Title: 17" Wheels Question
Description: Includes Tyre Chart

Hi guys,
There are some wheels for sale, and I'm quite keen on them. However, I know very little about sizes, offsets and the like. I have searched on is300.net but its not much use as everyone is riding on 18"s and 19"s...

The wheels are front 17"x8" +29 offset
The rears are 17"x9" +38 offset

Will they fit? I know the stud pattern is correct, just don't know if they will rub the guards or hit the suspension or the brakes. The guy won't let me try them on first :- (

Thanks guys :) !

Forget it if he won't let you try them first!!

Why would you buy a car without a test drive? It's no good buying something that you can't fit to the car.

Tell him you'd LOVE to buy them, but only if they fit!

But I think Mr Singh is right, something that wide won't have anywhere to go, inside or out.

Jase,

It won't even come close to fitting. The offset it totally wrong for rims that wide! Try looking for a +48 offset, which is quite a bit more than a lot of rims out there. Even at that, I'm sure at 9" on the rear you'll get a lot of scrubbing on the guards. I do on my car with 8.5"/245/40/18 on the back.

Lawrence.

Go chat to Kiddo Jase, he's just around the corner from you. Measure his offset and see where it rubs on his rear guard.

I'm sure he'll let you try one on your car!

Thanks guys :- )

Kiddo has 18s doesn't he? Or does it not matter when it comes to offset and width? Like, if a set of 17s and 18s have the same width and offset, they should fit the same? Because I have always thought that, with tyres on, 18s are slightly larger in radius than 17s.

By the way, the tyres that come with the rims are 245/40/17 all round

You're right, tyres are about the same diameter all the time.

Usually 18s are slightly bigger than 17s, but some profiles are smaller. Rim offset is probably more important in rubbing.

A 265/40R17 is larger than a 265/35R18, from the tyre diameter chart here-

I've asked T'bird to remote host some of the tyre size chart above

He will post the link to it below.

The original chart is enormous so I just cut out the sizes we are most likely to use.

The left hand numbers are OD in mm, and the tyres arranged in aspect ratio. (the /35 or /45 or /50 sizes)

Thanks to orbweb for their help.

:)

Thanks guys I think I'll give up those 17s and go for some 18s instead.
These ones I'm lookin at are,

Front 18" x 8" ET45
Rear 18" x 9" ET35

After playing with the wheel offset calculator in Mr Singh's post, I think these should fit in the front, but the rear seem like some mods will be required.. What do you guys reckon?

What about tyres? Would 255 all round fit? Or should I get 225 front and 255 rear? Or any other combinations?

Thanks again guys :- D

Oh never mind... 18"x9 35offset is not gona fit :-- \ Will need like 45 or 50 to get the rears to fit

The left-hand column of numbers lists the outer tyre diameter in mm.

not too sure about that wheel calculator.

even with a rays recommended offset of 7.5 +40mm front and 8.5 +40mm rear
(which gives a perfect street setup), and the calc. is still off.

you can go +10mm offset on rays recommended guides to fit big brake kits, and use 7.5 +30mm all round and its good.

Ended up getting some Volks 17x7.5 and 17x8.5 offset 40, perfect fit.
The tyres fitted are 215/45R17 and 235/45R17. However they are very worn, and I'm wanting to fit my stock tyres on them (215/45R17).

Will my stock tyres fit the rear wheels? Looks like i'll be stretching them quite a bit, but is it do-able?

Thanks guys, let me know what you think :)

I think the 215 will still fit onto ur 17x8.5 rear rims.
the lip of ur rims will appears to be sticking out.

I think lots of VIP style saloons/vans have super wide deepdish rear rims, with less width tyres on. that's just my observation from lots of JP VIP car magazine.
