really interesting sets of posts onto their own computers, so if this whole place crashes we have our copies of research someone did.

I need to write up the posts on sway bars & the Kaimai Lunch Run. Now if I'd kept a copy of those....

and I must start a very visible one called "Altezzas and their faults" All newcomers and potential owners need that one!

can we get squid to get costs on how much it costs to use the forum s/w on our own server? and to remove the advertisement banners so we can use our own

Squid - August 22, 2004 06:01 AM (GMT)
The forum software itself won't cost a thing, the advantages of purchasing the
software are mainly tech support options.
The 'trial' version you download is a fully functional version, there are no
advertisements on the trial board.

What you get if you buy the board software

The cost is just the hosting cost of having a server with MYSQL and X amount of
space for uploaded files/pictures/avatars etc etc..

IPB also do forum hosting -: IPB Hosting Info
But this doesn't give us the flexibility of running our own website along side.

My suggestion:
Find a web host that offers MYSQL, and as much storage space as possible.
and whack InvisionBoard, Garage, and Gallery on there.
This will give you pretty much what you used to have on LOC, and the only
cost will be the monthly cost for server hosting.

greeneyes - August 22, 2004 07:43 AM (GMT)
I assume we can buy that straight off Invision & stay "here".

So we have our own software/control & gallery space, hosted on Invision which we use our club subscriptions to pay for.

Serran - August 22, 2004 08:08 AM (GMT)
yes but we dont want that (au members anyway)

we wanna have something like www.altezzaclub.org.au/forums and maybe something similar with nz like www.altezzaclub.org.nz/forums

greeneyes - August 22, 2004 08:42 AM (GMT)
You can set it up the same Serran.

You buy altezzaclub.org.au, & put a webpage up on any 'free' space. (ours is up on Orcon because they are my ISP & offer a free 10meg page to anyone)

You point your domainname to that page and then link to the forums like we do.

Do you have other setups in mind? I'm quite happy to put the forums up anywhere so long as we are buying the space commercially & not relying on a favour. I haven't checked out prices yet, I thought I'd worry about it in November when I get back from Africa.

what you setup right now is different to what we want..

we want a homogeneous domain naming setup with everything to do with our club..

when members view the forums they will be under altezzaclub.org.au/forums/etcetc not s2.invisionfree.com/lexusaltezzaclub/etcetc

or maybe forums.altezzaclub.org.au etc

greeneyes - August 22, 2004 09:43 AM (GMT)
Ah, OK! That's what we get when we buy space somewhere. (I assume!)

We buy space with an IP address and we assign it a name like altezzaclub.org.nz/forums/

That replaces //S4invisionfree/lexusaltezzaclub/

I'm not sure if we can have both altezzaclub.org.nz & altezzaclub.org.au attached to the same IP address, but that's the general idea.

Voice (Chad) is one of the guys who can advise here. Who is involved in this sort of work in Aussie?

Serran - August 22, 2004 09:49 AM (GMT)
in regards to the hosting specifics.. thats matt..

This is from Squid's link above-

QUOTE

http://www.ipbhost.com/

Full Forum Hosting [more info]
Our full package offerings fit the vast majority of our customers looking for a stable forum solution with easy setup and management. The prices start at just $20.00 a month to get you going fast and economically. Our full package features a license copy of the software and complete technical support offerings.

So it costs us $US20/month, or 12 member's subscriptions/year.

The cheaper package is this one, in four levels-

http://www.forumflash.com/?packages

QUOTE

Monthly Price $0.00 $5.00 $10.00 $15.00
Setup Fee $0.00 $10.00 $0.00 $0.00
Bandwidth 1GB 2GB 8GB 15GB
File Space 10MB 25MB 75MB 200MB
Database Space No Limit No Limit No Limit No Limit.

$US10/month sounds better! So we burn one subscription every two months. I'm not sure how small they compress photos in a gallery, but once we have 75meg of photos we would be up for the $US15/month to get 200meg.

That would keep us going for a while!

Squid - August 22, 2004 10:31 AM (GMT)
Just remember, that is a forum only.. not a 'website' as such.

greeneyes - August 22, 2004 10:43 AM (GMT)
Which is Squid? Both of those Invision options?

How is it different to what we have now? Do we still run the altezzaclub.org.nz on Orcon and have the forums hosted here, just paying for more space and greater customisation?

Squid - August 22, 2004 09:03 PM (GMT)
Which is Squid? I is Squid. :)

Difference to what we have now is, we would be in full control of the forum,
no advertisements, and easy customisation (gallery, garage, etc...)

Depending on pricing, space, and MYSQL support, then yes, I'd put it onto Orcon.
Makes it much easier to 'mod' the board, and you can have your
altezzaclub.org.nz/forum url piece of cake.

greeneyes - August 23, 2004 11:30 AM (GMT)
U sure you not Crusty the Clown??!!

I'll hunt down Orcon prices later on.

Squid - August 23, 2004 08:44 PM (GMT)
Yeah... not enough hair to be Krusty..

OK guys, need to resurrect this topic, and need to act on it SOON!

We need to address the following issues:

1/Where are we going to host the forums?
2/How are the two clubs going to share the cost?

I have two quotes so far, and these both come to a ballpark of A$500/year. This seems to be the cost we are looking at to obtain adequate space and speed.

The quotes i have gotten are from www.creatop.com.au, a web host my business currently deals with for hosting customer websites, and www.syphonhost.com, recommended to me by Sengdog. Syphon Hosts quote is the best i have received so far.
I have one more quote to obtain before we are in a postion to choose, however if you guys have any suggestions or recommendations, let's hear em!

Keith will be back on Tuesday, we are going to have a meet between our admins. I believe we can give you guys an answer sometime a week from now.

Matt =)

greeneyes - April 11, 2005 09:32 AM (GMT)
I'm in a cafe in BNE and just saw this-

I can't remember what prices we looked at in NZ, probably similar. Cheap servers I think are in the USA.

$250AU, say $NZ275, say 10 paid-up members subs per year. I think we have had two pay in the last 4months...

We will go over it this week.

Thunderbird2 - April 12, 2006 11:21 AM (GMT)
Just an update on this, i have a new host i'm using for my small IT business and for the Altezza Club website. He's based in Melbourne, and his pricing and service is awesome. Moving of these forums onto our own hosted site is definitely more of a viable option now. Not something to rush into, but something to consider and work towards. Once it is done, we can run our own advertising regime with sponsors to help fund the site.
