Title: OMFG!!! Why is my front wheel black!!!

frylai - August 5, 2004 07:21 PM (GMT)
Hi All,

There are 2 types of OEM brake pads available from Toyota for our cars. They have different compounds and one type makes alot of non-needed brake dust and it makes your front wheel look black! So get this part number down and make sure to get Toyota not to give you this number pads and go for the other, from what I have heard they have a few dollars in difference in price.

DO NOT GET 04465-30320 if you don't want black dusted out wheels!

Matt =)

Hi Frylai:
Finally I figured out the new website. I was depressed for a week because I was lost, couldn't find the new site

are your new pads making MORE dust than the factory pads?
my standard pads (mainly front) make lots of dust, and same for almost all IS200/300 I see in BNE.

Do u know the part number for the pad which doesnt make as much dust?

Also do u still have "Lexus" caliper stickers in white?
I was reading UK LOC site, they have it for $15 ( Us dollar I assume)
Do u think that's good buy?

many thanks
SSML

Welcome back SSML, I forgot your e-mail otherwise I have sent most e-mail to Au members to let them know regarding the shut off.

I m making the Lexus Caliper stickers this week and I m sure the price they have on LOC is 15 Pounds which is not a good deal, I'll keep you updated...

Hey,

I used to get a bit of brake dust on my wheels. Painted my caliper's black and there seems to be no brake dust at all compared to what it used to be like.

My calipers were painted black already when I got my car, so I cant comment on that, but I definately know the dust is bad sometimes after I drive around, and not others. So maybe the amount of dust indicates a good week/bad week for me!! :D

I had my rear brake pads changed two weeks ago, with the help of Greeneyes! They were TRD brake pads that were taken out and replaced, so my car has really been TRD-ed to the max!

Hint: Make sure the salesguy knows what kind of brake pad to sell you the first time round!!!!

Although the guy did give me discount on the new brake pads, it wasn't thru trying the "I'm a girl, so give me a discount for taking an interest in my car" From memory, the rear pads cost around $86 [before discount] for the set.

4ROLLN - August 8, 2004 08:56 AM (GMT)
fortunately, mine must have been changed in japan, I have never noticed any bad brake dust! the standard wheel design doesnt help though!

voiceinsideyou - August 10, 2004 05:11 AM (GMT)
Yeah, it's horrible on my car - I'm sure the brake dust goes all over the actual body of the car too, as it's much dirtier just behind the front and rear wheels.

My pads don't need replacing, but I'm almost contemplating doing it early to fix the problem - costing me hundreds in cleaning products! :P

Altezza Girl - August 10, 2004 05:17 AM (GMT)
Chad, I think [on the yellow at least] it is going to bad whether they are new pads or old pads, cos even with my new rear pads in, the brake dust exactly the same as it was before! So dont change them especially, save your money until you actually need new pads, and just keep on buying those cleaning products :)

Since they were going to cost me as much as the OEM Lexus pads, I went for EBC Greenstuff. Virtually dust free. :D

r u sure ur EBC Greens are that dust free? i found them kinda dusty compared to OEMs...

i tried Project miu before and they are the ultimate nightmare!!! i alwayz joked about changing silver wheels to grey and then back to silver again without needing a respray job... all u need is 2 days of hard city driving for a 'colour change'

Brian_J - September 28, 2004 01:51 AM (GMT)
really twincams?
ive heard nothing but good reviews (except for yours) on the greenstuffs

Yes, definately LESS dust than OEM. OEM used to dust the wheels in a couple of days. Not the case with EBCs....no noticeable dust even after a week :)

now am confused... my personal experience wif the greenstuff was that they were dustier, but the way they scrub off speed compared to the OEMs is amazing, and it's like, the harder u drive, the harder they bite! awesome!

anyway, would really luv to use them again if cash permits :D

voiceinsideyou - December 2, 2004 11:31 AM (GMT)
Excuse the stupid question - but where can one get the EBC Greenstuff pads? And expect to pay how much?

i had my front pads changed at IS.. wasnt too impressed with the performance and after a good hours drive my front wheels are black.. my rear pads are low now and i'm looking around for options.. but theyre arent many as i cant find any other car that uses the same rear pads... theyres a brand called Mintex that do both, they got thumbs up from lots of guys from LOC UK.. but i cant find them anywhere... anyone seen this available locally?

greeneyes - December 14, 2004 05:08 AM (GMT)
"Locally" is Sydney for Kagemusha...

Serran will know I'm sure.

Black Tez - December 29, 2004 07:39 AM (GMT)
I put Greenstuff V4 front and rear and my experience is same as Twincams... brake performance immensely better than stock pads (and handled a track day at Pukekohe without fading once) but dusty, OMG!!! 300 kays of quiet driving around town and the front wheels are as black as the tyres

Muzza - December 29, 2004 07:08 PM (GMT)
You guys thinkl that is dirty ? Don't go anywhere near Mintx pads then. I love them for stopping but i've given up worrying about how dirty my wheels are.

Pugsly - December 29, 2004 10:49 PM (GMT)
man i've had people asking how come the front wheels are black... as in they think thats the normal colour...

hahaha well at least they go black evenly

TTE IS200 - January 23, 2005 12:27 AM (GMT)
Hey All..

Why not get your rims coated black like mine :D

altezza05 - February 17, 2005 12:53 AM (GMT)
I thought the black break thing is normal for all cars???? I drive a Integra Type R at the moment and it has the same black dst as well, however, I'm picking up my IS200 in the coming week, so yeah, just looking in and out of this place to see what ppl have done to their lexus.

SSML - February 17, 2005 06:15 AM (GMT)
I think it all depend on the brake pad compound.
I noticed most of the euro cars all have dustly front wheels. where as not many JP cars have that problem.

our ES300 has very very clean front brake, so as locally made camry/avalon.
u just dont notice the front wheel get dark like IS200.

however, after recent pad change (Lucas pads). there is a noticable brake dust build up. but sitll not as bad as my IS200.

ozaristov300 - February 28, 2005 03:03 PM (GMT)
Brake effect and brake dust are usually proportional. Better pads stop better but create more dust.

Everything you ever wanted to know about rotor and pad combinations can be found at http://www.mrtrally.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36. You'll be needing a large pot of coffee and plenty of spare time. For those with EBC Greenstuff pads, be ready for bad news.

There is a spray on silicon sealer available in speed shops which reduces dust build-up on wheels and makes it easier to remove. You need to reapply after each wash though.

I'm soon to install DBA 4000 series front rotors and Race Brakes RB74 pads all round with Goodridge s/s braided brake lines and Motul 5.1 brake fluid. I'll let you know how it goes.

xnickx - May 14, 2006 11:43 PM (GMT)
How much are TRD pads in NZ? Also what about GreenStuff pads and where can I get some from guys :P

rnb200 - December 28, 2006 07:44 AM (GMT)
I was told that cheaper pads are softer, create more dust but dont wear out the discs, and that expensive pads are harder, not so dusty but wear out the discs.

Thunderbird2 - December 29, 2006 02:14 AM (GMT)
Don't believe everything you are told. But also, understand that there is no real rule of thumb. I have Delphi Sport pads in my car and these dust up less than the OEM pads while providing better braking performance both cold and much better when hot. But you lean on the brakes enough and you can still dust up the front wheels as much as you might with the OEM pads.
