figure I make this a new thread ...
Ok Guys -
heres the link to the Fog to Brake light conversion.
goes fairly into detail.
http://www.altezzaclub.org.au/fog_mods.htmPlease note that design of the web page is still in construction - so until the new format is underway - you will have to view it as is... still good !!
enjoy ...
also anyone accomplishing this mod or even making slight adjustment for easier install - pls let me know.

Hi:
Very useful IS200. I followed the instruction and done the mod! v cool. The only thing I would suggest is to make a note which wire is for Left and Right (I used masking tape to stick on cables to mark). So in case if one of the fog is not working, u know which cable to look for possible bad connection.
I guess for JDM Altezza and USA IS300 owners, there is no need for this mod as the rear inner lights (rear fog for euro,AUS IS200/IS300) also lit up when lights are turned on and become brighter under brake. (I noticed that from Best Motoring video and GT3 game)
please correct me if I am wrong.

I added a switch so I can disable the mod and return it to default easily

rear fog light is factory/dealer fitted option on altezza in japan part of winter pack but there wont be a inner boot mounted parking light or brake light if the altezza does come with a rear fog light option.
Brian_J - October 5, 2004 09:44 AM (GMT)
umm just wondering, is this mod "legal" on the roads and stuff in australia(nsw)?
Stephen - October 5, 2004 10:50 AM (GMT)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that the fogs are only permitted to be on in conditions of poor visibility.

correct.in poor visibility/fog condition.
rear fog lights are compulsory in europe just wonder why aus/ nz does not require them as standard by law even though some nz/aus spec cars got them as standard.....
SSML - October 6, 2004 11:32 AM (GMT)
From my understanding and obsevations from videos and magazines, US and JP models will have inner lights(IS200/300 rear fogs) on at the same time as the outter lights (IS200/300 brake lights).
So all 4 round lights will be on when parking lights is switched on, then all 4 round lights will become brighter when brake is applied. so all 4 lights must have 2 filament bulbs. please correct me any JDM Altezza owner if I am wrong.
In AU, Europe, the inner lights are purely act as "Fog lights" (Same for GS300 too)
and Yes, It's illegal ( in QLD at least) as u are only allow to have 3 brake lights switched on at once.
That's why the dealers have to disconnect the original 3rd brake light if u fit an optional boot spoiler with brake light on.
But u still see Grey imported Skylines with 4 round lights+ 3rd brake lights on during brake.

My JDM Altezza has a switch on the dash (factory fitted) to switch it on and off, but they are not lighted when the headights are on. :D

Brian_J - October 9, 2004 01:42 AM (GMT)
does anyone wanna bring along the tools needed to.."help" me with this conversion on sunday? :P
Stephen - October 9, 2004 05:48 AM (GMT)
You will also need the diodes.
Brian_J - October 9, 2004 08:51 AM (GMT)
will you be able to do them for me stephen? if so i will rush out tongiht and try to get some diodes
Stephen - October 9, 2004 09:36 AM (GMT)
To do it properly, you will need to solder the connections.
?uestlove - December 9, 2004 02:01 PM (GMT)
I cant figure it out! I had a day off today, so Had a look at it, the Diodes can only go one way, tunred the other way round, it doesnt work.
Im talking about the same problem i was having, with the lights switched on, as soon as I brake, the fogs stay on :(
Stephen - December 10, 2004 10:51 AM (GMT)
Check the rating of the diodes.
?uestlove - December 10, 2004 01:27 PM (GMT)
ahhh, good point, how do i do that, they have a 54 number on them, could that be it?
Stephen - December 11, 2004 06:25 AM (GMT)
It should also be marked with a current rating in amps. You require at least 1.5 amps.
lextcy - December 11, 2004 09:02 AM (GMT)
hmm, more troubles with your car huh
;)
i can have a look for you at the next meetup
?uestlove - December 18, 2004 05:42 AM (GMT)
I think thats best, did you ground anything? My ol man rekons that may be it.
lextcy - December 18, 2004 10:37 PM (GMT)
nah no grounding
it should work perfectly
?uestlove - December 25, 2004 12:40 AM (GMT)
I fixed it! Well, my Dad (An Electrician by trade did hehe) I was connecting the swith to it aswell. Now I can use the fog light switch for something else, like maybe a hi/lo boost setup :D

What was the problem?
?uestlove - December 30, 2004 12:23 AM (GMT)
I was connecting the swtich to the brake, so everytime I brake, the fog light switch would turn on, and stay on.

Hmm, going back to this - this definitely isn't the case in my RS200Z. Although I guess it's possible mine was modded in Japan the situation with mine is:
Park/dipped headlights - 2 outer lights on
braking - inner lights turn on, outer lights go brighter
No fogs option installed factory....
Stephen - January 23, 2005 10:41 PM (GMT)
Mods, the link to the brake light mod does not work.
Alee79 - January 25, 2005 04:16 AM (GMT)
hey stephen,do you have any pic that can show me exactly where can i find those cable? thanks :)
Stephen - January 25, 2005 12:22 PM (GMT)
Alee79, I do not have photos as I have not peformed the mod. However, others in the Club may have photos. Lextcy, Brian_J, ?uestlove....would you have images of the connections?
If there is a demand, I will do a re-write of the mod including photos for future members.

I was watching a BMI video with some Altezza's racing and I have to say it does look good when they come on as brake lights. However, the bad news is the link in the first post seems to give me a 404. Anybody got a working link?
lextcy - March 8, 2005 11:07 PM (GMT)
i'll make a write up with pics soon

Just performed this procedure on the car, took me about an hour and a bit (I'm pretty new at this electronics thing). Lights work great, they only turn on when you press the brake pedal. The instructions were spot on (grabbed a copy from Mz-IS200 who printed out the first post link when it was working).
Net result is an install that can hardly be noticed except for two wires coming down the boot hinge (and even then it can be easily hidden, but I'm lazy :D).
For those who are itching to perform it, the brief summary is as follows:
(You can simply splice the wires, crimp them in, or if you want the most secure connection, solder them in)
* Remove left inner boot cover (4 small plastic clips and two 10mm bolts hold this in)
* Remove outer boot floor (just lifts up, not necessary but makes it easier)
* Remove plastic cover on left boot hinge (3 press-in clips)
* Find plug that goes to left brake light
* Intercept green + white wire and crimp in your own wire
* Place a min 1.5A diode (I used 6A, about $1.50 from electronics shops) in this wire pointing away from the light, call this wire A
* Carefully cut open the plastic covering the wiring bundle going up the left boot hinge
* Find the two green wires with brown stripe and silver spots
* Cut them both and place min 1.5A diodes on the side that comes from the boot
* Split wire A into two parts
* On the other end of the diode, join one split end of wire A, as well as the other side of the green/brown/silver wire that goes to the fog light
* Do the same to the other green/brown/silver wire
* Tape it all up, tuck it back in
* Enjoy :D
Will post up pics to assist later tonight, and before/after pics.
SenDog - March 9, 2005 08:30 AM (GMT)
These pictures may be of assistance:
http://www.eftel.com/~shaun/Wiring%20One.JPG(This shows the junction that the factory brake light wire comes from. I unplugged this and peeled back the plastic to reveal the green/white wire which is the power for the brake light. This will act as the trigger for the fog lights.)
http://www.eftel.com/~shaun/Wiring%20Two.JPG(This shows the above wire, after it has been split into two (one for each foglight) and traced around the side of the boot, up the boot hinge, and into the plastic covering which has had a slit cut to access the green/brown/silver wires which power the foglights. If you look carefully you will see one of two diodes. Remember to point your brake light diode away from the brake light wire, and place your fog light diode BEFORE your wire from the brake light, and pointing towards the fog lights.)
http://www.eftel.com/~shaun/Wiring%203.JPG(This shows the wiring after it has been tucked back into the plastic covering. Not the neatest of install I agree. However, once the square plastic covering has been placed on top, it can't be seen.)
And here's the finished product:

Hope this helps!

Well done, i wanted to do this mod ages ago, what sort of wires should i use? will speaker cable can handle the power?
?uestlove - March 9, 2005 08:52 AM (GMT)
speaker cable is more than enough
Alee79 - March 9, 2005 09:17 AM (GMT)
this might sound stupid, but whats diode looks like.
Will dicksmith or tandy sell them?
