Title: Excessive Tyre Wear
Description: Error Setting In Default Setup
Nakamichi - January 23, 2006 01:25 AM (GMT)
It seems to be a common excessive tyre wear for all Lexus IS models in the UK due to the error in the default 'dynamic' geometry. Does it happen to those in Australia or those latest IS200 ? Does any place in Sydney aware of the problem and have a proper geometry to setup for it ? Please read
HEREThis comes up very often, so there is this post and another here-

Head to spinning wheel tyres in woolloomolloo. They do a full geometry alighnmen for altezzaclub members at $60 which is around $20 off regulat price.
Stu is in charge of alignemnets (its all he does) and really know his stuff. Take your car there and they will sort any possible geometry issues you may have!
There may be a member or two (tb2?0 that might be willing to head with you there for an alignment. However booking is essential.
See you at next cruise! :woot:

I have this same problem(ish)
But I am running -2deg camber all round, because thats the LEAST they could get on the rear ... with +1.5 toe, maybe a tad less with 0 toe.
I need to get the camber on the front taken down to maybe -1.5.
Has anyone else experienced problems with getting desired camber settings on the rear? I really don't want to have to buy adjustable upper arms for the rear...

I believe default geometry from the factory includes positive camber. Certainly, excessive tire wear in these cars is common if alignment is not done properly. As Charlie has mentioned, Stu at Wolloomooloo is probably the best guy to see. He has done a few of our cars now, so he is getting to know what works best. His expertise with the Mazda MX5 is such that he has an amazing reputation with the MX5 club, and if you take a stock MX5 to him, when he is finished with it, not only will it handle better, but the tires last longer as well. I have driven an MX5 adjusted by him, and the difference from standard was DRAMATIC. Since our cars allow for similar adjustments to the MX5, it will not take long for him to become a wizard with our cars as well.
Be sure to ask for Stu and mention the club. I should point out that once we organise a proper sponsorship deal with Spinning Wheel, the discount will only applied to paid up members.
Have moved this thread to the appropriate section of the forums (wheels and tires)

Goldberg, make sure the camber adjusters are working properly. If they have abused in the past by wheel-alignment monkeys they may have the adjusting washers stripped.
Failing that, you might have to have some eccentric bushes made in nylon or similar to give you even more +ve camber. I assume the car is very low.
There is a bit on this in the threads.

Contacted
Tony at
wheels-inmotion.co.uk in UK about the Geometry for IS200. The Geometry that he creates is always unique and personally specific base on the following factors :
| QUOTE |
Your personal loading include the number of people in your car The average fuel in the fuel tank from empty to full Driving habit & condition from Motorway to city roads What's your needs, tyre wear conservation & handling And any current factual problem of your car, etc. |
Thanks Tony for these informations :)
@black200, did Spinning Wheel Tyres in Woolloomolloo ask you similar questions when you did your alignment in Woolloomolloo ?
The unique personal geometry not only to reduce tyre wear but also result in much better handling and driving comfort :woot:
Spinning Wheel will take all these factors and more into acount if you wish. They will basically cater your suspension tune according to wether you want aggressive handling and response at the expense of tire wear, minimum tire wear/maximum comfort, or a combination of. Of course, each geometry they do is unique.

Very common topic on LOC UK.
Tony also does a free "fine tune" where a has the car back after a couple of thousand miles and checks the set-up again. He measures the tyre wear and adjusts the geo to suit your driving and suggests changes to the tyre pressures that you run.
I'm lucky that Tony is only a 30 minute drive from me. He has "adopted" my Tezza as a test bed, we lowered it on the coilovers at his place so that he could measure the effect of different "drops" on the geo, especially camber. I was running about 2.5 degrees neg on the rears for a while, handing was great but the tyre wear was pants. Eventually lifted the car back up to recover the geo and reduced camber to about 1.5 neg with the adjusters maxed out.
Front tyre wear on the inner or outer tread is the most common problem though.

A silly question but is the uneven inside/outside tyre wear part of the lexus warranty that can be claimed for ?
Is wheel alignment part of the 10,000km/6 months service ?

I have adjustable upper arms for camber on the front, which i found out about a week ago! so camber on the front is not a problem, its just the rear ...
But like MacRS mentioned, I might try raising the car a little to get more positive camber on the rear

As I remember on the UK LOC forums, people could claim the tyre wear and got at least one new set of tyres. I've been banned since we started Altezzaclub, so I don't know what the latest is...
Sometimes the dealers would do a wheel alignment if hassled about it, but they just made sure everything was within factory spec and the problem continued.
I recently had the same with my Nissan Wingroad. The tyre shop set it up within factory spec, & the tyres showed tremendous toein wear within a week or two. All they did was check that it was within spec.
The specs were 4deg toe-in to 1deg 12min toe-out! So anything in that range was declared OK!!
I got a length of string, a vernier caliper and a spirit level and did all four wheels at home.
Been great for the last few months!
I think the AS200s need to be closer to the toe-in maximum of the specs. They probably toe-out under braking or cornering.
It is just not a problem on RS200s really.

R u talking about the very first 10,000KM service? or every 10,000KM schedule service?
Lexus AUS provide free service for the first 10,000KM, but I m not sure whether that includes wheel slignment or not
for my schedule serive, I asked them NOT to perform wheel balance and alignment, not that I dont trust them but b/c it's expensive.
e.g. for wheel balance, u will be charged individually for parts (the weights they used) AND labour ( time they spent for doing wheel balancing)
so it's much cheaper to get wheel balance and alignment done in a suspension/tyre shop of ur choice.
speaking from my own experience...

Just checked on LOC UK and you are still listed as a member! Don't think you have been banned :D
 You're sortof right! I've been banned the IS200 forums, so I can only see the big Lexxi!! ...and I've certainly been banned from the NZ/Aussie LOC!!!!

Yes, every 10,000KM schedule service, will they do the wheel alignment for every schedule service including the first one ? So the very first 10,000KM service it's free including wheel alignment or anything else if I ask them to do/check ? ie changing the wheels back to front or left to right etc ..... :P

I cant really remember whehter 4 wheel alignment/ wheel balance/rotation are included in the first 10,000KM free service.
but I guess if u just got ur car not long ago and still new, when u bring ur car in for the free 10,000KM service, just mentioned that u had some vibration on steering wheel when driving on HWY (so they will do wheel balance) + u noticed the excessive wear just , (so ask them to do wheel alignment) if they can do all of them for free. :D
